I never liked these guys when they were in "the State". Should I expect anything different?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Why do you "never like" things that are AWESOME?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Did you like the movie Wet Hot American Summer? I saw the premiere of this episode and it was pretty similar. I think they're funny though.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

"The State" was completely weak, nabisco. Not as bad as "Mad TV", but damn close.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Stella is vastly overrated, but I've heard from a friend (who is working on the show, for what it's worth) that the show is much better than the State and the shorts). Regardless of how good it is, I bet this is going to be HUGE.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

"Wet Hot American Summer"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Or am I just too old?

well well well what the DOOT is this (deangulberry), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone see The Baxter at the TriBeCa Film Festival? I think these guys are pretty talented/funny, but very lazy--it seems like everything they've done could have been a lot funnier had they worked out some of the weaker ideas. Viva Variety is my favorite project of theirs though, so take this with a grain of salt.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

OK. I am guessing you are NOT going to like this.

And I liked the premiere episode of stella better than the skits I saw -- I got a little tired of all the humping, if that's even possible.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

the pilot recycled some jokes from their skits/dvd, but it was still funny. the audience for this kind of humor seems kind of limited though: campy, faux-gay schtick...

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

The State remains one of my favorite sketch-comedy things ever. I'm glad to see the show's diaspora working consistently, though I haven't necessarily watched loads of what they've done.

Top 5
1. "Sleep with the State" Essay Concept
2. The Barry Lutz Show
3. Louie at the Last Supper
4. Bearded Men of Space Station 11
5. Kabuki Doug

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

State veterans have gone onto "Viva Variety" and "Reno 911", both of which were also unwatchably devoid of laughs. The red-headed guy in "the State" actually bartended at a wedding I went to a couple of years ago. "Aren't you in 'The State'?" I asked, five beers after I first got the hunch. "Yeah," he sighed, not thrilled with the admission.

To his credit, Michael Ian Black has had his funny moments on all those "I Love the 80's" shows on Vh1.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

dude Alex his VH1 shit is so one-note. how can you act all huffy about their other work while digging droll irony 101?

miccio (miccio), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

are they SUPPOSED to look like a nu-wave band in that shot?

miccio (miccio), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

"alternative comedy" = devoid of laughs.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

dude Alex his VH1 shit is so one-note. how can you act all huffy about their other work while digging droll irony 101?

That one note is occaissionally funny (notice I said "funny moments").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

alex, you think reno 911 is devoid of laughs? you didn't think the state is funny? why do you even give a shit about stella then?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I dunno man acting humorless about Wet Hot American Summer and reno 911 while giving VH1 talking heads their due? Loopy.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

actually, alex, PLEASE don't watch this show. thanks.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

alex, you think reno 911 is devoid of laughs? you didn't think the state is funny? why do you even give a shit about stella then?

Because I have hope in my heart that things will work out well for them.

And Antoine, I was giving Michael Ian Black -- an ACTIVE MEMBER of "the State" and "Stella" (and a bit player in "Ed") his due. That it happned to air on Vh1 is incidental. I have no reason to suspect that the opinions he states on those shows are not his own. Thus, I am saying: he is capable of being funny. That said, I never found much to laugh at on "The State".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

that being said, you won't find much to laugh at on stella, either.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 6 June 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

ONE LINER ALERT: The only thing MIB is due for his VH1 work is a punch in the balls!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

State veterans have gone onto "Viva Variety" and "Reno 911", both of which were also unwatchably devoid of laughs.

Okay, "Reno 911" is best described by any adjective that is the direct antonym of "devoid of laughs". Have you seen more than two seconds of the show?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

The two seconds of it I've seen were a little too antic but otherwise pretty hilarious: a woman called the police complaining that her boyfriend had done something to her weave.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, though, I find pretty much all comedy these days way way way too antic. I don't know when this idea developed that lots of hammy/screamy action is necessarily funny.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

i was hoping this would be a sitcom based on "a streetcar named desire"

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I was in "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" with one of the guys who later founded "The State," when I was like 11 years old. I heard later that he "went to New York and became a punk."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Reno 911 is fucking awesome!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, "Reno 911!" is SO MUCH MORE than hammy/screamy action! There was this outstanding episode where a former con turned born-again preacher came back to the precinct (whom he credited with introducing him to God) in order to tape a special from-jail episode of his televangelist program that was outlandishly hysterical on every level. High points included auditioning guys in a line-up (the most tuneful/attractive one got picked for arrest), people committing really asinine crimes to get on television, and the whole department crowding into a cell to get on the dude's show, at which point he locked them in and stole all of their personal shit from their lockers. Way too classic.

