TOMBOT, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

ooh I'll be keeping my eye on this thread, I'm thinking of taking a cruise in the not too distant future.

The wife and I spent our honeymoon cruising around the Mediterrenean (sp?) on the Q.E.II. It was filled with old people, but we weren't interested in meeting anyone anyway (nudge, nudge). Apart from the octagenarian factor, it was awesome.

I think the Q.E.II has since been retired, but the Cunard line (who oversaw her) has a bunch of other similarly inclined vessels.

its awful---boring and entrapping, and banal, and the food isnt nearly as good as imagined, and there is no one to have a decent convo with, and fucking hell was it the worst vacation i ever had.

The impression I get is that it's "Butlins on sea".

So yeah, like, talk about shore excursions. Jamaica in particular, cuz, like, we're going there.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

You have to wear gold or silver shoes.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I found our cruise incredibly restful (especially post-wedding silliness). If anything, the days at sea were the best. Your opetions are gloriously limited (ahhh, should I simply read my book on deck and stare out at the vast expanse of ocean, or should I go get a massage? Ooooh, what time is dinner? Time for another drink, then!)

And the food was magnificent.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I would do this just for the food, but someone would have to guarantee me it would be fantastic.

My parents just did a cruise to Eastern/Central Europe -- the excursions were Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary. They booked it through a company called Grand Circle Travel.

I would like to go on a cruise to Tallinn.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Make that St Peterburg.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I'll go anywhere if someone else is paying!

metal assembly (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

a cruise seems like one of those things that you definitely don't want to do on a budget. otherwise you'll get a closet-sized bedroom next to the engine room and you'll have like hotdog stew for dinner. and they'll only have st. ides at the bar!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

our cruise to alaska was awesome. coldish for summertime... but to sit near a window with some coffee and just watch... that was nice.

and hey... to see glacier national park while there's still a glacier to see! amazing!

the food! god, the food!

i cant imagine the food in cruise ships to be all that amazing. i mean how good can dinner be when they're like making it for 800 people?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

like at weddings. ive ever been to one where the food was much better than "not bad"

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

yes, but there's so much of it. < /my parents>

metal assembly (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Cruises are an awful waste of time and money.

you better believe it (you better believe it), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I went on one with my extended family. The food was not amazing, though I am a vegetarian, so my options were pretty limited. I did have a very tasty portobello at dinner one night. Mostly it was dull, I read a lot, gambled a little, drank by the pool, saw some extremely kitschy song and dance performances, and napped. Take some dramamine.

"i cant imagine the food in cruise ships to be all that amazing."

better than any chain or the usual tourist trap nastiness you typically get on a vacation though.

what do i know tho? more than one fork = fine dining, right?

n/a is otm about it basically being sort of boring... but that's kind of the point i think... relaxation on a large moving object with as few responsibilities as possible.

This is an excellent point. Put this together with the geriatric factor, and I'm thinking the food can't be much better than Luby's cafeteria.

I must be hungry. Suddenly I am craving Luby's cafeteria.

I can't imagine being stuck on a vessel for a week like that. People say "Oh! But you get to stop at ports to shop!" Like I'm going to get a real good idea what the fuck some island nation is like through its glorified gift shop.

I could see myself getting real antsy.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I have been on a cruise to Tallinn!

and Helsinki!

and Oslo!

and Stockholm!

and Copenhagen!

What's not to like? These are the biggest leisure craft on the ocean, giant floating malls full of drunken flirty scandinavians, casino games and "discotheques"!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

adam, you sound like you took a MUCH BETTER cruise than i did!

msp (mspa), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Two words: Pina Colada.

Repeat as needed.

Julie should tell you what there is to do. And that Isaac, man, what a kidder.

But steer clear of Gopher.

The Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Tom, I recommend Hedonism III. For real, I think you need to be there.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

A girlfriend and I were going to go to Hedonism once but I got really grossed out by a lot of the information I got about it, and, well, she's kind of a goer but OTOH every vacation she takes involves "Breakfast with Winnie the Pooh!" so it didn't seem right for her either and we didn't go.

I want to do the swimming with the dolphins shore excursion!
