God I hate Julie Birchill. But I always fancied the redhead from Girls In Love. So is this going to be any good?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know what the song is they're using on the trailer?

bert (bert), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

i had a quick look just now, but only because they used "teen angst" by M83 on the trailer. for the theme tune, it's been replaced by that godawful blondie song "one way or another". which i refused to believe was by blondie, thus earning myself many humiliation points at the hands of mrs fiendish. bugger. i hate this programme already.

still waiting on an e-mail from you, dom ;)

x-post: ooh, handy.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

right, so we haven't heard THAT blondie track much recently, certainly not in a recent TEEN COMEDY.

n_RQ, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

THE FADERS SHE WAS WANKING AND THEY PLAYED THE FADERS NO SLEEP TONIGHT! SEE! SEE! SHE WON'T BE SLEEPING 'COS SHE IS WANKING!!!! JULIE BURCHIL PWNS TV!!!!!

elwisty (elwisty), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Yes Si... can you hold on that e-mail until I get back to college on Monday? I've gotta go through "appropriate channels" and all that shite, but you knows I appreciate it.

This show is like a cross between Blossom and the Carry On films, with added SEXY SEX ACTION WITH SEX for the C4 audience.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

BUT THE FADERS!!! DOM THE FADERS!!!!

elwisty (elwisty), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

too busy laughing at this to type properly ... yes, dom, that's fine, no worries. just didn't want you to have fallen foul of teh SPAMTRAP of DOOM, as does every fucker's copy every single week.

but e-mails from my dad calling people "cunts" still come through fine.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

The Faders are yesterday's news, nowadays we're all listening to that filter house "Owner of a Lonely Heart" remix.

Listening to this soundtrack, Julie Birchill makes the worst mixtapes in history. You know, to go alongside her worst newspaper columns in history.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Is this why women go to the toilet together? So they can trace their feet on the walls?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

TEN EPISODES

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

oh, it's ended, with THE FADERS!!!

elwisty (elwisty), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

It was rubbish. Is anyone turning over to E4 to continue the horror?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

"There's no toad, it's just hole. I thought you might be off the meat"

JULIE BIRCHILL PWNS HETEROSEXUALITY.

Wow, this may be worse than Celebrity Love Island/Scrubs.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

I liked the subtle message given by the "one in ten men is impotent" ad on straight after. Lez up, kids!

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Plotlines for later in the series:

Sugar eats a kebab
Sugar eats a muffin
Sugar tries to play tiddlywinks, but doesn't have any, so substitutes stuff from her clothing drawer and literally "flicks" a "button"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Brilliant! Really, really excellent, funny and enjoyable programme.

dm, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what this show is about. Can someone sum it up in a sentence?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Slightly geeky 16-year-old (played by the redhead from Girls In Love) has crush on her best friend, who is wild, rebellious, and a coloured.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Faders fan uses electric toothbrush as masturbation aid.

I only saw the begining and the end.

elwisty (elwisty), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I gave up halfway, utter rubbish.

Did anybody else think the girl that played Sugar looked facially very like Billie Piper?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

oh BOLLOCKS, I missed this! I'd been looking forward to it for ages. I heart the Burchill, though it doesn't surprise me at all that Dom hates her.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

and from all these comments it sounds like it was fantastic, too.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

It was brilliant, obviously, it was on too late though. It should be put on in the post-school slot - sex and all!

dm, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

i used to like la burch before she thought that killing thousands of iraqi kids was the one true road to socialism.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

So to the people who liked it - why was it great?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

a bit like hollyoaks, but much less subtle.

(that's not an answer to steve's question.)

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Nothing amazing, only watched it because it was on after BB, but I did switch over to ep.2 on E4 (and then promptly fell asleep). Wonder how this will affect electric toothbrush sales in the next month? Wonder which 15-year-olds actually dress like that?

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

it really was atrocious in the same way that hollyoaks is. i watched it specifically to get annoyed, so in a way it delivered exactly what i wanted. it was so heavy-handed, crass and utterly self-regarding that i would have guessed it was a burchill thing even if i hadn't known - especially when she said "we moved to brighton - sin city". newsflash: brighton is pretty nice on the whole and rather twee!

stelfox, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

i typed the hollyoaks thing b4 i saw lauren's post - great minds...

stelfox, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

I can't abide Hollyoaks so i'd better steer clear of this I suppose.

Mind you Mile High is back on Sky One tonight (or was it last night?).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

there's a character called jesus. that's gee-zus, not hay-zeus. oh, the possibilities...

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

the reason for said character's name: his mum was a catholic.
obviously that is why my middle name is "father son and holy spirit".

stelfox, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

to be fair the "brighton: sin city" line was intended as a rather obvious joke - hence the shots of bus stops/ old ladies walking down the front, that accomplanied it. i managed 10 minutes of this, spectacularly awful - i cannot believe there are 10 episodes of this guff.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

10 episodes!?!?! even those bbc1 things, 'war and peace' or what have you, are shorter than that. 'the rotter's club' could have done with more than three. how unfair.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

is it better than Metrosexuality then?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

according to Tom upthread.

xp

yes, a little.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

I may have dreamed that but I'm sure I read it in the Guardian.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Can anyone explain why the nice red-haired girl was friends with the awful slapper - apart from the fact that she fancied her? Just didn't ring true at all. This was like a not very good children's TV drama.

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Was the Rotters Club the one on BBC2 set in the 70s? That was wicked.

