looking for a clean, non-seriffed font - friendly without being clingy, professional without being cold - to use on an artist's catalogue. one that isn't arial. for a mac.

jermaine (jnoble), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I like Gill Sans, and I like Frutiger, but mainly I like Gill Sans.

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I was just gonna post Gill Sans!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I like the versatility — as formal or as relaxed as you want it to be.

Help! Will someone who is actually qualified to make recommendations about such things (i.e., not me) please look at this Web page and recommend a font for the general text-y parts? The numerals, in particular, are crap for this kind of document.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou. Oh, and I doubt I could convince anyone to spend any money for a new font, so suggestions of "standard" fonts most appreciated.

quincie, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes and I really should be learning about these things, so please discuss you hearts out about why the current font sucks and why the recommended fonts are way better.

quincie, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

The numerals should become much less of a nuisance if you increase the leading (the space between the lines). These numerals, dipping under and sticking out, are called text figures or old-style figures or medieaval figures. They're typographically more 'preferable' than numerals at capital height, which most sans serif and standard system fonts use. For system fonts, you could try Verdana. It looks particularly great at 9 pt, though it may be too small for some people. Good luck!

Not really about fonts, but:

Okay, on my computer, which runs godforsaken Windows Vista, ClearType is on, and yes everything is nice and smooth, except in microsoft word, paint, etc. where things aren't, unless I turn OFF ClearType, and then everything is nice and smoothexcept for everywhere else. The fuck is up with this?

I love the really wide, thin stroke serif font Warner Brothers Records used on LP back covers in the '60s for the word "STEREO" between two arrows.
