This is a breaking story, go to any Canadian news outlet for more.

She is the foxy daughter of an auto parts magnate who had previously run for leadership of the Conservative Party. She is ffffffffoooooooxxxxxxxxxyyyyy. (not really, only in comparison to Stephen Harper)

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

BEST BID FOR CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADERSHIP EVER!

Hmm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I wonder how many Conservative MPs will follow her lead. I know there were two Nfld MPs who were considering not voting against the budget.
I don't expect any more to actually cross the floor, but Harper is screwed! Oh joy!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Is it more in impact than voting patterns? It's an almost even split in Parliament, isn't it? Please to tell me more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah.
Okay, rough guide to what's happening in Canadian Politics.

Last June, the Liberals were elected to a minority government. Since then, a massive investigation has revealed the previous Liberal gov'ts were awash in patronage and corruption w/r/t to their Sponsorship Program. Kickbacks, favours, monogrammed golf balls, etc.
The Conservatives have aligned with the separatist Bloc Quebecois and the Libs have struck a deal with the NDP. As such the seat/vote count was still slightly against the Liberals.
For the last month or so, the Conservatives have been trying to push towards defeating the minority gov't, and even put forward a motion in Parliament about a week ago calling for the Gov't to dissemble and call a new election. The motion passed, but legally speaking, it wasn't binding as it was merely a recommendation.
On Thursday, Parliament is scheduled to vote on the Budget. If the Budget should be defeated, it would be seen as a binding vote of non-confidence and the gov't would fold and we'd be headed to the polls again.
I don't think the Stronach acquisition gives the Liberals enough votes to assuredly withstand the rest of the Conservatives and the Bloc. There are, however, a few independents.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

well this is bananas

jones (actual), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I didn't see this thread so I just revived the old Canadian politics thread. But really, this story deserves its own thread. I'm totally speechless. (unlike Parliament will be in the next couple of days har har)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't think the Stronach acquisition gives the Liberals enough votes to assuredly withstand the rest of the Conservatives and the Bloc. There are, however, a few independents.

I think they could have withstood it by one vote even without Stronach and with all the independents (assuming everybody shows up to parliament on the day of the vote). But yeah, the two-vote swing is huge in this particular case.

Not to mention that she's IN THE CABINET. HOW CUSHY AND CONVENIENT.
How long has this been in the works? Will we ever know?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Huk, you needed a few more "MEANWHILE"s or something to make that summary as good as your comix summaries.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Well, when Peter MacKay reaches out from the Phantom Zone to stop the wedding, you'll get your MEANWHILEs.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I did not see this coming at all!
All I knew is that she was for the gay marriage.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

According to CBC, Stronach puts the Lib/NDPs at 151, with the Tory/Bloc at 152.
Three indies: Carolyn Parrish (she'll vote Lib)

Aw fuck here's what CBC says:
Her defection from the Conservatives gives the Liberal-NDP coalition on the budget a total of 151 votes, not including Speaker Peter Milliken, a Liberal MP who votes only in the case of a tie.

The Conservatives and Bloc have a total of 152 votes.

There are three Independent MPs, one of whom, Carolyn Parrish, has said she will vote with the Liberals. The other two, Chuck Cadman and David Kilgour, have not said which way they will vote.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure one of the two indies is a total nutjob.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I think Kilgour will go Lib.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

haha that cbc article is the most unsubtle "dear john" letter ever

jones (actual), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Harper blames MP's defection on 'ambition'
well, he would know!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

HA ha!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

She really isn't foxy at all.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Pressed on how her decision will affect her romantic relationship with Central Nova MP Peter MacKay, the deputy leader of the Conservatives, Stronach called that a "personal matter" that she did not intend to comment upon.

She also said she had the "greatest respect" for MacKay.

Ain't nothing hotter than dancin' with the dark side.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

The Canadian dollar reversed direction, moving 0.18 higher to 78.94 cents US after high-profile Tory MP Belinda Stronach defected to the Liberals.

"Obviously, that slightly improves the odds of the Liberals surviving the vote on the budget on Thursday ... we have seen the Canadian dollar do marginally better,'' said George Davis, vice president and chief technical analyst RBC Capital Markets.

"I mention marginally given the fact the U.S. dollar remains strong and commodity prices continue to weaken a bit so there are some offsetting factors there.''

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

I was talking to a Conservative MP (and critic) today, and he's fairly confident there won't be anymore defections before Thursday. Of course, he described Stronach's defection as "unexpected" and "smacking of opportunism."

BanjoMania (Brilhante), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget Kilgour was once PC too. Crossed the floor over I forget Free Trade or GST. He just left the liberals over this sponsorship scandal and in comes Belinda.

You know the sponsorship scandal didn't bug me, this does though.

Wow, this weekend's going to be a barrel of monkeys.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh I know. I'm pretty sure his politics are still closer to the libs tho. And he crossed the floor over.. well both really. It was because of the GST but we have the GSt thanks to stupid free trade.

So what exactly bugs you?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

He's just upset that now Peter MacKay will be the prettiest girl at the Tory BBQ.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

hurray! the end is no longer nigh!

Sym Sym (sym), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

canadian politics is basically just a competition between Martin and Harper for the title of unluckiest man in the world.

anyways, off to vote! wish me luck!

