Google groups!

This might be of interest only to researcher geeks like myself, but google groups now has usenet posting archived back to 1981. That's even more than dejanews ever had, though I still miss their search interface.

Nicole, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Woah! That so fascinates me. I'm there. I heart google.

Nick, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, the embarassment!

RickyT, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

First post of all on their archive is an incredibly dull (soon to be infamous?) post from 12/5/81 about electrostatic plotter paper, which no one responded to.

Weird reading the first one on AIDS (from singles.net):

The disease sounds very frightening. I had heard about it about two weeks ago. Seems like the public should be more aware of it. Anybody have any info on it?

[...] 5. Your best defense at present is to practice good personal hygiene habits (washing before handling food, after using the bathroom, etc).

Nick, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't worry RickyT, there isn't much embarassing things about you on ahem, rec.sport.cricket! There is however something that just looks disturbing but I won't bring this up on such a pure minded board like ILE. Hur.

Sarah, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NB I am a young wun and don't think I haf evah posted to a newsgroup.

Sarah, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We will not talk about anything else I may have posted too. Except most of you were there anyway. Oh well!

Sarah, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course now I have to google RickyT (though not til much later, access is blocked at work: evidently they know me all too well).

Nicole, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They've blocked your access to Google or to RickyT requests? Either way, it seems harsh.

N., Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey, one of these odd google things has reminded me about Blast Off Country Style - who I've nevah heard but always wanted to... WOW to me this is like DINOSAUR INTERWEB ace. I am going to write to newsgroups when I resurrect my laptop I am I am. AND CROSS-POST and I shall TELNET and I shall also, (oh hang on Telnet is nothing exciting really, shut up you are rambling) ohhhhhh I wanna go HOME.

Sarah, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, just google groups. I wouldn't be able to work without regular old google.

Nicole, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I suggest googling Tom also. alt.teens.poetry.and.stuff returns a hit. NB it may be a different Tom Ewing. But I need SOMETHING to giggle at (see grump thread).

From de.etc.finanz.boerse.misc.

Sarah, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't check out alt.music.alternative! A lot of it was just very very scary, in retrospect.

Nicole, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The earliest posts I can find by myself are

i. recommending early Scritti Politti.

ii. saying that lyrics are the least important part of music.

iii. refusing to pass judgement on albums until they've stood the "test of time"

I grew out of these viewpoints and SO CAN YOU!

Tom, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe i could grow into them?

gareth, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that internet archive thing is truly addictive and scary. as is this.

Samantha, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The earliest thing I can find that I posted is me making mild fun of a Cure-hater for giving _Wish_ a bad review. I'd also forgotten that I posted several things to alt.non-sequitur.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ii. saying that lyrics are the least important part of music.

Sounds like you were right on target, dammit!

My first post was helping somebody out regarding Front 242's _Evil Off_ tracklisting in early November 1993. MOST AUSPICIOUS. Then I made fun of someone posting about Pink Floyd on a.m.a., and was duly beaten down. *weeps*

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll never grow out of liking "Skank Bloc Bologna" and "Messthetics".

Though I'll admit they made better records later.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My earliest alt.music.alternative posts. Hmmm, not as embarrassing as I would have expected...

A tad more embarrasing are my VERY first usenet music postings on rec.music.misc... Although Ned will certainly approve of one of them.

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My first post I even say it is my first in the post. That was on a 1200 or 2400 baud modem through a local BBS.

nickn, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ANGELICALLY DISSONANT...TURBULENTLY IDYLLIC...SUBCONSCIOUSLY APOCALYPTIC

Most accurate, Brian.

I just stumbled across a 1994 thread about the Comsat Angels involving me and Glenn McDonald. Weird!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa, my first usenet post was 7 years ago yesterday. It was on Al Jourgenson being from Cuba but singing like a Brit on the early Ministry albums. Should I mention that I went by the cool nick "flail" back then? Nah, too embarassing. My first a.m.a. post was March of 99 on the New Star Wars Trailer!!!! thread.

bnw, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
it seems you can't get browse back the archives in chronological order past the first 1000 threads:

I want to check the archives of a particular newsgroup a hundred threads at a time, on their interface I can read "Threads 1-100 of about 24,600, after clicking on Next 100 threads >>> till I arrive at around "Threads 901-920 of about 24,600" I can only get back to

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Prev 100 threads

anyone knows about a reliable free newsgroup archives or how I could use/hack google group the way I want?

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I guess you could use the date range.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why I had never google my old usenet stuff. This is eerie.

My first post - April 19, 1994.

I alternated between doing this, hanging around the UT radio station like some college DJ groupie, and playing SimCity 2000 on my Mac. I just had an out-of-time experience.

Harold Media (kenan), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba, I tried again with the date range just to make sure and it's the same problem : I can only go back 1000 threads that way too.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It is my only link to the lyrical stylings of R.T.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but then you change the date range to start at the date of the 1000th post. Or am I misunderstanding?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

aha thank you very much your way works :-)

It's not possible to do it the way I wanted in the first place: I noticed for the webpage of Threads 101-200 the url ends with "start=100", webpage of Threads 201-300 ends with "start=200" etc up to "start=900". I tried to "hack" it by writing ex "start=1100" but got the error message :"Sorry, Google does not serve more than 1000 results for any query. (You asked for results starting from 1100.)"
