Listen to the Texan. She knows what she's talking about.
Calvin Trillin says the same thing, actually. New York, restaurant capital of the world, any kind of food you can imagine, but not a single decent Mexican restaurant.
― slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)
There are a third of a million Mexicans in NYC now and many of them have restaurants. The Mexican food you can get here now is much more varied than it was 10 years ago. And Calvin Trillin is not a food writer.

Oddly enough, I was just reading an article about Mexican/US immigration focusing on NYC -- apparently a good chunk of NYC-located Mexican-born folks are from the state of Puebla, east of Mexico City. I don't know if they're the overwhelming majority, though.
― Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)
You really can't get Mexican food like you can in Texas. Not even in Mexico. It's a singular, awe-inspiring cuisine.
There's pretty good Mexican food in Chicago, as long as you stay out of any place where they speak any English at all.

― The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 27 May 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)
Nothing beats homemade tamales. Even the best tamale vendor won't have tamales as sabroso as the ones you almost have to slave over.
Cilantro is, as they say around here, U&K.
It's a good rule of thumb that the best Mexican restaurants will almost invariably be rundown-looking places that look as though they're about ready to crumble into nonexistence. The big, fancy, themed places almost always have the crappiest Mexican food.
Homemade tortillas -- the only way to go. If you look at an establishment that *doesn't* advertise homemade corn & flour tortillas, they aren't worth walking into. They *have* to have homemade tortillas; you can tell by how pillowy soft the flour tortillas are and by how thick and hearty the corn tortillas are.
Menudo -- again, best done at home, but if you do get it at a restaurant, it'd probably be best to squeeze that lemon juice into the soup before sampling it.
The good enchiladas will always be topped by a simple red enchilada sauce, not by chili, though if the restaurant's got good food overall and the chili's not overpowering, the enchiladas can be more than servicable.
Borracho beans have to be spicy.
And the guacamole has to be freshly made as well. It can't be a pureed travesty of a side dish. It has to be thick and lumpy and it has to look as though it's made up of mashed avocado, not as though it were some sort of disgusting avocado soup. Oh, and guacamole's not supposed to be spicy!!! It's supposed to be a cool and creamy side. This business of adding diced jalapeños into guacamole is madness. If you want crunchiness in guacamole, add onions! Onions are okay. Diced tomatoes -- totally okay. Anything spicy? Save it for the pico de gallo!

Strange...I had a yearning for Mexican earlier today, when I went out. But that'll have to wait until at least later this week, because I instead went to the store and got a pork roast.
P.S.: Does anyone have a recipe for posole? I had it ONCE nearly ten years ago, and it was so good I haven't forgotten it since then.
