it is true that large discussions in anti masterbation texts among in americans dealt with phyiscal weakness, personal obessions, lonlieness, secretiveness, and an almost opedial neuroticism about going against parenting. the discusssion deals less with moral turpitude and more with corperal lassitude.

there is something in tje 20th century moving from the coperal to the moral--i just cannot figure out what it is.

I wonder if it were ever that blatant - much of C19th stuff is that physical stuff - there's a rgeat page somewhere showing an illustarion of the effects of masturbation on youth showing decline and fall of pubescent brilliance. I know in Oz there was a royal inquiry into falling birth rates and wanking came up because it was alledged Oz men were too busy tossing to give a toss about impregnating, so there governance is an issue, the physical leading to moral - and onanism was condemned for moral grounds in the bible, so maybe they intertwine, each having a spurting moment ofm orning glory before receding into impotence, upon which time fresh victims are needed to get condemnatory wood?

I'm sorry not to answer your question more directly anthony, but I've wondered about these people, who write these texts, and what kind of people they were. It's not very "public sphere" of me to want to know, but we must be able to draw conclusions about them. They wrote things in journals or, I dunno, gazettes, or maybe academic journals, or the publications of civic or altruistic organizations (often with the olde style of "raise em up the ladder of culture one rung at a time" attitude (to which project radio, among other things, was going to lend a hand)) anyway they wrote things in places where their breakdowns of the psychology of wacking it (among other things, probably, WHAT other things though?) were taken seriously, or at least seriously enough to survive long enough, and to be catalogued and picked up by libraries, that we could read them now. Which makes me kinda suspicious because people were really uptight back then, weren't they?

Don't "phyiscal weakness, personal obessions, lonlieness, secretiveness, and an almost opedial neuroticism about going against parenting" seem like just the kinds of things coming on in droves at just the same time as the rhetorical shift you say takes place? i don't think masturbation causes those things, i think those things cause the kind of conclusions that these particular writers decide they've ahem "come" to.

Anth, I'm saying that it seems to have been a moral issue (ahem) the whole time, there's nothing 20th C. about those attitudes towards masturbation. Late 20th C. sexual revolution makes masturbating OK (again?), that is the big change. So I guess I don't know what the 20th C. part of your argument is.