Sym Sym (sym), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Dear Stephen Harper,

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH!

Love,
All the Canadians who are sick of you acting like a power-hungry brat even though they don't really like the Liberals much either

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

It's about time you found this thread!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

ahha haah aa haa syou suck so much, Mr. Stephen harper

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

If I was Harper, I would still go for it. Just cuz I'm curious, and also, if I was Harper, I'd be a total douchebag, void of branes.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

I hate Stephen Harper more than any other Canadian politician ever. More than even Lucien Bouchard, Jacques Parizeau and Brian fucking Mulroney.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

So is Harper basically faced? As in he gets a challenge for leadership for screwing this one up or something similar?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

He's like, um, I want to make some allusion to the pre-Uncle Buck work of John Hughes, but I can't think of anything.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

John Hughes did Uncle Buck? Wow, you learn something new everyday, might as well go home then.

So what exactly bugs you?

She ran for leadership of the conservatives recently an she's pretty much an old PC type, did she make the switch just to get in cabinet? It pushes my buttons that Martin really should be leading a PC party, and the last thing they need is more people like her and less like Shelia.

I suppose I should be happy that it screws over Harper but I want to see Harper and Martin AND Layton AND the seperatists all screwed over.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

... and anarchy ruled across the land ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

The whole deal for Belinda, I suspect, is that this is her chance to really stick it to Harper, and then she can return to the Conservative Party and say, "Look, I'm a fucking leader. I put aside petty partisanship and did what was right for the country. I gave up sex with Peter MacKay so that Harper wouldn't lead the Tories into an election that could have shut us out of Ontario for another decade. Clearly, I am the one who can take the Canadian conservative movement into the mainstream and actually form a real, functioning government instead of a collection of cranks who think the Donna Reed Show was a documentary."

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

There's no way she'd have an easy time returning the conservatives. I think it'd be career suicide if she tried to cross the floor again.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Well, what does she care, she's RICH.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Also, who's to say that she gave up sex with Peter MacKay? What's hotter than political traitor makeup sex? Have you ever *had* political traitor makeup sex?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Leave Elsie out of this!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Here's the way it went down: she was going to vote with the Liberals in order to keep the current government in power (better a Liberal government in collusion with the NDP than a Conservative government in collusion with the Bloc), and she felt that since this wasn't going to be a free vote that it was best that she crossed the floor (there was a chance she'd be kicked out of caucus so this way she gets belong to a party, join the government in power, and get a raise, though it's not like she needs the money). She was smart in that she saw an opportunity to take a cabinet position to sweeten the deal for herself. I don't think she'll cross the floor back to the Conservatives either as the Martin Liberals are probably right wing enough for her and as Harper said, there's 0 chance that she'd get the leadership now. The rank and file Conservatives showed their true colours last night calling her a whore and a dipstick, so I don't know why she'd want to go back anyway. I wish that the CBC hadn’t shown those interviews with westerners on this as it made me want to move really badly.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

the only way i can see huk's prediction playing out is if the conservative alliance re-fractures (not impossible at this rate) and stronach sees an opening there

jones (actual), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Harper is leading the Tories towards being more Westernally Isolated than Preston Manning's Reform was (once it had a few seats).

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I've been wondering what the odds are of a Conservative party split. When the parties merged it seemed to me that they felt victory was assured by doing this. And now Canadians have proved them wrong, even when circumstances couldn't have been more perfect, and they've got to be wondering who the hell they've gotten in bed with to achieve pretty much nothing.

And I saw Peter MacKay getting interviewed on the cbc today. Poor guy.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Don't feel bad for Peter MacKay, he deserves worse.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

But he looked so sad!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

It's not that he's sad, it's that he's actually Balok:

My favorite moment of the teary-eyed Harper press conference: "Just a few days ago, I was telling my wife how I don't trust that fucking bitch!"

Sym Sym (sym), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Now I may be a little slow on current politics, (possibly due to my lack of TV, and newspapers). But about a month ago Macleans put Belinda on the cover and did a four page article on how beautiful, fashionable, influential and rich she was. Not since the likes of Trudeau has a politician been given such a stunning review and media acceptance. I think her ego may have been filled to capacity on that one. And perhaps catapluted her desions to defect.

Just my thoughts.

I've never watched this much cpac (10 minutes worth) in my entire life!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

it happened an hour ago, and none of the canadian news channels are covering it in any depth, aside from blips. does nobody at the CBC realize that we might want extended reactions on Newsworld *right now*, and not at 9pm on the fricking National?

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

With all the build-up you'd think we'd be having parades & fireworks and so on!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Ha!
I finally watched more than five minutes of the excrutiating THE HOUR with Geo. Strombohulkingtonopoulous. He scored both MacKay AND Stronach (but not at the same time, he's no Bob Crane).

Martin lives to filibuster another day. Harper should face a leadership review.
Some 12-yr-old (looking) blogger on the Strombopothon said that all the parties need to get new leaders. WHY IS A 12-YR-OLD BLOGGER SO OTM?

Todays political event, made me react quite poorly to the city councillor who came to my door. I ranted about the ineffectiveness of the current political arena and demanded that the next tie be settled in a bloody school yard game of red rover. Poor old bugger almost fall of the porch.