I love Reno 911! I love all the random people, like the lady who was dragging the WATER HEATER around.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

The Reno 911 second season DVDs come out in a week and Amazon just dropped the first season price to $16.

i don't know anymore (deangulberry), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Alex,

Please stop posing.

Thanks.

I've been accused of many a misdeed in my day, but this one I don't get. By expressing my disdain for "The State," how does that make me a poser?

Unless, of course, you meant to type: "Alex, Please stop posting, Thanks".

...in which case, the answer is: IN YOUR DREAMS, BITCH!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

alex, you think reno 911 is devoid of laughs? you didn't think the state is funny? why do you even give a shit about stella then?

I was reiterating Cutty's point (above). I don't see why you are anticipating something that you're clearly not interested in ... and so I'm going to start a thread about how I am anticipating new material from Killing Joke.

i don't know anymore (deangulberry), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

i like the state sketch where, for every question you get right on the game show, you are legally obligated to adopt an orphan... also the fact that louie had a pair of golf balls that he would hold in the air every time he said his catchphrase.... didn't thomas lennon co-write taxi and herbie fully loaded?? argh

dave k, Monday, 6 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Do you really think I'm that closed-minded? Like I said, I don't think these guys are entirely devoid of talent -- and their projects keep getting green lit -- I mean, maybe I'm missing something. Hence the thread.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

and so I'm going to start a thread about how I am anticipating new material from Killing Joke.

Oh, and as well you should.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

"The State" was completely weak, nabisco. Not as bad as "Mad TV", but damn close.

Probably the most insulting thing I've ever read on ILX, because The State is my favorite show ever, and Mad TV is probably the worst horseshit on TV that claims to be "comedy."

Try to make it clear in the thread title if you're just going to make an announcement that you hate something, so that people who enjoy can have their own thread.

State veterans have gone onto "Viva Variety" and "Reno 911", both of which were also unwatchably devoid of laughs.

Shut up.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

are they SUPPOSED to look like a nu-wave band in that shot?

I would say yes, there's a good chance of it.

It was so nice 5 years ago when no one knew what Stella was, and I didn't have to hear from people who "don't get it." And as much as I want the show to be successful, I know that most of its biggest fans are going to be complete losers, and that it will be hated by just as many people as those who love it.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

alex this is hardly the first time someone's pointed out you're incurious - don't act so suprised! some people don't like hardboiled eggs, some people write lefthanded, some people are deeply incurious - this last one's you. don't fight it! ain't no thing but a chicken wing bra!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

and people have different senses of humour - who knew? some people "get" this generation's humour, some people prefer when harry met sally. to each his own! life is a highway dude!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

as someone who has seen their live show three times in the space of one year, i am anticipating the FUCK out of this show. i've actually not seen a single episode of the state (god willing, if they ever get around to putting out that dvd set they've been threatening to, i'll get my chance) (who do i mean by they?!?!), but viva variety was occasionally charming and i think reno 911! is totally underrated. plus: david wain dancing is pretty much the funniest thing on the planet.

joseph (joseph), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

and i saw a clip of what i think might be the pilot episode at one of those three shows (it involved apartment hunting) and it was very, very funny.

also i know every line from wet hot american summer like the back of my hand.

joseph (joseph), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm fine with Alex or anyone else being closed-minded or incurious - I just wish more of them didn't have to express their opinions so loudly.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

i wonder though if the dildos so beloved of stella in their online sketches will feature prominently, if at all, on this show. what's the FCC's position on realistic-looking sex toys on cable shows after 10?

joseph (joseph), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

There are only so many BOLDED CAPITAL LETTERS in this world.

i don't know anymore (deangulberry), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Reno 911 is very spotty; you can tell most of it is improvised. Dangle, though, is a character who doesn't even really have to say any outright funny lines to make me laugh. I think I could put it on mute and laugh at him.

oops (Oops), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

Funny revive: I just walked, like, four blocks right next to Showalter this morning. Combined with walking past Sean Lennon last night, it's like some kind of "celebrities whose moms I like" festival.

nabisco, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

Whoa whoa, Michael Showalter's mom is Elaine Showalter?!?!

jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

YES!!

