Tell me everything you know - the origin of its name, the people, the history, the history (oh, I've already said that), everything.. the origin of its history.

It was the nickname of William Henry Harrison (ninth president of the United States) -- if I'm not mistaken it came from his victory in a battle there during the War of 1812.

That was completely unexpected, Ned! Was he a gay rapist, too, because he couldn't rap? xpost

Lynda, we've got strange senses of humour around here. Nevermind us. Expect this thread to be hijacked several more times during the course of the day. 500 posts by tomorrow et cetera---

Tippecanoe-Indian (Shawnee, Miami) name for part of Indiana, Harrison fought against and massacred a rebel group led by Tecumsah (who wanted diplomacy) and his brother, The Prophet, a "visionary" who wanted to drive the white influence out of the Midwest and return to pre-white ways and was gathering tribes in a place called Prophetstown. Wm. "Shabazz" Harrison's victory at Prophetstown (now called Battle Ground) earned him the campaign slogan of "Tippecanoe and Tyler too" (Tyler being his running mate) in his winning presidential election. We used to have to camp on the battlefield in Girl Scouts. Creepy.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Ah, right, I think I get it, so when "Tippecanoe" is said out loud now, despite being an Indian name, its connotation is more "anti-Native-American-Harrison"? Does Tippecanoe resonate in much the same way as the phrase "Remember the Alamo"?

Lynda Tose, Monday, 6 June 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

No, it doesn't resonate at all. It's just way more fun to say.

They have a Tippecanoe Mall in Tippecanoe County, IN. And across the street is a strip mall called "Tyler Too".

mikef (mfleming), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)
