I loves me some egg salad. Harry Truman's recipe:
2 eggs
radish
mayonnaise

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

I am, I must admit, fascinated by the american prelediction for gooey lumps of mayo and bits, or yogurt and bits, being called "salad" (ref that picture at threads top). To me salad is fresh raw leaves and vege slices, not a bowl of creamy goo (which is more like a sauce or dip). Thats just me tho.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

Not that I dont like gooey things like egg salad (which I always just called "egg with mayo") or tatziki, I love them, but they dont feel salady.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I noticed that in France and England they just call it "egg mayonnaise." I don't know how egg salad got to be called salad. See also tuna salad, chicken salad, etc. Or ambrosia salad, mmm.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah once of a time if you'dve said to me "want some egg salad" I wouldve assumed it was a bowl of lettuce leaves with some boiled egg halves in.

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

I tried to find Dominican style octopus salad, but that'll have to do.

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Yum... marinated BBQ octopus! I can just get past the idea I'm eating little squiddy suction cups :/

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Jeffrey Steingarten calls this the C.I., or Cephalopod Index. The fact that Americans (or whoever) have begun, in recent years octopus and (especially) calimari by the bucketfuls is proof positive that no food is inherently revolting.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

have begun, in recent years, to eat octopus

from this week's new yorker abt when eleanor roosevelt was in charge of the white house food -

'Her Bobotee Salad was a mixture of cold rice, bananas, almonds, chicory, and curry powder, in a French dressing laced with Worcestershire sauce. "Sometimes we used pineapple cut in lengthwise sticks and rolled lightly in crushed peppermint candy as an opener for the meal"'
