"This shit is bananas. b-a-n-a-n-a-s "

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

The clients may not wear Abercrombie and Fitch or Calvin Klein brand clothing, undergarments, or accessories.

g e o f f (gcannon), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

fucking barbarians, these people - what you get after forcing someone through a program like this = an angry, confused young gay man instead of a young gay man

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

this stuff is really hard to take.

g e o f f (gcannon), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

1. LIA wants to encourage each client, male and female, by affirming his/her gender identity. LIA also wants each client to pursue integrity in all of his/her actions and appearances. Therefore, any belongings, appearances, clothing, actions, or humor that might connect a client to an inappropriate past are excluded from the program. These hindrances are called False Images (FI¹s). FI behavior may include hyper-masculinity, seductive clothing, mannish/boyish attire (on women), excessive jewelry (on men), mascoting, and "campy" or gay/lesbian behavior and talk.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

pseudo-sc1entol0gy type stuff! what's the diff really

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Queen Gimmeagfor Freedom and Gleedom, Saturday, 11 June 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

wow, this is very hard to believe. :-(

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Saturday, 11 June 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, somebody should set up a group to "liberate" and "deprogram" straights, or better yet, Fundies. Just for a laugh, like.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Saturday, 11 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

I hope that kid gets through it all OK.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 11 June 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

the thing to remember, the reason this is worth bumping, is that these sorts of places are making connections with parents via the churches they attend - they are recommended by pastors & Christian counselors, and religious thinktanks commission "studies" to argue that there's a science behind it, and then the next thing you know, right behind the "teach the controversy!" intelligent design crap, there's a movement to introduce the teaching of the "facts" about being gay: that it's a "lifestyle choice," that there's "recruitment" by people with an "agenda," etc etc

so anyhow before I sidetracked myself I meant to say: this isn't an uncommon story. This happens all the damn time, there are dozens if not hundreds of these places across the country, and most of the kids who wind up there will never have their stories told, because by the time they get out they'll have been so thoroughly Orwelled that they'll be lucky to remember which shoe to put on which foot

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 11 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Reading the initial link again the story's heartbreaking and maddening in equal measure. Can you imagine what the response would be if organisations like these existed to realign somebody's cultural or political values? It's obscene, and organised pressure needs to be placed on the Government to outlaw these courses. I'm not sure to what extent this kind of thing happens in the UK: it's obviously going on, and obviously going on in a more low-key fashion. War's been declared. Time to fight back.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Saturday, 11 June 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

These people are organized & serious and will doubtless soon be visiting a city council near you to demand that "the truth" be given a voice in the classroom:

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 11 June 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Easy out!

1. No physical violence or physically threatening dialogue. Violation of this rule warrants immediate dismissal from the program.

"I want to punch you in the nose." and you're free!

Welll, of the program, not the fucked up parents.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 11 June 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

These programs rely on parental pressure, that's the most evil part. Scoring political points from dysfunctional families, way to go God Of Love.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Saturday, 11 June 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

mascoting

HUH?

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 11 June 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Wait, we just discussed this a few weeks back, didn't we? On that thread where someone suggested that the theory that gays never figured out how to relate to women still held water?

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 11 June 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

poor kid:-(

latebloomer: Pain Don't Hurt (latebloomer), Saturday, 11 June 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Good lord, how sad. This poor kid is going to be so screwed up by this. The most utterly perverse part is that that the people who run this organization are probably convinced that they *are* acting out of love- but how they could run this kind of program and anchor it on their own "Rule Number One" ("Be authentic, honest, and real") while enforcing such self-deception is beyond me. I recall a documentary about ex-gay movement groups in Britain too- one guy went throught the program, thought he was cured, kept having queer desires, and wound up mutilating his own genitals with acid. Another guy described getting these "gender affirmation hugs" from the male counselor of the program, which eventually led to sexual abuse by that counselor. Horrendous.

It's fun to look at the people in this picture and imagine them shouting things in a stereotypically gay voice:

"Heeeey!"
"Yoo-hoo!"

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 11 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

"I just loooooove my new straight life!"

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 11 June 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

oh man. the guy who came up with that li'l gem must've learned psychology from watching Warner Bros. cartoons. what you end up with at the end = a shock fetish & plenty of new, crippling shame.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 11 June 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

haha... gayest guy in that picture is the one about one-eighth from the right edge of the photo, center, with the black shirt with white squiggle marks on it. the one sticking his chin out.

"are we straight now?"
"oh hell yesss!"

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, they all look pretty gay to me

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Wow. Read the testimonials on the Exodus site. Classic!

God Healed My Marriage
Alan Medinger
"I am frequently asked the question that unfortunately is often considered the acid test: "Are you sexually aroused by women in general?" No, I am not. I love my wife, and we have had a wonderful and enjoyable sexual/ romantic relationship since my healing. But she is the only woman with whom I wish to have sex. Sexual intercourse is meant to be an expression of love between two people in the context of a lifetime commitment. It is only because of the Fall that men have problems lusting for women outside of that committed relationship. Therefore, it seems unlikely that God would replace my homosexuality with a fallen heterosexuality. I thank Him that He has spared me that battle."

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Is that an eye-patch on that chick/dude on the left side behind the woman with the red blouse? Did he/she resist the "treatment" a little too zealously?

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

right now i'm reading about but i'm a cheerleader. http://www.exodus-international.org/news_2000_0801.shtml

Exodus's Bob Davies says the movie is extremely misleading. "It perpetuates the myth that we force people to change, which is untrue. We strongly believe that reparative therapy--any counseling which helps people change their homosexual orientation--should be an option for anyone wanting it. At the same time, no one should be forced into this type of therapy without freely choosing it for themselves."

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

I would love to be able to blame my libido on Mark E. Smith, but it ain't happening.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

The moustachioed guy in the front right corner is demonstrating his new O face.

Err, cos of the electro-shock therapy and the quasi-brainwashing and stuff? It's a couple of steps beyond telling people they're going to hell.

What's the blonde in the front middle seen that nobody else has noticed?

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Sunday, 12 June 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)
