Now if they'd just release Square Pegs and Sifl & Ollie on DVD my life would be that much more pleasant.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Sifl and Olly is the jewel in the crown there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

What? Whose the other Pete?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

... And suddenly Ian Riese-Moraine is a naked man saying, 'Volvo! Volvo!' (Easte, Monday, 16 May 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Clarissa Explains It All is also out. I hope they release Rocko's Modern Life soon.

... And suddenly Ian Riese-Moraine is a naked man saying, 'Volvo! Volvo!' (Easte, Monday, 16 May 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I would almost be afraid to watch Pete & Pete again, I'm afraid it wouldn't be as good as I remember it being.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I know.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got this in the post. Neatly packaged, got loads of my favourite episodes, and there are commentaries with the guys who wrote the show on three episodes.
I'm actually really looking forward to watching it.

Greig (treefell), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got one en route.

Bite my nosehairs, lounge-act!

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

first show i ever saw at maxwells [polvo, circa 1994], big pete was there.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have considered Michelle Trachtenberg's sexuality, so I can't go back and watch this show.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Pete went to my HS and was the grade ahead of me. I've run into him a few times since and he's a nice guy.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

We was only funnin'
But guiltily I thought you had it coming.

I have never seen this show. I would like to.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Booya! I'm excited about this dvd set, but I'm mostly just hoping it does well enough so that the later seasons that are closer to my heart are released too.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I was worried about Pete & Pete holding up to my memories too, but The N was showing them a couple years ago, and I watched them all again and it was mostly just as good as I'd remembered. I also noticed one episode with Liza "Paris from Gilmore Girls" Weil as a guest, which made me really happy.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I would almost be afraid to watch Pete & Pete again, I'm afraid it wouldn't be as good as I remember it being.

I had these same feelings, and trust me. It totally, totally stands up.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

how many magnetic fields songs are on the soundtrack?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

holy shit this rules!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I found that my attention span has actually become too short for this show; it's too slow-paced for me. I have a shorter attention span than when I was 12, wtf!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

> how many magnetic fields songs are on the soundtrack?

wasn't it Polaris? i was listening to their cd full of things they'd written for Pete&Pete just the other day. (these uses to show on Nickelodeon here in england so i've seen a dozen or so of them. the golf balls i remember...)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't the theme song "Hey Sandy" by Polaris?

Pete and Pete was great back in the day I fear going back to it at 27.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched a couple of episodes last night. It was still pretty great.
A lot of the music on the show was by Polaris (including the theme song), but there's music by The Magnetic Fields and other bands that crops up.
On the DVD they've got a few of the Polaris songs from the soundtrack so that you can listen to them in full. I own and really enjoy the Polaris CD.

Greig (treefell), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete and Pete was great back in the day I fear going back to it at 27.
My mother's 35 and she was just excited about it as I was. It's still great. I've got the Polaris CD on mp3...soooo many goodies on there -- I wonder how it compares with the rest of Mark Mulcahy's catalogue. They had the greatest guest appearances ever, too -- from Kate Pierson and Michael Stipe in the episode where Mr. Tastee disappears to Iggy Pop's recurring role as Nona F. Mecklenburg's father to Luscious Jackson in Dance Fever (with Gabrielle Glaser flirting with Big Pete, lucky bastard!).

I have considered Michelle Trachtenberg's sexuality, so I can't go back and watch this show.
Wasn't she naked in Road Trip?

Hey smiling strange
You're looking happily deranged
Can you settle to shoot me?
Or have you hitten your target yet?

I'm mostly just hoping it does well enough so that the later seasons that are closer to my heart are released too.

I saw a commercial for the Pete & Pete dvd, and it made sure to mention that "season 2 is coming soon!" so there will at least be a season 2 dvd.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ENDLESS MIKE

h0t h0t h0rsey (Carey), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, I was already post-college when I enjoyed this show first time around so I guess I don't really fear having outgrown it yet.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"What, you guys didn't know that?"
-Teddy

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I can say with confidence that "Hey Sandy" as the theme of P&P is the first song that ever touched me.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

In my swimsuit area.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, roxy! "Excellente," as Teddy would say. I'm intrigued.

