Whast does this actually mean?? I seem to hear it a lot lately.

MarkH, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New repetitive phrase answers!

MarkH, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Already talked about in another thread. It's about the diamonds...

helen fordsdale, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what diamonds?

MarkH, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's this bling...

Tom, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bling Bling is a girl's best friend.

Trevor, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is my nails.

Emma, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"it's this bling" + "clockfarmer" = i think Tom is paying people to start these threads, purely for the purpose of making these jokes

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaargh! You lot are just revelling in my bemusement, aren't you?

MarkH, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Poor Mark. It just means wealth/symbols of wealth (gold, posh cars, flash clothes). Any more I've missed?

Will, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It derives - rather gloriously - from the verbal representation of the sound the sparkle of diamonds would make if it made a sound.

You'd certainly hear it a lot lately if you hung around with Emma.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you, Will. You are the Elucidation King.

MarkH, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

its all about the esofagus bus

mike hanle y, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't dare hang around with Emma, well, at least until I've read a few more books about etiquette.

MarkH, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd never heard it before. I cant wait to try it out on my friends and family. Clearly this should not be used in an attempted bank robbery in NZ ...yet....

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is strange that despite my current blingy aura everyone at work thinks I hang around with people who have dogs on strings and are on the dole.

Emma, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's outrageous! Show them my beard, Ant's hair and Pete's nipple T- Shirt and they'll soon get the right idea.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the way that the term is increasingly applied to things that would sound in no way like diamonds even in a hypothetical or imaginary way, like bellies and asses.

Tim, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely the words 'twinkle' and 'sparkle' are ample aural equivalent to the way diamonds behave?

Will, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sparkle = verb; bling = ejaculation

mark s, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No because they're polysyllabic.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As opposed to 'bling-bling?' which would be written as a two syllable word in the International Phonetic Alphabet?

Will, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Repetition of bling implies the multiplicity of the diamonds themselves - the ice on the wrist, the ice round the neck, for instance.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That last post sounded more confrontational than I intended. That's what 3 months of Phonology lessons do to you! ;-)

Will, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That makes sense, Tom! I was just confused by the: 'It derives - rather gloriously - from the verbal representation of the sound the sparkle of diamonds would make if it made a sound.' upthread.

Will, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's OK. It's different anyway - 'sparkle' describes how the diamonds look whereas 'bling' describes how they'd sound, if they did.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Think of it in comic book terms: big fat rocks getting hit by a burst of sunlight as you emerge from your SUV: they wouldn't go "sparkle" would they? Surely they'd go "BLING"!

Mark Morris, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BLING BLING!!!!

Pete, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's similar to thge sound you get in manga cartoons when light reflects off giant robot dinosaurs, (see battle of the planets/powerpuff girls), though that's more >spr-ching< than >bling<

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its the transcendental glimmer of a Kenneth Anger film.

Honda, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Bling" hits you in the eye with its sparklitude.

nickn, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also has become synomynus (wow too much coding, cant spell) with the rap music pushed by Cash Money Records and the life style it projects.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 15 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

doesn't pink sing about "blingbling" in "real love".

di, Saturday, 15 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She does'nt want a man with it cuz she wants real love. But she is a FULE - why not ask for both for chrissy?

Tim, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
