based on the postings below. they are: old, repetitive, lumped in with emo, 4/4 guitar rock, and other arguably boring things.

but: when i saw them last month, it was the best show i've gone to in a long time. so what's going on?

nick b, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that was, of course, supposed to go on the other side. oh well--over here you can talk about laura ballance's terrible fashion sense.

nick b, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so what's going on?

Maybe they finally got good (keep in mind the last time I saw them a year and a half ago I was reminded about how boring I always found them...).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's To Shutting Up was a dissapointment for me. Rather boring.

turner, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not classic. But still rather good. Parts of Foolish and Incidental Music get regular spins at chez ESOJ. Their recent singles have been very enjoyable too.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classick. Not only for their own musick but also for Merge. Then again they did release 69LurveSongs. :-) Shouldn't this be on ILM by the way?

helen fordsdale, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Superchunk like a proper American word, cos whenever I see Cartoon Network do a superchunk of cartoons I think of the lousy lumbering rock band which is an odd juxtaposition in my little head.

Pete, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Superchunk make me salivate because I always think of Super Fudge Chunk ice cream, but it makes my sister nauseous 'cos it reminds her of blowing chunks.

I guess that's a good example of how opinion on Superchunk is divided. Personally I'm rather fond of their robust sound, and I still rate "Indoor Living" as a minor classic. I've met Laura Ballance before and thought she was a real sweetie.

Trevor, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

superchunk is not quite a justified american word.

but it seems to be on its way.

yeah!!!!!!

Mr. Que, Monday, 25 June 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, they were OK. That I haven't played their records in 10-12 years probably helped.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Seed Toss was good. Slack MF. Tie a Rope to the Back of the Bus.

but there was about a 5-song stretch where I didn't recognize one song ...

whatever, they're fun.

dmr, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

i LOVED driveway to driveway:

dmr, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

"rsvp"

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

without starting any fights, i always thought that "first part" and other superchunk songs were the great pop sonic youth songs that sonic youth were incapable of writing.

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

i really don't want to fight though. okay, sonic youth fans? this is ile. in fact i am going to step away from the computer.

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

no, scott that seems very OTM

Mr. Que, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

there are some pretty superchunky songs on rather ripped

dmr, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

and to flip it jams run free is the awesome noisy/poppy slow jam that superchunk could never write.

Mr. Que, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

it was good! couldn't hear mac's guitar very well, but the vocals were prominent enough that i now know what the laughter guns are.

i think i might have seen hstencil?

mookieproof, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

jams run free at sonic youth's show at the pool was my top concert moment of 2006

perfect collision of weather / friends / beer / musical radness

xpost

dmr, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

i don't even know who you are, mookieproof.

and (along with the daydream nation show) on the average-hottest weekend of the year

gabbneb, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I'm sorry. As the drummer, I thought that was my job to count the songs off. But if that's something you want to do, whatever.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

strongohulkington, Monday, 25 June 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

God Bless the 'Chunk.

They're an undeniable classic! The soundtrack to some of the best times of my life. A bunch of good kids who didn't just take the money and run.

I once saw them play at Lee's Palace (Toronto)on Halloween 1999 - it was Jon Wurster's birthday, and I got to meet all of them (except for Mac). They were all lovely and down-to-earth, and even signed my copy of "Incidental Music".

The next morning some friends and I went for brunch, and the restaurant staff (at the Green Room) played "No Pocky For Kitty" from start to finish. Rarely have I enjoyed a meal more.

They've got a reasonable following in Japan as well - or they did as of 5 years ago.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

http://www.spinner.com/2010/04/07/superchunk-new-album/

That should change later this year when the quartet is expected to release a new and still-untitled album through Merge Records, a label formed by singer/guitarist Mac McCaughan and bassist Laura Ballance 21 years ago.
