Hi, I'm off to Brighton on the 21st to play a gig. Anyone able to make it down?

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 7 May 2005 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yes! definitely! I think to try to make it back to Oxford that evening would be sheer mentalism however. Know any of cheapo places to stay in Brighton?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 7 May 2005 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll try to make it - seeing as I live just around the corner! Jeff Mills is playing the night before in Brighton if anyone is interested.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Saturday, 7 May 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Spookily, this weekend is the one-year anniversary of our last Brighton FAP. Also the day QPR got promoted. Ahh, great days.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 7 May 2005 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Archel to thread!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 7 May 2005 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Just realised Johnney B still has the Autofire CD I lent him about 10 months ago!!!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 7 May 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't that the day of the Oxford Bikeride? Which I have realised that I can't make because I have a gig the day afterwards and have to be in reasonable shape for. Sigh.

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Saturday, 7 May 2005 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Mills eh? Where, and how much? I'd love to go to that!

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 7 May 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"san francisco, tell me about it, how far? jeff mills?"

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 7 May 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Greg, when are your finals done mate?

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 7 May 2005 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Last one's on the 26th!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 7 May 2005 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I got my detroit mixed up, it's actually Carl Craig playing the night before.

It is at The Ocean Rooms which is just around the corner from The Freebutt:

http://www.oceanrooms.co.uk/ocean%20JEL.html

It would probably be about £7/8 I'd imagine - possibly less if you get down early.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I don't see why we can't go see Carl Craig - I'll let you know if I'm there chewie.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh, can I come?

Yes, I KNOW I have that CD off you Mark, I must remeber to give it back to you, after re-listening again.

(For those unaware of Autofire, they're awfully good. When I listened to this CD of markHs, I described it thus: Imagine if Aphex Twin was gonna make an album, but then all his stuff got nicked, and all he had left was a commodore 64. Then imagine that this was a good thing. Autofire is what you'd be left with.)

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Woo! I am probably around for this but since it's festival time here I don't really know whether I'm coming, going, or watching crap experimental street theatre...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay!!!

(Thanks for the review Johnney btw :-) )

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You know - I'm sure my mate Robbie used to manage the Ocean Rooms.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll see if ILMers Nick B or Andy "Foop Foop" are interested too.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool. Yay, excited!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Autofire looks good - can we expect an army of teenage robots?

And also up for mr craig. Despite the Ocean Rooms being pish. Can't they get him down to play a decent venue? My front room for example.

(andy foopfoop.)

Andy (foopfoop), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are so many things happening on my birthday?

Alix with an i? (alix), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll speak to Mark and see if I can't tail him to Brighton.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

When is Dav eB the Green Party hater moving to Brighton?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I might definitely come to this - thnaks for the heads-up Matt! Err, unless I'm at the Harold Budd thing: old Harry's last EVER concert, appearing with (speedy google, hasty paste) The Balanescu Quartet, Bill Nelson (Bebop Deluxe), John Foxx (Ultravox), Jah Wobble (PIL), Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins). Could be good, but still, might be nice to meet a fews of you instead. Hmm, decisions decisions...

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously this is a classic struggle between the PAST and the FUTURE. What to do?

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The venues are only a few minutes apart - timeshare!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

over lunch today, Johnney B told me he was convinced it was possible to go see Autofire AND get back to Oxford the same night. I went "hmmmm" and on consulting online train timetables back in the office found that my "hmmmm" was perfectly justified. It just isn't. If anyone knows of a cheapo place to stay in Brighton, could you email me pls? thx.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanna go to this!

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you should!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark -note that these definitely ain't very glam but- the first places that spring to mind for really cheap accommodation are Brighton Backpackers, which is a backpackers hostel (£13 a night), dorm-type acc; loadsommodation, normally full of partying Aussies and Canadians; there's another hostel on the same street (Middle Street, just off the seafront between the two piers) whose name I can't think of but is the same sort of thing but on a smaller scale and I think it's a bit saner; the Grapevine, a cheap B&B (£22 per night), I've had breakfast there a few times and the food's okay and it seems to have quite a nice atmosphere; it's also quite central in the North Laines; Brighton YHA (£16 per night), dunno anyone that's ever stayed there but I guess you know exactly what to expect; it's right on the north edge of Brighton though, maybe 3-4 miles from the centre... uh, there's a whole slew of twee B&B's but I don't know shit about those... maybe Chew or Archel can think of alternatives...

