Why had I never heard of this movie when it is clearly the greatest thing about 1973?
Walter Matthau, Bruce Dern, Lou Gossett, gritty-ass cops with fucking awesome dialogue (especiall Dern, possibly Dern's greatest moment!) and MAD 70s cultural clusterfuckery.

It's got everything I love about 70s filmmaking in it.

Oh wow, there's a whole series of Martin Beck novels. Set in Stockholm! (the movie's set in San Francisco)

caught like 10 intermittent minutes of this this afternoon during olympics commercials

dern's mustache is impressive
dern's dialogue was muted multiple times as he called black men 'boy' and perhaps worse
louis gossett was displeased but did not kick his ass
i am now older than walter matthau was when he filmed this
