i won a hat singing karaoke! what have you won?

this weekend, after having a somewhat cruddy saturday, i agreed to go to jimd's new local (he moved, not the local) for their nightly lock in. it's an old man pub, and i figured it would be only ok. except they had karaoke! and there were only about 15 people in the whole place, including us. and the karaoke man thought it was cool that i'm american, and made me sing garth brooks with him. we did a live version of 'friends in low places' including him talking in the middle (which i've never heard before) and i had to read along in a terrible southern accent, which everyone apparently loved. and he gave me a grolsh hat.

what random things have you won?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

A TV and many Monopoly beauty contests.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

liar, i heard you only came second in those beauty contests.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

School prizes and things but nothing since I was about 16. I did once come second in a Mojo album review competition though.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

I won a karaoke competition in Fort Collins, Colorado with my timeless performance of Billy Idol's 'White Wedding'. My prize was booze vouchers, boringly.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

One of my fondest childhood memories is winning a medal for fifth place in a running contest with exactly five participants.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

once in a school race, i ended up seventh out of eight places. i got seventh place because the guy who was seventh got disqualified for not staying in his lane.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

i don't think i've ever really won anything.

our bowling team were 1st in the league but that was taking into account of handicaps, and thus was pretty meaningless (apart from to say we were the most improved team over the season)

i get second places, a lot. it sucks.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Second place is winning too, at least thats what I got told at sports day.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Also I won wine for my whole team on a team building excercise day.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but first place would have gotten me £1000 worth of HMV vouchers or however much it was, whereas second place got me diddly squat.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

£23,000 on telly.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

When I was at school, if you came top of your year you won £12 in book tokens, but if you were second in your year you only got £6 worth. Thus is inherent inequality drummed into heads at such impressionable ages.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

£12? Back in your day?!! Blimey, we only got a fiver for coming top of the class. And we had to be patronised by the PTA president in a book presentation ceremony to boot.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

you get book tokens? we only got a piece of paper saying well done. in primary school i was ALWAYS 2nd in class. it was crazy, even when i changed schools it only meant one teacher's pet (who is always first) got replaced by another!!

and only one guy got higher A-level results than I at school (but i got a higher degree than he did in uni!)

i'm STILL thinking of something that i've actually won outright.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

I won £50 for winning the literature prize at University!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

ken, this wasn't even a 'first place, second place' kind of thing, he just gave me a hat for no reason. so you're surely as much of a winner as me, right?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah but i never got a grolsch hat! :(((((

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

just last week i won $150, a bottle of champers and my name on the wall at uni for winning the negotiation and mediation comp. i guess that's not really random though.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

a dracula costume.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

i got given some awards in school i guess, one was a teacher's award thing for being the "highest achiever" in a-level chemistry (funnily enough i only got a C in that!!! it's ridiculous - the a-levels i actually got As in they gave the award to others because they showed the most improvement!)

and the other was a phoney "improving student lives" award!!! wtf! this was for making a (great i must say) video of the sixth-form (it was like a year book but in video, and more interesting, thing) it was only made for me to make personal profits by selling the video (i think i made £40 in the end!).. so i guess the book vouchers ended up as part of the profits!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

When you got to fifth year in my school, you also had prizes for individual subjects, and every one of these was an additional £6 worth of book tokens.

And yes, we had to attend a dreary annual prizegiving ceremony in front of all our "proud parents," plus I was in the school orchestra so also had to trudge through Gaudeamus Igitur, The Bartered Bride and other such twatrot.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

i won heaps of books when i was at school, one was a book about the kennedy family for the history prize in year 11. i think my mum was way more excited about that prize than when i actually graduated or got a proper job or whathaveyou as she thought jackie O was the height of elegance etc. although i definitely would have liked to win a dracula costume at some stage.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

you think school orchestra was bad, i remember once having to perform with the school gymnastics team at speech night. yeah doing cartwheels and whatnot to roxette's 'get dressed for success' before collecting the maths and social studies awards in a green and red lycra leotard in front of several hundred people is not a memory i cherish.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

I haven't won anything since high school. Used to be a real overachiever.

First, second and third places in annual creative writing contests 3 years in a row. I got progressively worse, apparently. Gold medal for my dance team. Best geography student three years in a row, top of the class a couple of years. Book vouchers for ALL of these.

