Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Absolutely. It's got 'thug' written all over it. Look at that chain!

Nick, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mack was attacked by another dog yesterday - an expensive, pure-bred Bull Mastiff. His ear has several puncture wounds on it. But because Mack is a pit bull and the Bull Mastiff is an expensive yuppie dog, a gang of witch-hunters are threatening to take him away from my sister. This dog is a sweetheart, and he had been playing nicely in the park until this yuppie monster dog came along and tried to bite his ear off. I'm extremely pissed right now at these puritanical witch-hunting yuppies.

Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The chain is the most humane collar for large dogs. Leather collars cause choking and internal bruising. That's why you see chain collars on big dogs. Also, he's strong and can break leather.

Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Devil Dogz!!!

Out of interest, why do you own a pit bull, as opposed to any other kind of doggie.

Pete, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well it depends what it has done, or is trained to do. I've read some pretty horrifying accounts of dog attacks - and actually witnessed my own fiercly loyal dog (a Rhodesian Ridgeback) attack a childhood friend. Completely unprovoked he knocked her off her bike and bit her arm pretty badly - but it easily could have been much worse. My father told me that he 'went to live on a farm' but I'm pretty sure they put him down. Have never wanted that confirmed for sure, so have never asked in all the years since.

Kim, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't my sister does, but my whole family considers him family. My sister volunteers at a no-kill shelter for dogs that were abused or abandoned. Mack was found in a boxcar and sent up to the shelter, where my sister met and fell in love with him. I thought she was nuts, until I met him. There is a great deal of ignorance about this breed - a long time ago, it was the German Shepherd, then it was the Doberman, then the Rottweiler.

This dog is in a documentary about Pit Bulls and abuse of these dogs. He also worked with the police department as an ambassador for the breed.

Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wrote that before I read your last post Kerry. It totally depends on the individual dog - the breed really doesn't mean all that much. The one I mentioned had a sibling, and she was the most gentle and meek dog I've ever known. A lot of breed prejudices that people have are not very accurate.

Kim, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That is a beautiful dog, don't have it put down, no way. One of the worst moments in my life was seeing my old dog just after she had her final injection, breathing her last I couldn't stop hugging her, and had to be led away by my Mum, I was 24. Strangely disconcerting fact is that I cried more then than when my Dad died.

chris, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would say hide him from this group of bastards if you have to. But don't let animal control take him away!

Nicole, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with Nick on this one. That ain't no innocent lab you got there.

Nude Spock, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No I certainly wouldn't have him put down. If Kerry speaks the truth I'd be more inclined to put down the Bull Mastiff.

There was a lot of paranoia following the UK's ill-conceived and badly-defined Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991, which led to Staffordshire Bull Terriers who just happened to *look like* Pit Bulls being seized because they barked and defend their territory, etc. One of the worst examples of unthinking kneejerk Conservative legislation.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And you ought to know, right Spock? What a genius.

Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

By the way, the Labrador is about to become the scapedog of the decade, because (it is claimed) they are being "over-bred" (read: too common).

The receptionist at the animal hospital told us that cocker spaniels are the worst for dog bites and attacking children.

Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Labs rule, Kerry. I suggest you get one and join the crowd.

Nude Spock, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Labs (actually, in Britain only Countryside Alliance / National Trust members call them that, so Nude Spock Euphoria sounds to me like a 56- year-old woman who went to Roedean: sorry) are nice dogs but just too predictable for me. I prefer the irascibility and wilfulness of my own mongrel (with a lot of Staffie in her, supposedly).

Cocker spaniels can be very aggressive - in the UK, this was for the same reason that Kerry gives for Labradors in the US: they were overbred when they were the most popular dog in the 50s and 60s.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Absolutely not! The dog has done nothing wrong! I hope everything turns out okay! What a terrible situation!

james, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, they picked the wrong dog to single out, because he's a bit of a celeb and everyone who comes in contact with him loves him. Plus, people at the police dept. know who he is. So hopefully it will work out.

Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

certainly. Cats R being much better!

I R fatnick, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In a similar vein, didn't a paediatrician get fiercely attacked in England last year when the tabloids were outing paedophiles, because some moron misread the plaque on their surgery door?

Nancy Drew, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm afraid you're right, Nancy.

Fatnick = fule.

(and I have two cats myself!)

Robin Carmody, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Kerry, I love animals and pets no end but pitbulls are timebombs. :( They were bred by man and they are sick. From what I know about them is their brains grow too large for their heads and the pressure drives them mad and and they they will attack even the best of owners, & children. :( It would humaine to put them down before, a tragic event than after. I'm sorry Kerry.

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's okay, Gale. Your post makes me feel better, strangely.

Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aww, what a cuddly looking dog. I hope nothing bad happens to him.
And Robin is right, FatNick is a fule. Not about dogs Vs cats, in general.

DG, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, don't worry - I'm not offended by any posts on this thread. It's okay to joke about hating dogs around me - big diff. between that and acting like these people did IRL. Besides, I'm actually more of a cat person myself.

Kerry, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fight the bastards tooth and nail. Anyone who thinks a dog's breed determines it's behavior knows zilch about raising and training 'em.

Seriously, if the dog has only bitten another dog, that is hardly reason for exterminating it. And how are they going to determine which dog "started it?" I suppose if either handler were neglecting to control their dog, then blame could be determined. Maybe you should settle it in Animal Court with Judge Wapner.

bnw, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the very best dog on earth is a Newfoundland dog. They are well known to save lives, and they are great swimmers. I have never had one though. I did however have a black lab years ago and he was brilliant.! I had my buddy too. He was a purebred white boxer. :)He died this past year.:( ( He was almost 14. He was just fanastic but was taken for a pitbull on many occasions. I got him for my 40th B-day. He looked like a little pig! He had no hair at all!

Gale Deslongchamps, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a white boxer round 'ere, actually.

Always on the verge of pulling his owner over, as they do.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three months pass...
I just want to thank all the sweet things that some of you have said about Mack. To those of you who have nasty things to say about him...well...Mack's too gentle and sweet to rip you apart, but his ferocious brothers are on there way over to your houses, and they're hungry!!

Mack's owner, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

say hi to kerry, mack's owner

mark s, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That dog is cute.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry - I just had to comment on the fact that I've been making really stupid typos all day, such as in my last post. I meant to thank the *people* who said nice things about Mack. I usually don't thank "things".....By the way, the witch hunt seems to be winding down a bit, and he's actually found himself quite a few admirers in our building. We're still ducking behind the bushes every time we see the dog park people. They're the only people that he ever growls at. What a smart dog!

Kelly (Mack's owner), Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*sees picture* Aw, beastie. :-) Dogs make me happy. Cats are very cool too, I should note.

Wow, Nabisco is just posting Wondermark strips to every thread he can find, huh?

The Yellow Kid, Friday, 28 September 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Gale, "MYTH: Pit Bulls brains swell/never stop growing.

This rumor started with the Doberman, and has since been said about game-bred dogs in general. The concept of an animal's brain swelling or growing too large and somehow causing the animal to "go crazy" is not based in truth in any way.

Their brains grow at the same rate as any other dog, and the only time that a Pit Bull's brain is going to swell is if it receives a serious injury. If an animal's brain were to grow too big for its head, the animal would die."