I really love the relationship between Ellen and big Pete. I think they handled that so well, there's really not enough of that kind of complex relationship between a teenage boy and girl that rarely gets seen in tv aimed at kids and young teens.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i still love the polaris soundtrack to this show! "hey sandy!" "waiting for october!" "saturnine!" and "summerbaby (i was around)" (NOBODY KNOWS NOBODY KNOWS)!!

phil's right, there were a bunch of stephin merritt songs used in some of the episodes - "why i cry," "your long white fingers," "lovers from the moon," "falling out of love (with you)," among others. all used really well, too, i might add, and not in that OC-ish "look the writers really like THE COOL INDIE MUSIC AND YOU SHOULD TOO SO I WILL PLAY A SPOON SONG HERE DO YOU SEE?!?!" approach.

they shot much of the last season of this show in my hometown. the school dance episode from the last season takes place in my elementary school's gymnasium and the parts where little pete is sliding down the hallway is the first floor of my high school. i only ever saw them filming the "love bites" episode, but i had some friends who were extras in a few of the episodes. we taped most of these episodes though so when my friends and get nostalgic we pull the tape out and see who we can identify!

sorry, when i get started on this show it's hard to stop. i'm gonna buy this set ASAP.

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

er, "love bites" = "crisis in the lovezone"

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

also, this show had such a BIZARRE resume of guest stars - ann magnuson, michael stipe, ll cool j, adam west, syd straw, kate pierson, iggy pop, steve buscemi...

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

How did I forget that Iggy Pop was Michelle T's dad?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny Unitas.

... And suddenly Ian Riese-Moraine is a naked man saying, 'Volvo! Volvo!' (Easte, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i think the episode where the mr.softie ice cream man goes away and doesnt come back, pete & pete are dreaming of softserve and the music playing is "the flowers she said, and the flowers she said she sent". i think

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There are so many great episodes of this show. I wonder if the DVD includes the shorts they did before the show (or was it during the show's run?).

Finally, a thread I can brag about having a Petunia rub on tattoo. (It came in one of the videos)

rocknrolldetox (rocknrolldetox), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Those shorts I think were tacked on at the end of Clarissa episodes ... I have them on tape. (Someday, I will convert old tapes to digital ... ) All of them look much younger in the shorts, so I'm pretty sure they were done before the show was created.

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, those shorts were the basis for the series.

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I watched the Season 1 episodes fairly recently. The show's even more glorious than I remembered, and many parts made me laugh much harder than I have before (probably because I'm older now and can pick up more of the subtleties and references). I love how in the "Don't Tread on Pete" episode the Trader Tim character (who starts off trading something measly and always ends up with something valuable or unusual) is introduced and seemingly disappears for the rest of the episode unless you look closely in the background in two particular shots he goes from having a pastry to a shopping bag to hauling around a fucking three-tier wedding cake(!) at the end of the episode! What the fuck? Where do you get a three-tier wedding cake from in a school cafeteria? The notion's entirely inexplicable and therefore, while being seemingly silly, is utterly profound and fucking brilliant, especially when you begin to entertain yourself with the ways he might have scored it.

I WANT/NEED THIS DVD

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

not many things that i loved in the 90s have held up very well over the years at all (that's right, saved by the bell, i mean YOU), but i'm totally confident that this has and that i'll maybe even appreciate its beautiful weirdness even more now.

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if this show subliminally transmitted a weaponised hallucinogen as I watched because my memories of it ain't that nice.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

I have fond memories, but not to the point where I want to see them again.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

I love the way this show portrays a child's worldview: weird and normal behavior synthesized, small things made epic, big things made mundane.

Season 3 never came out on DVD but I found megauploads to all of the eps if anybody wants to see them.
