Sexy voices

What makes a voice sexy? In your opinion, who has a sexy voice? Is a sexy voice sexier than a sexy look?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't seem to have anything to do with looks - there's a girl who works downstairs who despite not being anything special re looks, has the world's most amazingly sexy voice. But what MAKES it sexy, I'm not sure. I would imagine it's tone+timbre+accent?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

I used to talk with a woman from another office quite a lot and I always thought she sounds amazing, I bet she’s gorgeous I always thought. We used to flirt a little & joke around. About 8 months after 1st speaking to her a woman came into the office asked where I was, and introduced herself. Not what I had pictured is the nicest way to put it.

Makes me sound shallow, but I ain’t.

Mariella Frostrup has a sexy voice.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Mariella Frostrup has a sexy voice

totally agree, and i was trying to think of her name for ages. thanks

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

For me a sexy woman’s voice has to a little husky with a smooth overtone. Does that make sense?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

a husky, breathy tone can make someone sound like he/she's exhausted having just had sex - thus sexy.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

(x-post) I have a very similar story - loads of phone flirting, then the guy comes up to my office and I never fancied him ever again.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Charlotte Green's voice.

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

All women named Charlotte.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Mariella Frostrup sounds like a man, so if you fancy her voice you are teh gay.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

Charlotte Church?

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

Charlotte Rampling!

C J (C J), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

yes Mads.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

A nice accent helps too. For some reason I'm rather partial to women with geordie accents (they sounds filthy)...and the very plummy jolly-hockey-sticks English accent works for me too.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

carrie fisher great voice. mmmmmmm

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Deep, boyish, dorky voices.
Crackly smoked-out but not too haggard/elderly sounding voices.
Peppy, enthusiastic, slightly nervous A.D.D. styles voices.

"Sexy" voices are the first step in getting yourself shot. Don't you know pussy kills, Javier?

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Examples:

1. Stephanie from Letterman, she sounds adorably retarded (in that totally brilliant way).
2. That girl I told you about, the one that wanted to invent the Cocaine Camelbak.
3. Anne Heche in her alien vision period.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

Any female newsreader or reporter, especially Andrea Catherwood, Felicity Barr & Katie Derham . I have such a soft spot for them.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Sexiest celeb voice EVAH belonged to Audrey Hepburn, surely? Although a hundred times yes for Charlotte Green. Posh English accents make me swoon, as do es Welsh, strangely.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

IRL voices that I like though seem to have a bit of a hair lip. Not much, but just enough for it to be noticable. How odd.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Posh English accents make me swoon

How come no-one's ever said that to me (outside America, anyway)?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

What sort of voice do you ladies like?

Does James Earl Jones' do it for you?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Posh English accents make me swoon
Weird Science was on telly the other night. I'd forgotten how much Kelly Le Brock saying 'I'll kick your arse' did it for me when I was a lad.

French accents hit the spot too.

Please note that by finding French accents attractive I am not advocating forcing all women into watching 'Allo 'Allo in order to conform to my fascist voice attractiveness standards. I would never walk up to someone in the street and ridicule them for having the wrong accent, but I reserve the right to criticise Julia Roberts' accent in Mary Reilly as she puts herself in the firing line with her celebrity voice status.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

'good moaning'

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Fi Glover, Eddie Mair [it must be in the Broadcasting House presenter rules or something], anyone Scottish and male, anyone French and female.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Also Janeane Garofalo and anyone with that kind of wry, sarcastic thing going on.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Archel is right. A nice Scottish accent is the business. Of course by "nice Scottish accent" I do NOT mean Sean bloody Connery. I was thinking more of Ewan McGregor.

George Clooney has a sexy voice.

I'm trying to think of someone whose voice alone I find sexy, but it's difficult.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

I love soft/coy/coquettish-sounding voices, like Clare Grogan when she was in Gregory's Girl, young Marianne Faithfull, or Melanie Lynskey in half of her roles.

Julie Delpy's voice has this underlying hint of sultriness (partially stemming from her background) that's just -- gah! -- in a wonderful way. She could seduce me with conversation alone. It's difficult to appropriately explain but she's got this tone of voice, the way she says things that seem conversational and yet subtly sensual and it just works on me.

I also like voices that sound like they could rip my head off, like Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses, Vanessa Briscoe of Pylon, or Marianne Faithfull at middle age. Could my weirdness be anymore apparent now?

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

sometimes i think if the girl is attractive, that somehow makes the voice sexy by default.

blahbariantheoriginal, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Kristin Hersh has a lovely speaking voice too - a dusty hint of Georgia drawl barely containing the raspy laugh underneath.

Archel is OTM about Garofolo too.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Marge Simpson?

And Tom Waits. I would never sleep with the man but the voice... all that whiskey-drenched gruffness, me like.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

'Fraaaan?'

Alix with an i ? (alix), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I like Bud Cort's voice, it's so dreamy. And Peter Sarsgaard has a good voice (sorta Malkovich-esque but not as flamery). I think a hottt voice totally make an average guy HOT SUPREME.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

number 1 sexy voice - william shatner post-2000

janeane garofolo? c'mon

hey whats up with that girl who "reports" on american idol and she used to be on "good day live" a lot. i guess shes simon cowells girlfriend. the first time i heard her i thought she was on the verge of losing her voice altogether then realised later that she ALWAYS sounds like that. who gets a job in broadcasting with a voice that sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard?

