Meeting a famous figure.

If you had a chance to meet someone whose 'art' you grew up with and influenced you would you do it? I'm at a crossroads. I have the chance to meet someone who influenced me since fourteen and I'm unsure if I want to meet this person. Why?

Is it Benny Hawkins?

No. It's someone who is rather well known. Help is needed!

You said you were at a crossroads so I just thought....

People and art affect and change us in very different ways. I don't think I'd want to meet someone whose art had affected me - but I think that's because in order to meet them, properly, I'd need to articulate HOW it had affected me. And I don't think most busy artists have time for that, even assuming I'd be able to do it. Meeting on any other terms would seem dishonest somehow.

Thanks for the answer Tom. I've been thinking about this all day. One thing is: I've got nothing but respect for this person. But how would I approach it without kissing arse? On the other hand I don't want to seem hipper than thou and not by myself.

Hi Snoopy,:) Meeting a famous person is no different than meeting a new neighbor next door. That's what I have found to be true. I think that our time is worth as much as theirs is to them, and they appreciate the fact that you would take the time, as you appreciate their time is limited too! So why not go to meet who you want to? I would, and I plan to meet some people as well. Go for it! :)

I already hinted at this in a previous thread I started. This afternoon I will know if I will be able to meet my *cough* idol. He is not my idol, really, just someone whose music I have been a fan of for half a decade. Now I actually doubt if I really want to interview him. It's demystifying because sometimes they don't realize the impact their art has (on me or the public in general) and sometimes the intention/message is completely different. You find out that they are human. Not that you didn't know that beforehand. But it is easier to idolize someone from afar, you don't see the flaws very well. And also, you fear you'll make a fool in wet pants of yerself. :-)
