War of the Wal-Marts

After the apocalypse, the only buildings standing will be Wal-Mart retail centers. The people inside will be the only humans left on earth. They'll have plenty to subsist on but when supplies start to run out they'll want more. The Wal-Marts will break from the ground and cross the globe like hovercrafts in search of other Wal-Marts. They'll have cannons filled with rotting food from those McDonald's they always have inside Wal-Marts. One by one Wal-Marts will fall across the world. Eventually only one will reign supreme. And then out of nowhere---

An army of Target.

I don't think they sell bullets at Target, so they're screwed.

Plus there's the unfortunate logo.

Is this going to be as biased as I think it is?

No love for WalMart, but this kind of thing usually does more harm than good.

I think Target has more of a chance than K-Mart.

Sarah, YES!

Not sure what you mean by that. Why wouldn't a documentary on the hidden "costs" of low-price Wal-Mart goods be biased? It's very premise makes its bias clear, and there's nothing wrong with that at all.

one month passes...
article in the NY Times today:

How Costco Became the Anti-Wal-Mart

..."I've been very well rewarded," said Mr. Sinegal, who is worth more than $150 million thanks to his Costco stock holdings. "I just think that if you're going to try to run an organization that's very cost-conscious, then you can't have those disparities. Having an individual who is making 100 or 200 or 300 times more than the average person working on the floor is wrong."

Nearest Sam's location is 35 miles, nearest Costco is 125 miles, but Costco is so much better. It's worth it to keep the Costco membership active. I wish TN's liquor laws were as progressive as California's — the wine selection in the Redding Costco was awesome, the bouze selection was okay I guess (I don't bother with hard stuff), and I could get Sierra Nevada Pale for $21/case.

Plus when we were broke in CA, a Polish and a soda was the best $1.50 meal in town, then over to the apple pie and cheesecake samples for dessert.

Plus, nice business model.

is there a Costco around Knoxville? I want to start encouraging my Sam's Club-patronizing parents to go there...

I didn't realize Costco was so cool! Thanks for the link.

that's the thing. like what the article points out, you can have a great business like this that offers great service to people and good prices and NOT FUCK OVER your employee population. holy shit, unions! what a thought!

tho it's great that all the wall street advisors mentioned are fucked in the head.

Gee, for some strange reason, Arkansas doesn't have any Costco's. Wonder why?

Apparently the revaluing of the yuan might hurt Wal-Mart a little. Uh, I can't really explain this very well -- Rasheed Wallace to thread?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

China had a favorable exchange rate to inflate export numbers, Wal-Mart buys most of their products from China (if not most, then many), Wal-Mart will have to start paying more for a big chunk of their product.

I'm willing to bet that Costco and most other big-box retailers are in a similar situation, though maybe not as severe as Wal-Mart.
