I do the latter because I am the hipster police weeding out the posers from the real players! Like me!

Chicago has done things to your MIND.

"MIND."

You like Avril, Dave. Consider yourself SILENCED!

Leeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

No no no - I like Xtina. Avril's kinda meh. Gimme Skye Sweetnam, brah.

I read this as basing you CONTRACEPTION on others' tastes...

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

This is easy: if you like them, they get praised for their best tastes, if you dislike them they get condemned mercilessly for their worst tastes. Otherwise we'd have to judge other people's tastes fairly, and that's obviously not on.

im so guilty of the latter. martin is pretty much right OTM.

I don't know, Martin, I find the oppposite. If I really like someone, the crap things they like take on an endearing quality. If I don't like someone, the cool things they like lose their sheen for me.

I refuse to give Antony and the Johnsons (am I saying the right name?) a chance, just because someone I really, really don't like is really into them.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

I've been having this discussion a lot lately.. It's not what people don't like so much as how they feel about not liking it. "Oh - I hated that movie, I just didn't get it. It was so stupid." -vs- "I saw that movie, but I didn't follow it." ... being contemptuous of the things you hate and/or being proud of your ignorance - that has become my new litmus test (willingness to experience new things) instead of having experienced the same things that I have.

my stance is sort of similar to accentmonkey. i will be put off something i might otherwise like if someone i hate is into it, whereas i'll go out of my way to get into/understand music my girlfriend likes when i wouldn't give those bands a second thought otherwise..