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

I was sad when they yanked this show.

dell, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

Weird. I don't know if I've actually read anything of hers, but I saw her speak at the MLA in 1999!

jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

I was totally unaware of it when it was on tv, but the dvd is awesome.

Jordan, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

I read some of her stuff in college. I only found out she was his mom because it was mentioned in a New York Times article this weekend.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, nabisco, there was a week years back when I saw Sean walking around with his Cibo Matto girlfriend near Houston and Sixth, and then a few days later I was walking across Central Park when I heard some people talking behind me and one of them was his mom. The strangest thing was that the first thing I heard was some Max von Sydow type guy going on about "101 Dalmations" - "You LOVE dogs and therefore you humanize them!" before I heard tsomebody respond in that trademark whispery baby doll Yoko voice. I hung fire to let them pass and indeed it was her. Still not sure about Max.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

I think I saw Sean at Dazzle Ships or just at normal Heathers once.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

He looks more and more like John as he ages -- there's like 100% nose resemblance at this point. It probably didn't hurt that he was wearing an outfit that looked like he grabbed it from a closet marked "Let It Be / Amish Era," hat included.

Anyway, yeah, I checked on whether the Showalters were related a long time ago, because "Showalter" is one of those rare-ish names that I only see in hardcore clusters among ... Indiana Mennonites, Ohio Mennonites, and I guess some kind of Pennsylvania "Dutch" descendants? It's right up there with "Yoder."

nabisco, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

Yoder is one of the whitest names in America, I recently learned.

jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, *the* whitest. 98.1% of Yoders are white.

jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

There some kind of bad "Why doesn't Yoders people ever want to...?" joke coming.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

I guess that's just for names already in the top 1000. Overall, Yoder is like 3,800th whitest, and Showalter is 18,000th whitest (out of 65,500 total). Yes, I looked into this, because I'm jaymc.

jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

evidently Sean bought a bunch of DVDs at our store years back (he was performing at a nearby theatre) and tried to return them a few hours later and was pissed off that the clerk wouldn't give him a cash refund, just store credit. I think he pulled some "do you know who I am" shit, which is kinda stupid when people know you're John Lennon's heir.

da croupier, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

Did something actually use the word "heir"?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

"I'm John Lennon's heir, by-atch!"

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

who only knows, the woman that waited on him is crazy and I just wish I could have seen them square off. I'm surprised she didn't tell him to give peace a chance or something.

da croupier, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

on subject, I'm kinda embarassed I've only seen two episodes of this show (loved the pilot, didn't get into the second).

da croupier, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

Michael Showalter's stand up cd totally sucks. The Baxter does too. Im starting to think he totally sucks.

chaki, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

yes, he does

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

I've enjoyed him in wainier contexts, but he's definitely not to be trusted.

da croupier, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

really wanted to like this show, watched it twice and hated it.

John Justen, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

Showalter was pretty mean to me recently as well but Im not letting that get in the way of my opinion of him which was pretty high until i actually started thinking about his work.

chaki, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

I saw him live a couple months ago and he was great, but yeah, the cd kinda sucks.

The only thing that made me lol is during one of those New Yorker-y travel narratives: "My big dick accidentally slipped into her vagina. Aaaand we began buttfucking."

Jordan, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

pretty hacky, that line.

chaki, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

it's totally dumb but it made me laugh.

Jordan, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway I think he's probably better on other people's projects than when he's running the show.

Jordan, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

As I recall, the show started out kinda "meh", but got better a few episodes along.

dell, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

the "Stella Shorts" dvd is great great great. The only great episode of the tv show is the one where they rap with all those paperboys.

chaki, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

He comes off pretty dicky in his recent lengthy Onion A/V club interview. I thought "The Baxter" was sort of nice. Love "Wet Hot American Summer." I mostly just wish I had seen Shudder to Think last night, though.

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 7 February 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)
