One of the Fox sportscasters the other week, spotting Rush in the crowd at a Mets game, said something like, "That man is the single greatest genius of radio in my lifetime."

Which might actually be true, really, I don't know.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

RIGHT-WING CONSPIRACY! His listeners helped get him nominated!

xpost how about that! still, such a bad american!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Voltairine de Cleyre's not on there, of course. (No surprise there -- she's not well-known anyway, but she's an anarchist and so most people would obviously hold that against her.) She's a real American, although she'd scoff at the notion of being of a certain nationality -- but to me she symbolises and almost embodies the independent (oh, how I hate this word) "spirit" of America, the liberty and freedom that the country can only aspire to under massive pretenses. If the world were fairer, she'd be a nominee and Rush Limbaugh would have overdosed on prescription drugs in anonymity.

Ian Riese-Moraine forever! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Alphabetically where Miles Davis should be, there's Tom Cruise and Ellen DeGeneres, much greater Americans, like, for sure!

Dr. Souchon: Surgeon-Painter, Monday, 6 June 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

I just voted for Bill Graham! Three times! Accidentally! While trying to see the nominees! This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

I think Lemmy deserves to win

Dan Beale, Monday, 6 June 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

When Canada did this, there were lots of people on the list, in the Top Ten even, who weren't even Canadians, like Adrian Zmed!

Huk-L, Monday, 6 June 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised but wtf is GW doing nominated in the top25?

Richard K (Richard K), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 6 June 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Adrian Zmed! The hell? I knew I should have watched the Greatest Canadian, it sounds entertaining.

Leon hearts Crazy Frog (Ex Leon), Monday, 6 June 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Maybe everyone's interpreting "great" in the sense of "really big," like the Great Wall of China.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

I gave 2 votes to MLK and 1 to Ben. I figure Abe and George can handle their business. Reagan...ffs.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i went all 3 for MLK.

oh, the final tallies will be interesting to see, and to who tries to make political hay out of it...

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

but yeah, as others have said, the vote will be split, and just guess who'll come out on top...

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

How does Rush Limbaugh make the final 100 nominees of that annoying CNN/AOL thing of the Top 25 Greatest Americans who ever lived ?

Because Americans are a very stupid people.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I didn't even look at who was nominated until now. That's a pretty current (as in, 18th & 19th century persons who weren't presidents need not apply) list. Pat Tillman?!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Americans don't love Jesus anymore I guess. He used to be the greatest American, didn't he?

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

The results are so bad it almost makes me wish I was Canadian, but then the greatest Canadian poll was pretty terrible too.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Billy Bush must feel really snubbed, as he's about the only Bush that wasn't nominated for this piece of shit list.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy Carter >>>>>>>> Billy Graham

OK, it's obviously time for me to step away.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Still, Ben Franklin, MLK Jr, Georgie, and Fightin' Abe Lincoln made the top 5, so that wasn't THAT bad.

...

tho i'm SO disappointed that mel gibson didn't win. or that ric flair wasn't nominated.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Meanwhile, on the Food Network, two gay caterers from Chicago beat a black woman to get their own TV show, and Reagan has one hell of an ugly-ass airport named after him.

TOMBOT, Monday, 27 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

How badly did they beat her? Is she OK? Double teaming her wasn't cool.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

trife wuz robbed.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 27 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

buddy of mine was in summer stock theater with william katt for a coupla years.

true story.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

The top ten:

1. Ronald Reagan
2. Abraham Lincoln
3. Martin Luther King
4. George Washington
5. Ben Franklin
6. George W. Bush
7. Bill Clinton
8. Elvis Presley
9. Oprah Winfrey
10. FDR

Dubya beats Bubba beats Elvis beats Oprah.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Somehow the fact that Reagan won doesn't bother me because it just makes the whole thing seem less legit. If he had been two or three (or six) I might have been upset.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm still not gettin' the GWB nomination though... Even if you LOVE him as president, what makes him even close to being one of the greatest americans that ever lived? (Once again, I'm befuddled at people's stupidity. Must learn to let it go.) Also, they should wait until he's dead, just in case he stabs two people and flees in a Bronco or something.