Have to say though that I would happily volunteer my sofa, but I'm still not sure if I'm going be there at all or what plans my wife has that weekend. Sorry to be lame!

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

acc;loadsommodation

I have no idea what happened here!

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't know a great deal about B&B. The Lion & Lobster pub apparently have nice rooms for £25, and there is the Travel Lodge which is a 15 minute walk from the venue.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The Lion and Lobster's a great pub, but I was just trying to think of the last time I went there and I swear it was to get blind drunk watching Ireland beat Italy 1-0 in the football, which makes it what, err, 1994??? That long ago? Bugger me, I'm really old!

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I live round the corner from the Lion and Lobster. When I moved in, i thought i'd check out my new local, but as soon as I walked in the door, some guy comes up to me and licks my neck. I went back a few months later, and they were doing late night drinking (well, til 12), but you had to have an obligitory baked potato and beans with your beer. They did a little side salad and everything.
Is that a recommendation?

foopfoop (foopfoop), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

They do a good pint of 'Timothy Taylor', but apart from that I'm not a great fan of the place really. Apparently they "hover" over you whilst you eat a Sunday Lunch and boot you out as soon as you finish. But, still, cheap rooms.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I now have an image of them hovering over you as you sleep, waiting to boot you out as soon as you wake. But damn, free neck-licking? They don't have that at the Grand, you know.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like the Wicker Man or a Miike Takashi film or something!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Disturbingly so! Room on the Autofire tour bus, perchance???

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

There's room on the train if that's what you're asking.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I just left a message on my cousin's voicemail. I'm hoping he'll come along to the gig. I haven't seen him for ages though and I could well understand if he's thinking to himself "why the hell's Mark ringing me?"

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 12 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I have decided to go to Brighton by coach, which means changing coaches at Gatwick, but hey. It also means I shall be leaving Brighton at 1.15am or thereabouts. I did get in touch with my cousin who shall be coming to the gig with me.

I shall be arriving around threeish if anyone Fancies a Pint in the afternoon.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be going up to Brighton on Friday and may well be out Friday evening.

Anyone wanting to meet up then please mail me for my mobile number.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Still not sure if I'll make this or not, but just wanted to say that if you're looking for somewhere to go drinking afterwards till your bus turns up Mark, you'll be able to use your ticket to get into the Spiegeltent club, which can be a lot of fun, though I haven't been in yet this year. Otherwise, there's clubs aplenty.

Who else is going anyway?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister is going who is at Sussex uni.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I will - depends how I feel after Cral Craig the night before though, I'm not as young as I used to be!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wow! A Spiegeltent. They're so cool. A theatre company in Oxford (Creation) regularly put on Shakespeare in one.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I had a great night although I was pretty ratted by the end - it was good to see everyone and I hope everyone's okay. We ended up going to Linden's pad for a bit and then finding a squat party at about 7am.

The only browner about the weekend was losing my ticket home at Victoria station and getting fined £20 but all in all I had a wicked time so thanks everyone who came down.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 23 May 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad you enjoyed yourself, a good night definitely. Nice gig feller! Was on the way to getting pretty cockeyed myself, good thing Matt dragged me away when he did. What happened to Mark? He just sort of vanished at some stage... Mark, nice to meet you, hope you got home alright in the end!

NickB (NickB), Monday, 23 May 2005 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Had a foine time. We'll have to do it again for your next Brighton gig. Are the pics going up at some point?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 23 May 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry I didn't make it! Was having friends to dinner instead in the end, but it sounds like a good night. Next time!

Archel logged in elsewhere, Monday, 23 May 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

There will be a next time. I'll have to scan the photos as soon as Kelly gets them developed.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Great gig! I look forward to the photos. It was good to meet Chewshabadoo and NickB too. Nick, I thought I did say that was going, just after the Freebutt shut. I met up with my cousin again and went back to his house and listened to records for a bit.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Hey hey. Did you ever hear from that bloke about playing another gig down here?

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm... not yet. He said it won't be for a month or two though.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Let me now spam the Autofire MySpace page where you can actually download both of our albums plus the new one too!

Please add us! Ta!

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 23 June 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

MIMEsweeper which they have on this pooter says "p0rn detected" for yr myspace page. So I can't - at least not from here. Soz. Or at my other work for that matter, where they block myspace completely!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 24 June 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

..actually I was able to add you after all by going to my own myspace page, Charlie, I just can't look up yours!

You Rhythms of the Worlding this year? I'm planning to go, as is my Mum.