First place cheerleading competition. Yep, I was also a cheerleader. I actually have a cheerleading medal. Haha.

Random prizes? I won a chocolate hamper in a lucky draw thingy at some formal function once years ago but nothing else since.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

ken c: my school had one of those "Improving student lives" awards too! But for nothing like making a video or anything. A library monitor almost always won it every year. probably cause no one ever wanted to be a library monitor.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

At our school we had annual summer "House Shows" - the whole school was divided alphabetically into five "Houses," so if your surname was in the A-C category (as mine was) you were part of Calder House, if it was D-H you were in Clyde House, etc. These House Shows took the form of an excruciating themed "revue" where everyone got on stage in costume, sang appropriate songs (thus if the theme was "America," you had to do "Let's Go To San Francisco," "California Girls," etc.) and do terrible dance routines. In front of an audience of parents and fellow pupils. Thankfully I managed to get out of doing these every year because they also ran a concurrent "Drama Week" and I always opted for acting in the plays instead.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

And the opening song for that "American" House Show - in 1977, kids, the Year of Punk - was "Is This The Way To Amarillo"!!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

oh, i guess i got like £7000 or so in prizes at university, too, which was pretty useful.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

All the things I've won :

1977 : The Henry Treece Memorial Prize for English Literature. Book tokens.

1987 : Inter University Rugby Cup. (We had an England international in our team!! Well he wasn't at the time, but he was later). A medal.

1990 : Thames Valley Evening League champions (cricket). A medal.

Our team won the school quiz evening four years in a row until we got banned. Prize was wine, each time.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

School quiz was at my kidz school, when they went to the same school.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

A bakewell pudding

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I won the raffle at a "3 bands for 3 quid" thing about 10 years ago. It was Bikini Kill, Team Dresch and Bis, and I got to shake the hand that punched Courtney Love. The prizes were rubbish: best of battle of the local metal bands, inflatable hammer and some dreadful vinyl thing.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

I won a Mexican wrestling mask from a gentleman of the same extraction by virtue of being drunk at a bus stop.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh, hah, I just remembered. I and my friend Pam won a pop quiz at Mark C's Tigermilking club years ago, and she chose the Shack album (foolish!) and I chose the bottle of vodka. Aposite.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

I won 7 quid at a wedding last weekend for guessing the time all the speeches would take up.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I got a book token for being Deputy Head Girl, £20 I think. I bought the biggest French/English dictionary that WHSmiths had and I've been using it reguarly ever since.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

School geography bee -- first place, three times. School spelling bee -- first place, once. Third place in school speech contest. A blue ribbon in a computer/technology fair at age six.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

i just won a free liter of coke product. i'm not sure how to redeem it; do i just go to the store i bought the soda from?

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

One time I won a free week's stay at some resort in Florida, but you had to be a member of the resort community or some shit to use it, so I gave it away. It was a resort full of old people. It was a Macarena contest. I played dirty and all the old men voted for me and I won in a landslide.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and once when I was a kid, I won this three-foot-tall solid chocolate soldier I wouldn't let anyone eat. I can't remember how I won it.
And when I was twelve or so, I won a prize for a drawing I submitted to Cricket magazine. It was a really awful drawing and I remember being pissed off because I'd submitted what I'd thought were much better pieces many times in the past. I think I won a set of paintbrushes or something, and my drawing was in the magazine.
And I won $20 on a scratch-off ticket I spent my last dollar on.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Have never won money. Alas. Lottery's no friend of mine, obv.

And don't remember much about winning things or stuff at school... O well, prolly did win some sports competitions - 'twas a *very* small school, you know :)

I have won an Iggy Pop LP and also an REM LP from BBC World Service, tho.
And a medal in a local district's basketball competition. Where our li'l pluckyteam of 78/79 vintage came first. Ha. (I do wonder where that goddam medal is now, hm)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I won a copy of "The Division Bell" at my friend's bar mitzvah.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I got a book token for being Deputy Head Girl, £20 I think

tee-hee.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

I won a copy of the second Stone Roses album in a pop quiz the day it came out, but I'd already bought it that morning. Another time I won a set of pokemon golf balls and a pikachu tie, neither of which have ever been used.

