Molly Ringwald says she likes a script for proposed sequel to Sixteen Candles
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Could it be time to put more candles on the cake?
Molly Ringwald said she’s in discussions to make a sequel to Sixteen Candles, the 1984 movie about the obstacles and embarrassments a teen girl faces on her birthday.
The John Hughes film shot Ringwald to teen stardom but she has not appeared in a major role in many years. She said she’s been appearing in theatre, small TV and film parts and raising a daughter, now 1 1/2.
Ringwald, 37, said she had been approached repeatedly about doing a sequel but recently read a script that she liked and wanted to star in the movie.
“I’ve turned it down for years. I couldn’t see how it would work,” she said Saturday. “Now, it seems right.”
Ringwald was reunited Saturday at the MTV Movie Awards with three fellow The Breakfast Club cast members.
Appearing on stage with her were Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy and Paul Gleason, who played the principal in the 1985 Hughes movie about high school detention. Judd Nelson and Emilio Estevez didn’t show, and Hall joked, “They’re in Africa with Dave Chappelle.”

This is too tragic to even comment on.

'38'????

Anyway, wasn't there already a made-for-tv sequel (not starring Ringwald)?

I do hope they revive the HILARIOUS comedy Chinaman as well, there's just not enough of that sort of thing these days.

I swear I saw this as an April Fool's thing this year. Of course it didn't Chappelle reference attached to it.

I think this is false.

mikef (mfleming), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

WTF do Judd Nelson and Emilo Estevez have to do that was more important than the MTV Movie Awards?

I'm sorry, but this proposition excites me to no end.

Only trouble is, nobody who wasn't sixteen would do this:

And there lay the charm of the whole movie.

Oily bohunk. Holy shit. Lauren, I heart you.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Would John Hughes be involved?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

He's in Africa with Dave Chappelle.

Huk-L, Monday, 6 June 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Your search - oily bohunk - did not match any documents.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Hall apply his oily bohunk to a passed out drunk in the back of a main character's convertible?

And what roll would John Cusack have in all this?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

He would be in Africa with Dave Chappelle.

Huk-L, Monday, 6 June 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

John Cusack would have the crescent roll.

Favorite fleeting exchange in the original:

Babe: "...all i know is I woke in your arms parked in front of our church".

Farmer Ted: "You own a church?"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

No, it was JOAN Cusack who had the great role -- the nerd chick with the HUUUGE headgear. Hahahahahaha.

two years pass...

I just saw 16 Candles for the first time, and it left me with a mystifying question: why did the exchange yell "Banzai!" when he jumped down form the tree? Wasn't he supposed to be Chinese, not Japanese? (Though the actor was clearly of Japanese origin.) Even more mystifying was, were these sort of Asian stereotypes still ok in Hollywood in 1984?

Tuomas, Monday, 14 April 2008 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

"exchange student"

Also, whatever happened to John Hughes? He had very succesful row of movies in the 80s, but he hasn't directed anything since 1991, and these days seems to make his living only by writing scripts for crappy family films.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 April 2008 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Molly Ringwald would have been good in the Cynthia Nixon role on Sex in the City. I wrote my first and only fan letter (other than to Mamet, but that had a script attached) to Molly Ringwald when I was 11 or 12 and she was on The Facts of Life.

Eazy, Monday, 14 April 2008 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently so. They kind of ruined the movie for me when I first saw it in college.

jaymc, Monday, 14 April 2008 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

john hughes withdrew from hollywood and wont tell anyone why - hes a bit of a recluse - there was an article abt this recently ssomewhere

jhøshea, Monday, 14 April 2008 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

he apparently did some writing on Drillbit Taylor (under another name) and the last movie he directed was Curly Sue, so maybe it's best he stay away

akm, Monday, 14 April 2008 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

The Hughes article was in the LA Times a few weeks ago. Sounds like Drillbit was an old treatment of his. In that article, both Apatow and Kevin Smith say that they're basically trying to make John Hughes movieS.

Eazy, Monday, 14 April 2008 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

I heard this on NPR a couple of weeks ago:

yes, clearly the last

I think so. I seem to remember a similar character in Hot Dog! The Movie. Boobies excited him.

the mystifying but obvious answer is yes, these sort of Asian stereotypes, among many others, were 'still ok' in Hollywood in 1984, at least or especially in arguably moronic movies made for and reflecting the mindset of middle-american teenagers. they may also be 'still ok' for people who still enjoy the movie to this day, even if they would never think of deploying or condoning such stereotypes. this might be regarded as 'ironic'. notably, the United States, and its West Coast big cities in particular, unlike most European countries, has many East Asian people among its population.

I am sufficiently unfamiliar with Sixteen Candles to tell you what the character's ancestry was supposed to be, but I do know that the actor was born in Utah, does not speak Japanese, and apparently made something of a career out of portraying "Asian" stereotypes.

Are asian stereotypes still acceptable in Hollywood? Rambo 8 or whatever to thread.

dell, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas, I'd say the majority of Americans in 1984--and today, too, probably--can't differentiate between Chinese and Japanese wrt lots of things. I have a friend who can't even tell which surnames are Chinese and which are Japanese.