This was...I dunno, 'cause I missed it.

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

that's the one, yeah. in fact it had a joke about julie burchill in it.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
This is slightly better than Metrosexuality.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

That's the best damning-with-faint-praise statement that I've heard for ages.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

This is still on television. Why?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

the girl sugar, is fucking hot

um, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

the show is easily the equal of Hollyoaks.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

It is very bad, in particular the character of the main girl's dad, who is transparently the (increasingly outdated) middle-class liberal strawman that Burchill has been railing against for far too long.

Richard Littlejohn's written a novel, maybe Channel 4 could adapt that next?

Flyboy (Flyboy), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

This show makes me miss As If!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

To be honest, what doesn't make you miss As If?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

I didn't even like As If that much.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

i liked early 'as if' before it moved to the weekend, after which i never saw it.

i can't believe this is still on, but the girl really is 'our' lindsay lohan.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

still 4 more thrilling episodes, nrq!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

STILL THREE MORE EPISODES TO GO!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I bet the last episode will be set IN SPACE.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

i loved tonight's father-son chat...

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

anyone know what that music they were playing right at the end was? i could hear it from the other room and it sounded top.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

julie burchill has been boasting that she wrote the entire shooting script for this in 2 afternoons.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

I love Julie Burchill but this isn't so hot. Tone it down a bit though and it would make a really good post-school programme - the story won't seem as old hat to younger viewers and there's some really good, funny lines in it. I wouldn't mind reading Burchill's original novel and see how it differs from this TV version which has been adapted by someone else.
It's beating Hollyoaks in the ratings as well, which isn't bad considering the time slot. It's obviously benifited from being immediately post-Big Brother, but it's a reasonable hit, it's in Ch4's top ten.

David Merryweather Goes To Far (scarlet), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm just glad somebody's had the guts to take aim at organised religion in a Channel TV show for once.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm just glad somebody's had the guts to take aim at organised religion in a Channel 4 TV show for once.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Whoops.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

I missed last night's episode. I know I didn't actually miss anything, but what happened?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

there was kissing!

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Uh huh, and....

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

I am proofreading episode 3 now. One line stands out - "Fucking hell. A virgin with an STD." I told you my job was GRATE.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

nighttime ejaculation!

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

I see, all the fun without the work!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

So, er, this Faders track which bookends ep 1 - does it go "Yeah, yeah, yeah! I say yeah, yeah, yeah!"? Cos the online lyrics I've looked at suggest it doesn't. So either they can't get the rights for that tune for DVD release or I'm just confused.

Peter & I are feeling very old trying to identify these music cues. It's all very Young People's.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

I only had Blondie, which was a great comfort.

My episode was all about pubic lice AKA muff nits.

Very short episodes. Too many shot changes, court composer.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

still going!

N_RQ, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

I also saw the last episode, but I can't remember what happens so I can't spoil it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry PJ, Julie Burchill beat you to it.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

Haha!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

final ep ce soir. 7 june seems a looong time ago.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

last on E4 or last on terrestrial?

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

can you believe it?

there's another series!!!

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

but it does mean we can fancy Olivia Hallinan with less guilt now.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

is she the slightly lohanny one?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

sure why not

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

NEW SERIES OF SUGAR RUSH! TAKE THAT EMASCULATED MEN! ALL NEW HOT LEZZZBIAN ACTION TO A SOUNDTRACK OF SONGZ RELEASED THREE YEARS AGO. HOW DOES THAT SHOCK YOUR BOURGEISE LIBERAL WORLD UP? BLACK PEOPLE ARE COOL BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL CRIMINALS.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

"la la la with all these things that i've done..."

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

olivia was born 20 January 1984, so i'm not feeling *terribly* guilty about digging a 22-year-old!

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah it's the actress, not the character. i used that one re the 'Sabrina' debacle.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

guess how old kate in 'lost' is, in 'real life'.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

47?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

got it in one.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

i'm just sayin, though.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

does anyone know what song was playing just before the end credits last night? sort of old skool soul, but coulda been a new track, girl singer, really weird and wonderful chord changes... anyone? bueller? bueller?

i am not a nugget (stevie), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

not sure what it was but i did notice that it was the identical tune to somehting i have (but can't bring to mind, 'double barrel' maybe) but with a completely different vocal track (female instead of male, different lyrics).

wasn't julie burchill writing, but she got a 'based on characters by' credit.

koogy wonderland (koogs), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:36 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like "Take me over" by oh what was it....

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

McKay.

There you go. Why was that not a big hit? Everyone loved it.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

SUgar Rush is exactly like a CBBC drama but with lessin'. Its quite a nice brain-down at the end of the evening.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

mCKay! i have that album somewhere.... i thought i recognised it! tq mark!

i am not a nugget (stevie), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

My new gal bumped into a friend of mine who said to her "You look like that girl in the Sugar Rush show - you know the lesbian one? There's a black girl who's well hot and there's the other one who looks like you who's... nice but more the type of person you'd wanna have a relationship with".

He was pissed - wasn't sure if he was trying to chat her up or trying to insult her. She was veering toward the latter. Hargh!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.b3tards.com/uploads/juliebiog.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

The worst thing about Sugar Rush is the endless shots of the BRIGHTON PIER sign, just in case, y'know, you forget where the show is set.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

nine months pass...

lol

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

i overheard this woman bigging up 'sugar rush' to her bloke, on the street. somebody likes it.
