Didnt he do Boy from Oz before XMen?

I dunno. I like Hugh Jarseman.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 6 June 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

You just like him 'cos he's doing the new aranofsky movie, you big goth tart.

I'm totally totally making all the groomsmen in my wedding wear that leopard monstrosity upthread. Thank you, daerest cutty.

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

I knew that Jackman did Broadway but I had no clue he could fucking SING like that! Holy shit.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

(Christina Applegate, OTOH... Sweetie, you can do the comedic acting thing, you should play to your strengths. Or at least learn to count.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

That outfit is just amazingly horrible, that would be one awesome wedding.

If You Like Wolverine, Clap Your Hands

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

The guy's career STARTED in musical theatre, y'know. I did catch only 30 seconds of his medley plus the "Somewhere" with Aretha (sorry, THAT didn't work), then being the stereotype-defying faggot I am switched back to baseball.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

"Wolverine? I thought you said BEN Vereen."

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I knew he started in Broadway but still! He was very close to being the best singer on stage.

The Aretha thing was... um.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

what do they call the Aussie version of Broadway?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Canberra Row?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

OK does anyone really think this thread is about the validity of Hugh Jackman's singing talent or his initial career starts in musical theatre? It's about "snik snik snarl goes the trolleyyyyyy" and that photo. Seriously, let's just think about that photo for a while.

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

For a while I thought it was a picture of Peter Allen.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

(How intentional is your reference, k/l?)

I like the guy in the audience staring appreciatively through his legs and up his crotch. He's checking the goods out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

HOW CAN YOU NOT LOOK AT IT, HE'S SHAKING HIS ASS, WHILE BELTING A SONG, RIGHT IN THAT MAN'S FACE. Let's be fair here, Ned.

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I never saw Can't Stop The Music, nor did I see your post, Ned, my eyes being transfixed by the images above it.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I grant you this, Ally, but it's more the tone of that dude's look. It's all, "Ah yes, a gold butt and shrink-wrapped package. Nice."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

See, I was playing WoW at the time and not looking at the television. The only things I saw were Christina Applegate falling on her face (CLASSIC!), Aretha Franklin's wig (FRIGHTNING, ergo CLASSIC!), and the spelling bee thing (CLASSIC!). Oh, and homegirl from "Spamalot" was KILLING me!

Hugh Jackman as Your Gay Pimp Daddy was completely missed by mine eyes. UNTIL NOW.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

He doesn't look like a gay pimp. He looks like he raided Michelle Pfeiffer's wardrobe from Married to the Mob.

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Haha! Ally OTM.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

adamantium jazz hands!

kf, Monday, 6 June 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

If I wasn't at work I would search ILM for that thread DB started about the Gay Pimp's "Soccer Practice" video because the biggest differences I remember between the outfit in that video and the outfit HJ is rocking are:

- color (pink vs gold)
- feather boa (present vs missing)

Although the Gay Pimp might have been wearing hotpants, now I don't remember.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

But better Married To the Mob than Scarface.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

http://www.kelvisdelrio.com/images/gaypimp.jpg vs. http://www.sagawards.com/images/images_nom/278_9_DreadeMatteo_lo.jpg

(yes, I know, not exactly what I said but it's all the damn same people)

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I've gone back and properly looked at that HJ picture.

Imagine if Aretha had worn that shirt?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Let's just hope for the sake of that smiling manjack in the audience that he doesn't share her Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
(xpost)

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I don't know Ken, maybe that dude in the audience is smiling so much because he's thinking "It's time for the percolater!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Even though there are no new answers really, I still keep clicking on this thread. That picture is mesmerizing.

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Maybe we get the JW to click on it, and see if it breaks his phone.

Hugh's something like a Dame

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/93376.html

Dumbest bit of this article:

Moving right along, there was also a scattering of genuine Broadway stars who may not be known to an average TV audience these days — Tony winners Chita Rivera, Bernadette Peters, James Earl Jones.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Do you really think JE Jones is a 'name' to the typical multiplex goer?

The homegirl from "Spamalot" is by far the highlight of the 'original' material in the show.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Do you really think JE Jones is a 'name' to the typical multiplex goer?
Um, Dr. Morbius, I know it's not an art film, but have you heard of a little piece of celluloid called Star Wars?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000469/

Yeah, only Broadway people could possibly have any idea who James Earl Jones is.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I like the guy in the audience staring appreciatively through his legs and up his crotch. He's checking the goods out.

