the guy with the puffy pleated pants pulled way up is classic, at the very least.

Amon (eman), Friday, 3 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Only saw about ten minutes of this show but it was awesome.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 June 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

I watched bits of it last night. I was a little annoyed because only one of the dudes is really geeky and he seems to be totally hamming it up - I bet he's an actor like that really dorky dude that was on Average Joe. A couple of the "geeks" are almost handsome. And I was also pissed that the fake supergeek won the dance contest by exaggerating his dorkiness, instead of the nosebleed guy who actually made an effort and did a really good job except for bleeding all over himself.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

what's the deal with this show? i saw the tail end of an ad for it, but didn't tune in. obviously, there are these "beauties" & these "geeks" but what's the catch? or the motivation for either side?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

There are beauties and there are geeks and that's pretty much it.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure that was the exact text of Ashton Kutcher's pitch to the NBC execs, except maybe with some "dudes" scattered around.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

so, you know, none of the geeks is actually a millionaire or anything?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

The twist is that one of the geeks is secretly kind of dumb.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if they'll ever have a version with geeky/smart girls and jock dumb dudes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

the geeks have to make the gals smart, and the gals have to make the geeks cool. but yeah, except for the jerry lewis dude the geeks aren't geeky enough. they all should have been jerry lewis. it's pretty poorly made. it looks very very staged. not that i won't watch it again. of course i will.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

one of the geeks is secretly dumb?! that is the most absurd thing! i hope you're joking!!

sarah: otm. i'm not usually on the lookout for gender stereotypes & opportunities for grrl power . . . but lately, seems like it's all over the place!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, kelsey, that was a joke.

The thing about a show with dorky girls and hot dumb guys = no one would watch it. It's sad but true.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

i am so glad i wasn't the only one to watch this. i totally agree with NA about the dance contest, that was ridiculous.

"which is further south, south dakota or north carolina?"

i'd like to think that people aren't that consistently ignorant of what you'd think would be general knowledge (for an american, in that example), but i've known some people like that irl. i had to explain to an acquaintance once that australia and austria were very different places, on different sides of the world.

yeah, i like sarah's idea too.

i keep xposting

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

(Ooh, Julia, I'm sending you an email. Watch out!)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

i caught the first episode of this tonight. most of the geeky guys are actually pretty shaggable -- and i'd go on a date with the "white urkel" secure in the knowledge that it'd be an entertaining night out. he reminds me of my cousin seth, who's now around that age.

still, it's disappointing to see a group of otherwise smart guys go mental for these disposable dumbshit pieces of skank. they probably don't even notice the cute smart girls they know.

two weeks pass...
anyone still following this?

conclusion on wed.

the thing feels more and more staged as time goes on, but the social dynamics are fun, esp. the girl that the "cool" geek has been fawning over and who is obv. an attention-hound, playing him against urkel dude and so forth.

besides the staged thing, at least some of the personalities have turned out to be really interesting.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 4 July 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

i'm following this! i like mindi a lot! and i feel bad for richard because i can't help but think he's hardcore adhd/autism/aspie and that if the producers of the show had any sense whatsoever they'd have picked up on this earlier and not cast him. but this is an ashton kutcher production, so i don't expect ethics. i used to know a guy who was a lot like richard and while he was extremely frustrating and sometimes creepy, i knew he had bigger problems than just being "annoying." not to get all chuck about it.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 July 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

and that guy had aspirations of being an actor/comedian too, so i don't think richard is as phony as people are saying. i bet in both cases people saw their outrageousness and said (maybe condescendingly) "you should go into acting." and what else can you do when you're like that?

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 July 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

shawn (the mensa boy scout) and joe (the hip-hop albino) have blogs! read some of shawn's -- no real dirt yet unfortunately. he's under some $5 million nondisclosure agreement until the end of the season.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

chances of this concept being turned around, hot guys, geeky girls? 1 in 79?

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

guys are such pussy hounds that they probably won't need much convincing to give it up for the geeky girls.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

hell, all the geeky, awkward girls will look like Mandy Moore and Rachel leigh cook anyway

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

Sorry but I read the description of this in the Guardian Guide and it just sounded like the most offensive thing ever. I, too, will only watch when they have the requisite Pretty In Pink geeky-girl/popular guy scenario.

