I just got yelled @ real good.
This lady called me for airport directions. Rather than looking at a map like an intelligent person would have done, I drew on my memory and told her to take such-and-such a highway West. Trouble is, she should have taken said highway East. When she called back angry and confused saying that "the girl at the desk said she had directions for me," I assumed she had called the wrong Doubletree and transferred her over.
Come to find out that "directions behind the desk for me" referred to the maps to the airport we keep behind the desk, not specific directions printed out for her by a female auditor at another hotel. I am apparently "a coward" for transferring her to another hotel when I was "too scared to deal with the problem."
She has now missed her flight, and craziness is purportedly certain to ensue in her work and social life. "Legal issues in limbo," as she put it. She WILL be contacting my boss etc etc and I highly doubt my job is in jeopardy as a result of this, but nonetheless I'm a bit shaken up and pissed at myself for not pulling out a fucking map/ruining some poor nice lady's day.

OK hahaha she wants me to "write an email telling me what you did and why it was wrong and CC it to your manager." wtf
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

Have a yoghurt. Take a break.
― gnarly sceptre, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

― darraghmac, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I'm off today and am going to a party this evening. Fully intend to laugh it off with a beer or two.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:22 (seventeen years ago)
But thank you for the sympathies, guys. I think I will go have a yogurt.
try to get decent directions to the fridge man.
― darraghmac, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)
lol
― Brigadier Pudding, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)
Recommend her a book on GTD:
To do list:
- ensure have adequate directions from google maps etc before setting off (don't rely on telephone call)
- set off with adequate time to get to airport, allowing for contingencies
― Bob Six, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)
I would write an apology for the confusion and CC your boss, best you tell them 1st before she does.
― Jarlrmai, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)
HOOS: Seriously though, who doesn't googlemap something before leaving? Anyway, it's an honest mistake, and it'll blow over. People like to scream and shout and threaten, but once the perceived affront is over, they don't follow up on the threats.
Today at my mofoing job: My boss: See this door? Me: Yes. Boss: Every day at 3:30, please guard this door until 3:45 to make sure nobody goes in or out.
I'm a social worker. Lock the goddamn door.
Then, Boss: Can you find an alternate placement for X? Me: OK, I found an alternate placement for X. Boss: WHY DID YOU DO THAT????
I'm so out of there as soon as I find something else.
― miryam, Friday, 1 February 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)
pls tell her to go f*ck herself hard
― whatever, Friday, 1 February 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)
she might already be doing that, if she needs that door guarded for 15mins
― Rubyredd, Friday, 1 February 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)
i am sick and tired of these motherfucking managers at this motherfucking job
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)
"PookieHoos, let's burn this motherfucker down!"
― milo z, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)
I've been here for more than two years and this place has spruced up on the outside while it's deteriorated on the inside. We now have a gorgeous new lobby/restaurant/bar, but our rooms are still in disgusting disrepair and are not worth the $200/night we're charging people.
A/Cs are noisy or don't work, there's mold in the walls that they just PAINT over because real removal would require shutting the place down and opening up the walls, there are leaks from the ceilings. These things take forever to get fixed/don't get fixed because the maintenance manager keeps running off his techs: he's a control freak who wants his contractors working here and he's going to make everyone else's job a living hell until that happens. He's been doing this for a year now.
The CEO has made a decision that if anyone provides their two weeks notice they are to be dismissed on the spot. What the FUCK. It's the most unprofessional vindictive behavior I've ever seen out of a company. This is a terrible place to work and I want the hell out of this job.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)
The CEO has made a decision that if anyone provides their two weeks notice they are to be dismissed on the spot.
what is the thinking behind this???
― velko, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)
oh man, hoos! have you looked into other options? btw you should call osha or dhec on their asses.
― tehresa, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
I have no idea! They haven't bothered justifying it to us, they're just doing it.
xp
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)
That's my dilemma though: another hotel job that's stable but boring or going entry-level at some copywriting firm that might fire me in three months.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
I wonder if the CEO ran this by his legal department, since it would seem to me that in giving notice, you are not giving the company 'cause for dismissal', and therefore you or other employees so dismissed could start to draw unemployment for up to six months - which would cost the company plenty of money.
Consult a lawyer familiar with employment law to see if this theory holds water. If it does, then jump ship and stick it to the man.
― Aimless, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)
it's definitely not illegal. lots of law firms do this. i don't really get why a hotel would have reason to do this, though. they probably say dismissed as in 'you don't have to come in' but they still consider it a resignation.
― tehresa, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:51 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I don't imagine it is illegal, especially in Texas which is a "right-to-work" state ie "you have the right to work for any reason and we have the right to fire you for any reason"
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)
note: i once quit a job with a lot of um... flair... and when i came in for work the next day, they told me they were gonna pay me the two weeks and just not to come in anymore. but they wouldn't give it to me in writing so i was really freaked they were trying to stick it to me one last time. i got the pay, though. so perhaps they just don't want these disgruntled employees on the premises.
― tehresa, Saturday, 16 August 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)
The frustrating thing is that the person that they first decided to enforce this policy on isn't disgruntled at all: she dislikes this place just as much as I do, but she's leaving because her dad is sick and she's gonna go take care of him in CO.
Coolest girl that I've worked with in ages, real shame to see her go and I'm pissed that she's getting shitcanned this way.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 16 August 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)
xpost
I'm not saying it would be illegal to dismiss a person who gave notice, but rather that drawing unemployment compensation depends upon whether you quit, were dismissed 'for cause' (meaning that you didn't do your job satisfactorily and were fired), or if the employer just decided to dismiss you for reasons having nothing to do with job performance. If it was the last of these, then you qualify to draw unemplyment checks, but not if it was either of the first two.
By firing you for giving notice (provided the employer's policy was to require two weeks notice) they would qualify you for unemployment.
There is also something called at-will employment. If, when you are hired you are told there is no need for giving notice, that your job is "at will", it means that you can walk away in the middle of your shift if you like, and they will have no recourse but to pay you for the hours you worked and not squawk about it.
If Hoos's job doesn't require notice, he shouldn't give them any. He should just tell the manager at the end of his last day that he's gone, and explain why he chose to do it that way. Let them deal with the shit the CEO has handed them.
― Aimless, Saturday, 16 August 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)
Aimless OTM. Texas is right-to-work, but you can still draw unemployment if fired without cause.

Paper trail of two weeks notice is key, I think.
― milo z, Saturday, 16 August 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)
All this theorizing assumes that the manager will enforce this assinine policy against Hoos, so he'd be taking a chance in that way.
― Aimless, Saturday, 16 August 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah. Given that I've been told this is in place, any plans I'd had to give two weeks notice are now pretty much out the window. Wait til right after payday, let em know I'm leaving, see what they say.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 16 August 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)
keep it positive Hoos
― darraghmac, Saturday, 16 August 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)
Third car breakin in as many weeks. And now we're losing business because he's telling all our walkins that they need to KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CARS CAUSE THESE ASSHOLES SURE AINT

Can't stand mine any more - gave notice I'd like to be transferred to a stress-free, non-consultant position as I apply to law school (another thread of its own). I'll be manning phones and hopefully studying while on hold, but assuming the school thing works out, I'd start 1.75 years from now, so I'd need a job in the meanwhile since It'd be weird to keep my phone job for more than half a year, let alone almost two. So job search AND school apps - nice.
But I can't do this job any more. It's sucking the life out of me.
