owned - to be made a fool of, to be beaten by. Can also be spelled "pwned", to denote a common spelling error in online gaming slang.

Also, overheared a year or so ago...

lad1: Oy, you know what a punani is then?
lad2: Yeah, Your Mum.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Man, I was LITERALLY just about to post this.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

random - odd, irregular, crazy, out there. Not used when something is genuinely random, but as an adjective by those who like to think they live a life less ordinary and have a wacky sense of humour.

Reminiscent of BB auditions and tv dating shows when people talk about how mad they are.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

your mum - a comeback to a question or insult. An implied affront to one's mother, which may be taken as an ineffectual insult or may result in grievous bodily harm.

Should this not be accompanied by a raised digit, indicating "smell your mother's sexy juice on my finger"?

I am sooooo tempted to send in some nonsense using the suggestion form at the bottom of the page.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Go for it. Double points if you post it here first.

Well, they got 'jokes' wrong. And 'laoy dat'? wtf? What kind of spelling is 'laoy'. You people. Stop getting teen wrong.

Alix with an i ? (alix), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I have just submitted

Toast and jam

To take something which is good, and make it better by adding something else.

"Then in the pub the barman gave me too much change back. Toast and jam, that was."

Clean enough and plausible enough for them to print, I think. I am thinking of more.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Also surely if you say 'butters' without pronouncing the t's it's gonna end up sounding like 'buzz' thus bare confusion.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

where's 'gully'?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

stevem that use of 'bare' has opened one big can of worms!

B_RQ, Friday, 10 June 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

OK, let's see if they print this one...

Hongro

Music that is reliant on melody rather than rhythm. The sort of thing with a main tune you can whistle.

"My 'rents went to see Simon & Garfunkel the other day. They're totally Hongro."

coincidentally, today i found a copy of jennifer blowdryer's modern english: a trendy slang dictionary from 1985 -- an awesome send-up of early '80s LA/SF loser punkers. i've seen this in used bookstores before, but for whatever reason i didn't buy it at the time.

my favorite triptych here is "fuck you" (as in "people say i have a bad attitude, but to them i say FUCK YOU") sandwiched in between "foodstamps" and "gentrification."

i think chaki would really like this.

Hongro does not, as yet, appear to have entered the Lexicon of Teen Britain.

I am upset by this.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

no it's just like doing a bad cockney, innit? "oh she is totally buh'ers, mate. bout to lose me pucka."
