Maybe I will! I can go pick up from Picante. I'm thinking...SUPER NACHOS. And I've still got some Coronas in the fridge.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm having pho for lunch.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

tomorrow. have been looking forward to it all week.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I am always disappointed when some restaurant in NYC is touted as having real Mexican. Has there been a thread about that or does Jody remember any good places that are up to her now-raised standard?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw nearly 7 or 8 Mexican places in Park Slope when i was in NY at the beginning of the month. Are none of those places any good? They looked OK to me (as I walked by).

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, maybe I'll thaw out some sauce and get my enchilada on tomorrow.

Actually that reminds me, we had brunch once at such a place with an unassuming name like the Park Slope Diner that was really good.

No, you need Thai! Thom Kha Kai, more specifically.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just chatting with a friend from high school online and she mentioned she might move to Mexico next year. All I could think of was godDAMN do I ever want some mexican food and margaritas.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I had some last night. ... But I am going to a bar after work that's run by a Mexican woman, and she's been known lay out some snacks, so ... maybe?

The pity is, I'd kill for pozole for lunch but i have no idea where i could find it around here.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I never had good (by my standards) Mexican in NYC.

::drool:: pozole. . .

you've gotta go to sunset park (brooklyn) and corona (queens).

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I never had good (by my standards) Mexican in NYC.

Listen to the Texan. She knows what she's talking about.

Calvin Trillin says the same thing, actually. New York, restaurant capital of the world, any kind of food you can imagine, but not a single decent Mexican restaurant.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

NOT TRUE NOT TRUE NOT TRUE -- did you read the article i posted?

There are a third of a million Mexicans in NYC now and many of them have restaurants. The Mexican food you can get here now is much more varied than it was 10 years ago. And Calvin Trillin is not a food writer.

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If I dug harder I'm sure I could've found something passable but overall us Texans are hard to please.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

well where did you go?

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I always bought into that Trillin thing too but Iimagine there's some OK stuff out there now. I wonder where all the Mexicans are from, though?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And Calvin Trillin is not a food writer.

?

Everything I've read by him has been about food.

I mean, I know he writes about other things, too...

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Sam, there's a ton of great food in NY that you can't get in Texas so why bother trying to something you can get at home any old time.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I am eating "Mexican" food right now!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

when is that trillin quote from?

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Early to mid 90's, I think, Jody.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder where all the Mexicans are from, though?

Oddly enough, I was just reading an article about Mexican/US immigration focusing on NYC -- apparently a good chunk of NYC-located Mexican-born folks are from the state of Puebla, east of Mexico City. I don't know if they're the overwhelming majority, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

overall us Texans are hard to please

You really can't get Mexican food like you can in Texas. Not even in Mexico. It's a singular, awe-inspiring cuisine.

There's pretty good Mexican food in Chicago, as long as you stay out of any place where they speak any English at all.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know too much about Puebla or its cuisine.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If you've had any dish with 'poblano' in the title...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmm poblanos are a staple of the food around here (tucson).

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

A random page I've found. There are doubtless others.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

There are a third of a million Mexicans in NYC now and many of them have restaurants.

So what? Can all Mexicans automatically cook? I'll tell you, because I found out the hard way -- they can't.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think as the other threads allude Mex food depends largely on where people immigrate from. Cities in TX can vary widely in this. Overall I love TX too much to stay gone anywhere for too long. Nothing ever measures up.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned with the etymology!

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hungry and cranky. Forgive me. I'll be back after I eat some Super Nachos.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

g. just whipped up a pitcher of margaritas. yumm.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 27 May 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Salud!

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy crap. I had fajitas for lunch without even knowing about this thread's existence!!! I kid you not; I got out of work and hightailed it to a family function at this Mexican restaurant. Fajitas and guacamole were had. And rice & beans that I doctored up with salsa. I'm still a bit on the full side, many hours after having lunch.

But then again, I'm like Miss Misery/Sam in that Mexican food is the everyday for me.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 27 May 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Also:

Nothing beats homemade tamales. Even the best tamale vendor won't have tamales as sabroso as the ones you almost have to slave over.

Cilantro is, as they say around here, U&K.

It's a good rule of thumb that the best Mexican restaurants will almost invariably be rundown-looking places that look as though they're about ready to crumble into nonexistence. The big, fancy, themed places almost always have the crappiest Mexican food.

Homemade tortillas -- the only way to go. If you look at an establishment that *doesn't* advertise homemade corn & flour tortillas, they aren't worth walking into. They *have* to have homemade tortillas; you can tell by how pillowy soft the flour tortillas are and by how thick and hearty the corn tortillas are.

Menudo -- again, best done at home, but if you do get it at a restaurant, it'd probably be best to squeeze that lemon juice into the soup before sampling it.

The good enchiladas will always be topped by a simple red enchilada sauce, not by chili, though if the restaurant's got good food overall and the chili's not overpowering, the enchiladas can be more than servicable.

Borracho beans have to be spicy.

And the guacamole has to be freshly made as well. It can't be a pureed travesty of a side dish. It has to be thick and lumpy and it has to look as though it's made up of mashed avocado, not as though it were some sort of disgusting avocado soup. Oh, and guacamole's not supposed to be spicy!!! It's supposed to be a cool and creamy side. This business of adding diced jalapeños into guacamole is madness. If you want crunchiness in guacamole, add onions! Onions are okay. Diced tomatoes -- totally okay. Anything spicy? Save it for the pico de gallo!

i didn't eat mexican food today. i had an "oriental chicken salad" (very nice green leafy lettuce, grilled chix, slivered almonds, mandarin orange pieces, sesame seeds, and sesame dressing) from bruegger's bagels, and it was actually quite good! i'm hankering for dinner now, but there's a thunderstorm outside. is this the thread where i order delivery from the pizza place?

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 May 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

thread hijack time. do i order: (a) chicken parmigiana sub* (b) 10" cheese pizza (b) 12" cheese pizza?

*i have to get used to saying "sub"; where i'm from it'll always be "hero"

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 May 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

I say (a). I had Mexican food of a sort tonight (I find it difficult to believe that chimichangas are real Mexican food even if they're tasty), and four pints of beer. I felt kinda sick after but I'm better now. Dee OTM re guacamole...I fucking hate it when guacamole is like baby food, and even though he didn't post about it on this thread Spencer Chow's OTM about regular hard tacos with seasoned beef, cheese, tomatoes and iceberg lettuce being good for you. I have to say that post was funny enough to where I had tears streaming down my face but it was true nonetheless.

Strange...I had a yearning for Mexican earlier today, when I went out. But that'll have to wait until at least later this week, because I instead went to the store and got a pork roast.

P.S.: Does anyone have a recipe for posole? I had it ONCE nearly ten years ago, and it was so good I haven't forgotten it since then.