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Kathleen Turner

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Kathleen Turner, good one.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

(Mandee would've been one of my choices, but that would've be Overstepping The Mark. And I ain't no Mark Overstepper. Though I did go to school with him. Why have you reverted to Homosexual II?)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, should I be Homosexual III now?

Thanks, though, Mike Ain't-No-Overstepper! Did you really go to school with Mark Overstepper?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

When I was around 15 I had the sexiest voice ever. I don't know what happened to it. One time this woman called with a wrong number, and I told her so, and she hung up, and then two minutes later she called back to tell me I had a sexy voice and ask if I was single.

I'm starting to think diction and enunciation are pretty central to voice-sexiness. Not any particularly qualities of diction and enunciation, just the general effect.

nabiscothingy, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I thought of another one: non-Italian people speaking Italian (well). Yum!

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Did you really go to school with Mark Overstepper?

Yeah, he went out with Lily Gilding.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm partial to Finnish voices, men and women, actually. I like to hear Finnish spoken in low tones, preferably a whisper, in my ear, late a night. I miss that.

Christine Amanpour anyone?

I've been accused of having a sexy voice. Doing radio for eight years, late-night variety, I got my fair share of phone calls asking me to speak a little longer between sets. Most of those were from late-night security guards, but I took what I could get. I'm a tart that way.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Anne Bancroft
Pink (the singer, not the ilxor)
Luna (the ilxor, not the group)
BEYONCE omg

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Getting off to the sound of someone's voice -- classic or dud?

I've been told I have a sexy voice -- it's soft and polite and has a British affectation that came from listening to Anglophilic grooviness galore and now I can't get it out.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Anne Bancroft

RIP...

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

That dude who was in CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN SUBURBIA and a couple seasons of Angel.

My voice is sexy if it's hot when a voice is 10,000 leagues under the sea DEEP. I think not.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

You know you have a sexy voice Luna. That ! is purest affectation.

(Luna did one of those late night chatline ads "Hi...are you lonely? Do you need someone to talk to?")

Don't front now.

Ash (ashbyman), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I ain't frontin'... okay, I am, but I still don't believe it. To me, I sound like Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

You know, the little John Denver lookin' kid.

"no cover, no minimum"

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

No it was a voiceover for a low budget tv commercial for what turned out to be a phone sex hotline. In CO. In 1992.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

i've been told i have a nice voice, but i'm not certain that nice equals sexy

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

"turned out to be"?? like you didn't know?! oh aimee, you're so naive.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know and shut up or I'll mail you a kick to the nuts.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I feel that I must point out that Ash sounds hot as fuck. Not just fuck, but FUCK.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

It's true, I sound just like Billy Dee Williams.

(No I don't)

Ash (ashbyman), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Charlotte Rampling! OTM

Jeanne Moreau

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

You sound like hot.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Chicks with medium to low, vaguely scratchy voices, and a hint of mischief.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Hey thanks! Wait, I'm not a chick.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Like you, J. For reals.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Shane on the L Word has a very hot androgyny voice thing going on. J0an J3tt, too.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

ow I need to make a list of ilxors I've spoken to who sound hot:

All of them. No, really.

Jeanne definitely does, so does Mandee (okay that was a voicemail, but still), Kenan does, Ally does, Tom does, Spencer does, Chaki does, Oops does, everyone who called me from NY on my birthday, and more people that I am forgetting. um.. yeah. All of you, you magnificent bastards.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I sounded hot? Surely I sounded drunk.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Drunkenly hot, my friend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes you did. Believe it.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I felt special for about 38 seconds there...

Ash (ashbyman), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Joan Jett - good call. Also, Eleanor Friedberger.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

that's 38 seconds more than middle-of-the-list me!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Okay, you all suck, is that what you want to hear? FUCK ME.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

is that an outake from your phone sex ad?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Hey oops, when you get a package in the mail from me next week, open it right at about crotch height, okay?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

yessssss

http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/prodimages/200/PVFL.jpg

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

that's how i open all my packages.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Kenan, you broke my brane.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

"I Opened the Package"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, Ned. That was truly irritating.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

That dude does not have a sexy voice.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Like the dude says, "It's not my JOB to be sexy!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

No but this thread is about sexy...

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

But he saw a sexy woman!

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

With a little blue razor.

Was that song "ironic"? Or was it a desperate plea by someone to be punched in the cock?

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Anyway to answer the thread question: I'm not sure if there's any one particular voice I find sexy, but there are certain traits I tend to like and dislike.

Like: voices that sound like they're not trying to be sexy, kind of casual, maybe a bit of a drawl, not too high in register, maybe even a hint of gruffness

Dislike: very high pitched squeaky voices, the exaggerated toothy "s" sound that you hear in sort of stereotypical sorority voices, Betty Boop voices

I'm not sure if I'd say that a sexy voice is sexier than a sexy look, but a sexy voice can definitely increase the sexiness factor of a woman, and an unsexy voice will definitely lower it.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

No, it was a desperate plea to be rammed up the ass by a big black dude, homosexual mass! xpost

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Lucy Davis from Shaun of the Dead! A voice I didn't really notice until the extra on the DVD answering the question, "what happened to Dianne when she left the Winchester?" That accent makes me man-wet.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

I love Kelly MacDonald's voice/accent and Daniella Nardini's. I have a weakness for the Scots accent.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Me too.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

I suddenly can't remember a single ILXor's voice

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

OMG, voice is SO important to sexy. It doesn't have to be a particular stereotype, but someone's voice has to *strike* me.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

I don't know about voice, but command of language is certainly key.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Kristin Scott-Thomas: her voice makes me a weak mortal.
