anti-anti-Molly brigade plz kiss my ass here.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I did manage to find mine quite easily, to my surprise:

1. Ran (Akira Kurosawa, 1985)
2. Chinese Ghost Story, A (Siu-Tung Ching, 1987)
3. Hannah and Her Sisters (Woody Allen, 1986)
4. Brazil (Terry Gilliam, 1985)
5. Blood Simple (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, 1984)
6. Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese, 1980)
7. Purple Rose of Cairo, The (Woody Allen, 1985)
8. Raising Arizona (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, 1987)
9. Crimes and Misdemeanors (Woody Allen, 1989)
10. Kagemusha (Akira Kurosawa, 1980)
11. Broadway Danny Rose (Woody Allen, 1984)
12. King of Comedy, The (Martin Scorsese, 1983)
13. Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone, 1984)
14. This Is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner, 1984)
15. Radio Days (Woody Allen, 1987)
16. They Live (John Carpenter, 1988)
17. Down by Law (Jim Jarmusch, 1986)
18. Hairspray (John Waters, 1988)
19. Blue Velvet (David Lynch, 1986)
20. Airplane! (Jim Abraham, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, 1980)

27. Vanishing, The (George Sluizer, 1988)
28. Mystery Train (Jim Jarmusch, 1989)
29. Crimewave (Sam Raimi, 1985)
30. Rumble Fish (Francis Ford Coppola, 1983)

It still reflects the films I like best from the '80s. No idea and little interest in how much it reflects the best films of the decade, so I'm sorry if everyone else was doing that and I should have as well, but it's beyond me. Actually, I'd still have the same number one.

Skidmore loves himself some Woody Allen, I tell you what.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I think I may have undervalued him in that list.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I would like to say for the record that the best thing about these lists is that they give me ideas for things to rent (The Hidden, A Chinese Ghost Story, Diva, Possession, Crimewave, Berlin Alexanderplatz..), and all of the yelling back and forth is just the unhappy byproduct.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

This is a really commercial list (particularly in comparision to my 90's list), but fuck it, I'm no hardcore film buff so my picks are necessarily weighted toward childhood sentimentality and movies I've seen millions of times.

#28, #29, #30 were basically token votes. I'm not even sure that I've seen "The Secret of NIMH", but the book was one of my faves growing up. "They Live" is there on the basis of one fight scene.

1. This Is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner, 1984)
2. Superman II (Richard Lester, 1980)
3. Princess Bride, The (Rob Reiner, 1987)
4. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (John Hughes, 1986)
5. Raising Arizona (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, 1987)
6. La Bamba (Luis Valdez, 1987)
7. When Harry Met Sally (Rob Reiner, 1989)
8. Amadeus (Milos Forman, 1984)
9. Airplane! (Jim Abraham, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, 1980)
10. Shining, The (Stanley Kubrick, 1980)

11. Real Genius (Martha Coolidge 1985)
12. Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg, 1981)
13. Full Metal Jacket (Stanley Kubrick, 1987)
14. Fish Called Wanda, A (Charles Crichton, 1988)
15. Breakfast Club, The (John Hughes, 1985)
16. Die Hard (John McTiernan, 1988)

(I'm apparently the only person who likes Sid and Nancy better than Repo Man...)

I don't remember my order beyond

1. Repo Man
2. Prince of the City

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

I am very disappointed in the poor showing of my top two elsewhere. I included They Live mainly because it has Rowdy Roddy Piper.

things are looking good for blue velvet, which i've still never seen

andrew s (andrew s), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

at the very least this poll is a lot more unpredictable than the 90s one, where the only suspense at the top was how close goodfellas would manage to come to the other two.

andrew s (andrew s), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I am very disappointed in the poor showing of my top two elsewhere.

Ran is awesome, so I'll definitely be checking out Chinese Ghost Story.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

They aren't similar! Chinese Ghost Story is more like Crouching Tiger with a large dash of Sam Raimi, but better.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but they are similarly beloved by you.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Hm, I am unconvinced that that should mean anything to anyone.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I thought both Ran and Kagemusha were a bit flashy and lacking in content when compared to Kurosawa's earlier work. Ran was still better than Kagemusha though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Anyways, here's my list:

1. Down by Law (Jim Jarmusch, 1986)
2. My Neighbor Totoro (Hayao Miyazaki, 1988)*
3. Sex, Lies, and Videotape (Steven Soderbergh, 1989)
4. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Pedro Almodovar, 1988)
5. Repentance (Monanieba) (Tengiz Abuladze, 1987)*
6. King of Comedy, The (Martin Scorsese, 1983)*
7. Brazil (Terry Gilliam, 1985)
8. UHF (Jay Levey, 1989)*
9. Mystery Train (Jim Jarmusch, 1989)
10. Sweetie (Jane Campion, 1989)
11. Do the Right Thing (Spike Lee, 1989)*
12. Wings of Honneamise (Hiroyuki Yamaga, 1987)*
13. Crimes and Misdemeanors (Woody Allen, 1989)
14. Elephant Man, The (David Lynch, 1980)*
15. After Hours (Martin Scorsese, 1985)
16. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (Stephen Herek, 1989)
17. Atomic Café, The (1982)
18. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (Robert Zemeckis, 1988)*
19. Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, 1983)*
20. Top Secret! (Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, 1984)
21. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Steven Spielberg, 1989)*
22. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (John Hughes, 1987)
23. Ghostbusters (Ivan Reitman, 1984)*
24. Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis, 1985)*
25. Gremlins (Joe Dante, 1984)*
26. Akira (Katsuhiro Otomo, 1988)*
27. Dead Ringers (David Cronenberg, 1988)
28. Blues Brothers, The (John Landis, 1980)
29. History of the World, Part 1 (Mel Brooks, 1981)
30. Spaceballs (Mel Brooks, 1987)

The list is much more American than my 90s poll list, but I was a kid during the eighties and didn't see much "international" movies. Plus, I'm not that much into videos, more of a cinema guy, so I have to rely on whatever the local movie archie decides to show.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I agree about the '80s Kurosawas, Tuomas. But 'not as good as Seven Samurai' and 'best film of the '80s' aren't contradictory, for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Have you seen Red Beard, Martin? I've only seen it once years ago, but was immensely touched by it - it was one of the most humane films I've ever seen. It isn't "classic" Kurosawa though, so it's pretty hard to catch.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas, what do the asterisks mean?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I just copied the list from my e-mail, they were the films I could've written blurbs for.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I have seen it, and liked it a lot - much as I adore the samurai films most, I wish there were more chances to see the others too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)