Isn't that guy on Queer as Folk? If it is, that explains a lot.

Roz (Roz), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Jones is some deep voiced dude, right?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

And Veriz0n users.
(xxpost)

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Did you hear what Slim Pickens said when he met JE Jones?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

What pct of STAR WARS viewers do you think know who the Darth Vader voice dude is? esp the Prequel Trilogy kids?

I'm glad he lost last night; no point in sullying "The Great White Hope" and "Fences" with On Golden Dross.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

xpost -- "Yeah, but it's not on the menu."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

What pct of STAR WARS viewers do you think know who the Darth Vader voice dude is? esp the Prequel Trilogy kids?

Um, somewhere in the neighborhood of 85-95%? Are you being serious?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

How are you going to pick the ONE piece of Star Wars trivia that everyone knows and be all, "Bah, no one knows this obscure little detail"?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Morbs, you've got to get out and mingle with the riff-raff a little more.

Ned, are you serious? I don't get it.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Neither do I.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

I have mingled with the riff-raff, and they are much less interested in the names of actors than you nerds seem to realize.

I'm just having fun fantasizing about Kathleen Turner being aghast at losing while Bill Irwin won.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Setting aside the whole Star Wars thing, more than just black people saw "Coming To America" and MJ's "Remember The Time" video. Plus dude got a Kennedy honor three years ago, how unknown could he be???

HELLO

ALL PEOPLE, ALL RACES, ALL NATIONALITIES HAVE ALL SEEN VERIZON'S ADVERTISEMENTS

SERIOUSLY

THEY STAR JAMES EARL JONES

YOU MIGHT KNOW HIM FROM HIS WORK IN THE MINOR INDIE HIT, FIELD OF DREAMS

James Earl Jones >>>>> (in terms of "household nameness") Hugh Jackman and we've got a 60 post thread about how totally ridiculous Hugh Jackman is!

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I am going to go down the street. And I am going to ask every single person if they know who James Earl Jones is. The first person I find in Arlington who does not know who James Earl Jones is, I will take a photograph of and post it, to this thread.

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

:-D

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

The original quote in question concerned a contemporary "average TV audience." As the Waco Kid said, "You know ... morons."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

And Ally, don't forget the children. REMEMBER THE CHILDREN!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Exactly what audience watches the Tonys anyway, though?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Artsy women, gays, couch potatoes.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

OK # of people so far who did not know who James Earl Jones was: 0
# of men who asked if I wanted to come "watch some James Earl Jones movies" with them: 1
# of people who initially refused to answer and seemed scared that I was going to, perhaps, sell them to James Earl Jones: 1
# of people who showed me their phones to demonstrate they knew James Earl Jones's advertising contracts, despite the fact that JEJ does not actually do the Verizon Wireless ads: 2

Total # of people asked so far: 9

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I did not ask any children though. I should go to the playground and ask them but I think I might get arrested for sketchiness.

You know, I think you can ask/tell children absolutely ANYTHING and not get in trouble, as long as you do the HOO HAW HOO HAW breathing intermittently.

We have Verizon in Australia now? Cor.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 June 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Actually I recckon I could ask any number of young (read: under 15ys old) kids "who is James Earl Jones?" and I bet at least half of them - even having seen SW - might go "huh?". But if you then said "dude wot does Darh Vaders voice, man!" they'd go "ohhh, right."

He isnt known for much else here, except a few films I think.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 June 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm very dubious about the idea that the target audience for THE TONY AWARDS wouldn't know who Chita Rivera, Bernadette Peters or James Earl Jones is. I mean, seriously.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Dan, there's really no arguing with these people. I don't know why we still try.

"Ethel Merman? The mother-in-law in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? THAT was her name?"

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 9 June 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

The target audience for THE TONY AWARDS are mostly people who have seen between zero and three Broadway shows in their life.

I didn't know Verizon went beyond the Northeast, but I'd bet most ppl who've seen the spots don't know The Man's name.

Update: Ally found most kids under 12 in Arlington were disappointed with "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)