I would have won the karaoke but when I got up to sing Like A Prayer, colette came with me to sing backing vocals, and then halfway through the intro she nudged me and said "my microphone isn't working!" and then she grabbed mine and made me sing into the broken one and then nobody could hear me and I ended up just singing the choir sections to myself while she did the "woah-oh-oh" bits on top. I wuz robbed! :)

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

For about three weeks, I'd walk into the Gas Mart with a cap for a free 20 oz. Coke product, get a Barq's Root Beer, and come back the next day with another cap.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

A slightly stingy £25 in a poetry competition (2nd prize).

Sod all else unless you count the odd pub quiz (mostly wine).

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

aw thanks to PJ miller I now remember i once won a plastic rose that appeared on TOTP on the BBC, by winning a painting competition with this

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

I won trivial pursuit when it 1st came out. Don’t ask what year, I can’t remember. I still have it now.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck winning a hat!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

I came 2nd in an art competition at school and won £6.50. Which seemed like a strange amount until the 1st place person won £11...

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

I won a food processor at a work event this year. And I won a day off work in our "day off work" raffle last month.

Other than that I have won very little of note. I did "win" £10 by finding it on the pub floor on Sunday however...

Bill A (Bill A), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

nine months pass...
I won an ipod nano! For filling out a library survey! OMG. Somehow I am way more thrilled than if someone told me I'd won the equivalent amount of money, which is weird!

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

!!

that's because ipod nanos are WAY cool!

congrats!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

i think if i win the money i'd probably have just put it in the bank, and then it'd just get slowly chipped away on drinks and food or something, and so ipod nano is so much thrilling!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

I won an Alice In Chains video from a competition in Kerrang once. Nothing since.

chap who would dare to be a stone cold thug (chap), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

My boif and I won a karaoke contest singing "Hungry Like The Wolf" together. We are terrible singers, but we did this sort of interpretive dance thing and I gave him a piggyback ride through the last half of the song. Our prizes were clear plastic Bacardi logos with blinking red lights in them.

I also won an oak bookshelf when I was 10 by filling out entry forms at a furniture store while my parents looked around. It is the only nice piece of furniture I own.

I won a Care Bears video when I was four in a coloring contest.

Abbott (Abbott), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

I won a fluxblog contest just today! Six promos. Wheee!

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 23 March 2006 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

I once won $50 in an office pool. Didn't even know I was in! Took everyone across the street for breakfast and came back about 70 bucks poorer.

More recently won a nine lb Toblerone bar for having bought booze at the local duty-free. Took it to Thanksgiving dinner and had to cut it with a hacksaw.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 23 March 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

but you got baked beans instead?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

I have never won any baked beans.

This was probably fortunate news from the perspective of other late-night bus passengers.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Age six: won a blue ribbon in a poster-making contest for a school-wide fair held in the cafeteria. It poster showed a Crayola-ed image of an enormous pumpkin hollowed out to create a pie stand bearing the legend "Peter Pumpkineater says 'Come, come. Eat my food and you will say 'Yum, Yum.'" Imagine the rest of the posters at this time, if you wish.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

Age seven: won a blue ribbon in the Imagination Convention (worst name ever for an INVENTING contest) for inventing a bib that has an upside-down picture on it (so that the baby can see the picture [?!?!!?]). At this time it is appropriate to imagine the rest of the entries.

In third grade I would claim this same title with my invention of the Secret Pocket Necktie (least original invention ever).

roxymuzak, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

(in-between years, won nothing but dumb singing things and things to do with playing a game called Bible Bowl [that's real])

roxymuzak, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

Age 21: Won a Guzzler™ full of blue, tarty drink at a gay club for singing Roxy Music's "Virginia Plain," and complaining mid-song that the words were wrong ("Listen to the love weep" (huh?) instead of "teenage rebel of the week", for what it's worth [a drink, apparently.])

roxymuzak, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

Guess you can imagine the rest of the singers and their selections at this point.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

I won a bottle of Pomagne for dancing YMCA better than three other people!

Although I came second in the hulahoop comp, I was stoked anyway as I've never been able to do this, but seeing the girl who can, I *got* the howto, and managed 15 seconds worth.

Yeah, it was a weekend at a holiday park. Amber 'volunteered' me.

Mark G, Thursday, 15 November 2007 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

I won the mockery of every pupil in my class and my teacher. I sang. They cringed.

nathalie, Thursday, 15 November 2007 12:58 (seventeen years ago)
