My friend J went to teach in Japan (8-9 year olds). He was given a tape of a song to play by way of an introduction, and was told that they all knew the words and little movements that went with the song. He walked into the classroom and put the tape on, LOUD, waiting for the cute kids to begin their routine in perfectly blissful, synchronous beauty...and they just sat there in silence, glowering at him.

This is currently my reality. All I can say is someone needs to get these kids some hooked on phonics, soon.