Except what would the average Geeky Girl actually want with the popular guy? It would be pointless. Argh. Delete humanity, please.

MIS Information (kate), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

they should do geeky guy/geeky girl. or a free-for-all with geeks and bimbos of all genders, just to see who goes for whom.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

is anyone else really bugged by the "social experiment" description the wb keeps trotting out?

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

does it seem like they geeks are being madeover wholesale whilst the hot girls are not being changed as much?

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

i don't think any of them are being made over all that much. the girls are doing what they have to do to win the money, while the guys who are exhibiting the most change were probably playing up their awkwardness at the start.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

Geeky girls are usually super-hott tho, so what would be the point of that?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

As my brother once complained, back when I was riding the wave of the dot.com boom "How come geeky internet guys hang out with other geeky guys, while geeky internet girls hang out with rock stars?"

MIS Information (kate), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

A guy in my dorm went to the same undergrad as Richard, and reported that he was much the same back then too.

I saw J03 H4N50N (short blond geek) at my dining hall! I didn't ask for his autograph, though. :(

Leeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 4 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

richard went to brandeis! that's so perfect. joe is university of chicago, right?

SHINE ON AMERICA (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

I expect he's graduated by now, but yes. A short story he wrote appeared in our online lit. mag!

Leeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

does it seem to anyone else the guys get way more characterization-time, generally, than the women?

final episode on now, east coast time. i really don't want either of the guys to win, but i like mindy more than caitalin, for whatever reason?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

ok so the ending of the show was lame.

this had so much more potential before it just fizzled out. meh.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 7 July 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm curious where you see the potential. I felt like I was slumming whenever I watched this.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 7 July 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

aw man, richard and mindi were SO CLOSE! and honestly, who knows someone's middle name after two weeks? how many people's middle names do you know?

chief of chaff (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 7 July 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

tune in next week for the reunion episode!

chief of chaff (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 7 July 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

does it seem to anyone else the guys get way more characterization-time, generally, than the women?

This is because the women are already perfect: pretty and dumb. < /sarcasm>

Oh no my TV premiere!

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

i really want that to be true.

i thought it started tonight, jbr.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Huh. I never realized "Shot Girl" was a career option.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

I gather money shot girls are in high demand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

i really loved the first season of this! i hope the guys are as good this time as they were the first time around.. also, less annoying bitches. some of the women in the first season (specifically the NBA dancer girl) were unbelievably terrible.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

one of the guys is a friend of mine's best friend from middle school. she is ridiculously excited about watching it. i don't know which guy yet, but i'm curious!

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

i thought it started tonight, jbr.

there's a pre-premiere "casting call special" tonight.

2 columbus circle in 1964 (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, so this was really good.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

i forgot to watch!! has it been bittorrented yet?

yvette yreka (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

Not sure. But wow, it was really good.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

I believe that the "geeks" deserve that title more than the "beauties".

adamrl (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

I saw it quite by accident, but it was good.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

!! i cant believe i sat through that pre-premiere and now i cant watch the show anyway because its on at the same time as the office AND the OC. We only have so much recording equipment.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

I wish I was geeky enough to be on it. I got the impression you have to be, you know, a virgin.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

what's the girl who had the answer the question about the screwdriver? SHE WILL BE THE ONE TO WIN. the blonde curly haired girl is NASTY and NASTY.

killy (baby lenin pin), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

The girl with the screwdriver answer was so cloying ditzy I had to love her.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

my friend's best friend from middle school got online afterward and said "did you see me on tv? did you see me on tv? did you see my britney spears joke?" he also said that the chief benefit of participating in the show was that he didn't have to pay rent for a couple months.

i only watched the first 10 minutes or so, though. then i went to get pizza.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

The girl with the screwdriver answer was so cloying ditzy I had to love her.

Did you see the preview where she says "Maybe I'm happy and smiley all the time because I'm hiding something on the inside..." and her face looks contorted and super-giddy/super-pained?

