im saying dud cos theyre too damn pricey, screens arent THAT much bigger, sound isnt that much better, you have to pay for a travelcard to actually get there, plus theyre just overrated in general. stick to local cinemas, i say.

d. otoh, i have to get a bus ticket wherever i go.

n_RQ, Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

classick if it's the prince charles, dud if it's anywhere else, for the reasons mentioned above. the prince charles is the only reason i've seen 95% of the films i've seen over the last 6 years. www.princecharles.com

Shame however Curzon are expanding. Canterbury is the new West End!

will be weird if the curzon soho goes. theyve just done it up! but theres going to be a new picturehouse where the cineworld on shaftesbury ave used to be so that could be interesting. renoir is now curzon bloomsbury too, its going to be an arthouse multiplex apparently. shame cos i liked the old renoir set up. decided im going to give the BFI a wide berth for a while as the atmosphere (or something about it) is just a tad stuffy and lifeless (unless its something im dying to see).

i do still like the PCC very much but calling it a fleapit is just inaccurate. its not a luxurious place like the curzon or bfi but its not a dump either. also, the pcc could be a tad more adventurous (though i love their commitment to 35mm).

New Picturehouse in the Trocadero too - I've heard that Picturehouse want to put Curzon out of business, which seems mean. Try to avoid the west end in general though, it's just stupid expensive - ticket and bar prices both.

ledge, Monday, 2 February 2015 11:20 (ten years ago)

yeah i dont know if shaftesbury avenue is big enough for the both of those arthouse-ish cinema chains.

StillAdvance, Monday, 2 February 2015 11:22 (ten years ago)

I bet I'll be pissed off when I see what they've done to the Renoir.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 2 February 2015 11:39 (ten years ago)

has anyone been to the rowley leigh cinemarestaurant?

Moyes Enthusiast (LocalGarda), Monday, 2 February 2015 12:34 (ten years ago)

cinema and food is the last barbarism

saw a lot of great films at the old renoir, the whole bunker style really made it feel like a retreat

i'll have to come over this year and go to the sinny.

Thats what they say Australia, not here

In England we say we are going to the Old Cunt Show

I know I know. Possibly my fave cinema in London, be glad to go 'home' again, even if I will hate it.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 21 March 2015 14:37 (ten years ago)

see you there!

Don't hedge your bets there or anything.

Matt DC, Saturday, 21 March 2015 14:51 (ten years ago)

so this is 18 quid a ticket! Me and friend had to glance at each other before going for it just this once and never again.

RIP Jean Renoir

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Monday, 30 March 2015 08:47 (ten years ago)

Also looks like its a goodbye to Curzon cinemas. I went to Curzon Soho to see somehting else two weeks ago at the 12pm screening, and it was normal peak prices.

But hey you could get a £3.50 for coffee and pastry - which I took - but you know why that option suddenly presented itself.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 30 March 2015 08:48 (ten years ago)

It was sickening to see RENOIR in big block letters.

If I was a student I wouldn't be able to afford it. Maybe they all use torrents but arthouse wise seeing these things in a big screen is important.

The re-design is over the top, for what is a fkn cinema - friend said this is v American and that perhaps they are going for the food option as well although there wasn't any sign of this.

(Curzon Mayfair was always expensive and I hardly ever went..I suppose another bit of London becomes like Mayfair then)

Its weird - so many great memories of that place. Don't want to romanticize or anything. Just where I went on a lot of mornings. I see Film 4 are showing 4 Weeks, three months and two Days tonight at 1am, and that was such a great early sunday morning screen at the Renoir.

#common sense opinions then: 1) otoh it possibly wasn't sustainable that screenings were never sold out. 2) The cost of it has to be paid for. 3) Ultimately cinema is one of a number of entertainment options etc etc. 4)kill me now I hate common sense

xyzzzz__, Monday, 30 March 2015 09:05 (ten years ago)

went to the website, all set to mock it for being so expensive these days, but turns out the programme is dope as hell. Veblen goods FTW I guess

A MOOC, what's a MOOC? (Bananaman Begins), Monday, 30 March 2015 09:34 (ten years ago)

you mean the auteur film fest? seen most of 'em. I am ancient.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 30 March 2015 09:50 (ten years ago)

the rep auteur fest titles seeemed to be reasonably priced, 7.50 plus booking fee. its only in the main screen that the tickets are ridiculously priced. never been sure about the timings for curzon's 'early bird' tickets, they seem to change it a lot. and its not THAT cheap either. but with the new curzon, the tickets seem to be priced according to the screen, the smaller ones are cheaper i think.

i wouldnt bother with them anyway. not when you have the rio or pcc or ica.

StillAdvance, Monday, 30 March 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

actually looks like the cheaper tickets are just for the auteur fest... doubt i will be visiting much unless i have the day off then!

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/aug/05/everyman-the-chain-pushing-to-bring-home-cinema-to-the-high-street

this doesnt really sound like a great alternative to whats already out there, but i suppose more high street cinemas is no bad thing. just a shame these supposed boutique cinemas dont really do anything special programming wise. they seem like places for couples to sit on a nice sofa and eat like they would do at home in their living rooms, just now with a big screen in front of them.
