one of the women, a poetry teacher, reminds me of ileanna douglas' character in ghost world, in that "oh god i can't believe i have to say these awful things but i don't know how to teach so i have no choice but to speak in the same cliches my teachers spoke in" way.

I had a girl over to my room in college once and when she saw I had "Ariel" she snickered and said "oh my God."

― Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 June 2005 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i have "ariel" but i only bought it so cute boys would squeal with delight and marvel at my sensitivity.

I dont get the Plath hate, really. Hate some of her more rabid clueless fans sure, but some of her late poetry is fierce and lively, and I really like it a lot.

Her prose is shit, mind you.

ts: sylvia plath vs. ian curtis

― The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 2 June 2005 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the Bell Jar was fantastic when I read it in high school. I was very disappointed with the boy in her story, though, and dismayed at the metaphor she used to describe his scrotum.

― Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 June 2005 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I will not repeat it here.

― Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 June 2005 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i will send an awful rowing towards god to anyone who sends me their copy of ariel, just so you know how to do femminist confessional poetry.

― anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 2 June 2005 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the bell jar is one of my favorite books. i like her prose more than her poetry.

what i REALLY don't get is this whole "anne sexton is better than sylvia plath" thing. she seems a LOT whinier and more rambling and self-indulgent to me than plath ever did.

― J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know any Sylvia Plath. S/D, anybody?

― Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the women, a poetry teacher, reminds me of ileanna douglas' character in ghost world,

"Mirror ... Father.
Mirror ... Father"