Priceless!!

killy (baby lenin pin), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

The beauties are kind of rough-looking based on the WB page.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

This show is great. I'm going to watch it every week with Ian.

Did you see the preview where she says "Maybe I'm happy and smiley all the time because I'm hiding something on the inside..." and her face looks contorted and super-giddy/super-pained?

I seriously do want to pinch her little chipmunk cheeks

adamrl (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

IM GLAD I DIDNT GO TO THE CASTING BECAUSE THESE CHICKS R BUSTED

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Friday, 13 January 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

The blonde chick from last season that returned with Richard in the beginning is ridiculously beautiful and likeable.

Laura H. tracks monkeys with lasers (laurah), Friday, 13 January 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

OK the only girls who are even kind of cute are Ty and...uh...the blonde dental assistant (why are they all dental assistants?). I'm with the dudes on this, torn UP. And Wes is hotter than any of those girls are by like 700x!!!!!! I mean that dude is super cute. This show makes no sense to me. I should watch it and annoy the crap out of myself.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 13 January 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

no way, i'm with "adamrl," that chipmunk cheeks bitch is a hottie.

killy (baby lenin pin), Friday, 13 January 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

but which one is the blonde with the chipmunk cheeks??? None of the girls on the site fit the description being given here.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 13 January 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

you only have to go to school for two years to be a dental assistant, and you're always employable. at least that's what a dental assistant told me.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 13 January 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

but which one is the blonde with the chipmunk cheeks???

none! she's a brunette with very straight hair.

killy (baby lenin pin), Friday, 13 January 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

I would have given that one decent-looking dude my number the moment he told me that his job was TRACKING MONKEYS WITH LASERS. AWESOME.

Laura H. tracks monkeys with lasers (laurah), Friday, 13 January 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

whoa.

yvette yreka (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 January 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

this show!!!!!!!!

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 19 January 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

i am really sad that tyson and thais got eliminated!

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Saturday, 28 January 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

We are having a British version of this show starting soon. Though, I saw the guys in the paper, they don't look very overtly geeky.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 28 January 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

all british men looks kinda geeky according to our imported television. that is, the office & monty python, basically. and bbc news.

it's like, there's a fucking DUNGEON MASTER on TV, and he's doing pretty well at hanging out with hot chicks. the girls are usually hot, but rarely intelligent or tolerable. there is one in particular who i really hate. the one who likes shoes a lot, curly blonde hair. god she's so apathetic it hurts.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 29 January 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe that NO ONE ELSE ON ILX still likes this show?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Monday, 30 January 2006 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
Not sure if it's worth starting a new thread about the UK version of this (shall I? are there enough fellow fans out there?). But it's completely my favourite show on TV - Ed! Ed is adorable and must must win, and I guess the producers think so too because his win just then was so shockingly rigged (chemical formula for water vs chemical formula for SALT???).

All the geeks are pretty ace and all the girls have their good points. My favourites are the sassy boxing ring girl and Elissa who SHOCK HORROR actually fancies a geek! The only one who I don't like is the page 3 girl, she treats fisherman hat geek terribly (and she best be nice to him now that he won her the fashion task).

And if the idea of it wasn't already ace enough, it even has a fantastic voiceover from that Peepshow geek guy Mark. 10/10.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

looking forward to this tomorrow!

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

god, you guys fuckin suck.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 23 February 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

i still haven't watched this season -- i have to torrent these.

the bitchy guy in the pince-nez from the old films (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 February 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm watching! the haircuts were BOGUS.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 23 February 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

Those guys are not all geeks. They're just fashion-deaf and shy.

remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 23 February 2006 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

this is on tonight! i forgot to watch last week. i hope the larper didn't get cut!

bell_labs, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

the "geek" girl is a MUSICOLOGIST and i don't think would have any trouble getting laid around here. seriously what guy doesn't want to date a musicologist. or would date a "cigar model" or "professional betty boop" over that?

bell_labs, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

didn't really work because most of the girls weren't that beautiful, and most of the fellas weren't that nerdy/ugly. you had a few guys in there who were regular meatheads who just happened work in a lab r something.

max r, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

or something
