I miscalculated the punch this drink has now I'm having a hard time staying off the floor.

Did you drink it warm or cold? It's tricky when you drink it cold because you don't *notice* you're drinking alcohol. So they tell me. My mom's a big sake drinker. I think shouchu (sp?) is now very popular in Japan. Cheap but a quick way to get drink.

It is room temp...not heated just room temp, straight from the store... ONE CUP OZEKI JUMBO brand (I've had four). Sochu is basically the same thing as sake but I thinks its origins are Korean... It tastes the same to me. I do not drink too much. I did not like warm sake when I tried it because it cleared out my sinuses like extra strength wasabi. A lot of people I know like drinbking Chu Hi... fruit flavored SOCHU drinks that taste good but hit you like a hammer.

Drinking an entire bottle of that by myself one night got me more drunk than drinking an entire bottle of tequila straight ever did.

I usually see it spelled Soju.

Also, if you're in Berkeley be sure to visit the Takara Sake tasting room.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

soju = korea, sochu = japan

Hakkaisan makes the best sake that I've ever tasted. I bought a few bottles that I'm saving for special occasions. It's from Niigata prefecture--where the big earthquake was last Halloween, also home to Fujirock.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

soju is chemical based
sake is rice based

How does one drink sake alone? Isn't it forbidden to pour one's own cup?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

drink straight from the bottle

How does one drink sake alone?

What I did was this:
I walked my ass down to the Family Mart. I laid down 1000 Yen for 4 "cups" of Ozeki, got 160 Yen back in change then walked my happy ass back to my friend's house where I'm crashing until I get my happy ass kicked out Japan. I then threw all four cups down my throat and the world became a happier place. I went out to get more later but got distracted when I passed the fuck out trying to watch SNATCH with Japanese subtitles.

"Connoisseurs of this palely pungent rice wine pretend they can discern variations in taste and quality in over fifty brands. But to the novice all sake seems to have been brewed in the same vat—a toddy, pleasant at first, cloying afterward, and not likely to echo in your head unless it is devoured by the quart, a habit many of Japan's bons vivants have adopted. " — Truman Capote, "The Duke in His Domain," The New Yorker, 1957

Maybe sake seems so much more potent because one is already sitting on the floor when drinking it.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Sunday, 5 June 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

TRUMAN CAPOTE = FULL OF SHIT

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Sunday, 5 June 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)
