i ate "dinner" around 6pm and it was a small cup of frozen yogurt. now it's midnight and i'm starving and there's fuck-all to eat in the apartment and i have no way of getting anywhere that might sell me food at this hour.

where do you go to quell the late-night munchies?

metal assembly (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 10 June 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

(correct answer: sleep)

metal assembly (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 10 June 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Swingers, Canter's, Damiano's, 101, Fred 62, Ralph's supermarket, Jerry's Deli

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 10 June 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

still starving... but in an hour i can catch the bus to the pancake place! early morning isn't the same as late-night, but it does result in breakfast.

metal assembly (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

gitsis texas hots, filled with crackheads, located across from the porn store

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like my kinda neighborhood!

Tolly Ho - where, when they yell your name out to tell you your order's ready, if you've never eaten their before, they attach the honorary "HO VIRGIN". They've also got pinball!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

The Daily Grind is open all night, fuck knows why. I never see any customers in there during the day, much less at night. Maybe they're laundering money.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

We've got a few in Brighton, but they're not really high class.

The two that spring to mind are the awful 'Buddies' 24 hour café on the seafront, and the infinitely more character 'Market Diner' a café that opens at about 10pm and does "all-day" breakfasts and the like until about 10am. It originally sprung up to serve the now out-of-town wholesale fruit market opposite, but has now become a post-pub and club eatery for those not after a kebab or curry.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Denny's...that's it.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I guess there really aren't many all-nighters in Madison. There are some great late night ones (Ian's Pizza, North American Rotisserie, Jin's Chicken and Fish) but for 24 hours all I can think of are Perkin's, Denny's, and a Steak n' Shake outside of town.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

i ate two bowls of mint ice cream at 2 AM last night.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Do you deliver?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Where I live pretty much the only late night option within walking distance is the 24-hr McDonalds.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

There are a shit ton of chain places open 24 hours here in Lexington - Denny's, Waffle House, Huddle House, Perkin's, White Castle, Hardees, Arby's, Popeye's, even most of the McDonaldses here are open 24 hours. Now that I actually think about it, it's kinda a huge market in these parts, the late night gut filler.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

The "within walking distance" part is key for me though, because usually if I'm eating dinner that late at night it's because I'm not in any condition to drive.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

My neck of Orange County is somewhat blase in this regard -- Norm's, Denny's, etc. God bless Harbor House, though. 'Within walking distance' -- off to the 7/11 to get chips.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Ha I (literally) live at a 24-hour diner! I was unaware of it until I moved in. 24/7 you can get a very tasty pancake the size of a hubcap for $1 or a good cheeseburger + fries for $2.25. Crackhead caveat applies (I think it's all just part of the motherfucking charm)

Aaron A., Friday, 10 June 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Within walking distance from my place, there is the legendary Hollywood Grill at North and Ashland, and a place, which I think is called Dolores' Cafe, at Damen and Chicago. Both would be longish treks away if inebriated, but not out of the realm of possibility. I have eaten at Hollywood a couple of times, but no one dares go to the other place with me.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

if you will dare, i will dare

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

We have the normal Denny's, Steak n' Shake, etc. but then we have some local places like the Triple XXX, whose ceiling has been collecting grease since 1924, and La Bamba, and 2 late night Middle Eastern Places.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

The scariest new one though is a place that serves only carnival food until 3 am right near all the bars and plays big top music constantly.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Ha I (literally) live at a 24-hour diner! I was unaware of it until I moved in.

I don't get this. How can you NOT notice?

"So rent's $400 a month, we took a bit off because you have to share the bathroom and we can only really offer you a booth for a bed...."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Me + friends would always go to the IHOP on Howard in Chicago.

Now that most of my friends live in the city, we go to Clarks a lot. We need a new, less trendy place. (the food is pretty dece at clarks, though)

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Though I'm an all-nite eatery connoisseur I was unaware of this particular restaurant (which is a diner/residence combo) until I moved in as a resident. (xpost)

Aaron A., Friday, 10 June 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Lexington --- Waffle House, Huddle House, Perkin's, White Castle...

See? Kentucky's so confusing. A Waffle House and a White Castle in the same town? It's like living between a Happy Chef and a Dixie Cafe.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh my GOD I want to go to Perkin's.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

They had the best raspberry pie there. Once, the waiter asked how we were enjoying it, and my friend said, "Oh, it's orgasmic!" His reply was, "I"ll come back by with some more napkins then..."

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

haha!

metal assembly (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

which I think is called Dolores' Cafe, at Damen and Chicago

I went there the other night. It where I had the worst cheeseburger I have veer eaten.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

haha

Perkin's was such a weird place to me for a long time, it was this default late-night hang-out for all these different cliques from my high school - the weekend warrior preppy hot girls all tore up drunk, the red-eyed stoner kids (at this point, I had still yet to join the honorable ranks of stonerdom), jock dudes freshly back in town from some away-game massacre, goths, punks, goth-punks, these 5 ridiculously hot black girls who would never tell us what they did on the weekends for fear we might want to hang out with them or something, etc.

Just fast-food and pizza chains, plus Waffle House and Village Inn, but nothing more.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 10 June 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

isn't Mickey D's open all night for some of y'all?

oops (Oops), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

DO NOT GET THE PIZZA

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

What Spencer said, plus drive thrus at McDonald's on La Brea, the JIB on Pico, and some subway, except I forget where it is. And Tommy's is, isn't it?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Man, I miss Taco Cabana. Sam knows what I'm talkin' bout.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

And Jack in the Box! Those are awesome burgers! Do they still have the 99 cent Jumbo Jack?

How is it that Austin had all kinds of great food all night, and Chicago has shit on shit? I wouldn't have guessed that.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Magnolia Cafe! Also open all night. Kirby Lane! All night. Both of then with ample vegetarian options, and Kirby Lane with its own garden out back.

The Hollywood Grill is starting to sound so fucking pathetic. I'm moving back.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

I also forgot Bossa Nova where you can get a full on excellent and meaty Brazilian meal at like 4:30 in the morning. There are also two Carl's Jrs.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Also, Swingers usually has celebrities.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh right - I knew I was forgetting something. Think maybe BK on Wilshire, too.

I KNOW WAY TOO MUCH ABOUT LATE NIGHT FAST FOOD IN THIS TOWN.

Berri's is open until like 4 am, too.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Bossa Nova! Spencer (well, hell, everyone obv.), join us for MBM on Monday because we're getting dinner at Bossa Nova beforehand. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

It's a great spot, JBR.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Harbor House Cafe in Dana Point is a godsend along with Lee's Sandwiches in Garden Grove

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

tons of taco/burrito joints

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Jeff is right: late-night dining in Chicago is pretty much all about taquerias.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Woody Allen once said that one of the reasons he lived in New York is that it could be 4 AM and if you had a taste for egg drop soup, you could get it. "Of course, that's insane, who would do something like that?" he said. "But I like knowing that the possibility exists."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Lee's Sandwiches in Garden Grove

Oh yeah, duh, there's that over in Irvine now. But it is not walking distance from home. Fuck.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

i am so hungry right now but i feel like if i move i am going to pass out

(we have a diner and mc d's and nothing else.)

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 10 June 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah all-nite mexican joints are pretty grand.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

charleston charge (chaki), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)
