Oh, don't include films, unless they were made for TV.

Mine might be something from Dynasty which is a bit rubbish. Unless there was a sex scene in Scully.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Sunday, 12 June 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

I honestly can't remember.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 12 June 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Me neither, though it must've been in some movie that was on the telly rather than a TV show, because I didn't watch the type of shows that would have sex scenes (and how many shows had them at all back in the eighties?).

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 12 June 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

I do remember seeing a sex scene from this really bad film about a savage warrior, he was deflowering a girl in a cave.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 12 June 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

One of the first sex scenes I remember being aroused by was in Conan the Warrior, where he indeed has sex with a girl in a cave. Could it have been the same scene?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 12 June 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

OMG, it could well have been!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 12 June 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I think the film was called Conan the Barbarian rather than Warrior. But you know what I'm talking about.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 12 June 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

Not a sex scene, but I distinctly remember watching The Three Musketeers - the film version with Michael York in it - when I was younger, and thinking: "isn't it ILLEGAL to show that much cleavage?" No idea *why* I thought that, because I knew that there were pictures showing much more in The Sun every day.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 12 June 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I'd second the conan thing actually but thats a film... asking it to be tv only is a big ask, because as a general rule sex isnt on tv shows, certainly not when I was that young (I havent seen dynasty or dallas ever, believe it or not).

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 12 June 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

(and how many shows had them at all back in the eighties?)

Yeah I'm interested in how it developed and became more acceptable on TV as even in the 80s it didn't seem as common as now. Was wondering if Dynasty really was one of the 'breakthrough' shows in this respect, not that I remember anything that gratuitious in it (not by today's standards at least).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Sunday, 12 June 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

must have been something on Days of our Lives since it was the soap of choice in our house. but I don't remember in particular

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 12 June 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

in a weird kind of way, i don't think i've ever seen a sex scene on tv, knoworrimean?

[maybe i will start a new thread about how much i've cracked up]

n_RQ, Sunday, 12 June 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Bit of an odd one mine. I recall watching the Woody Allen film 'Love and Death' when i was about 7. Don't really remember if it contained a sex scene as such (and haven't seen it since) but certainly an early introduction to the carnal side of social relations.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Sunday, 12 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

i'm thinking bond films, really. like the end of moonraker. something like that.

n_RQ, Sunday, 12 June 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Okay I might have to mod the thread title to say 'NOT FILMS'.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Sunday, 12 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

teh first one that got me excited was the nick roeg 'castaway' with ollie reed and amanda donohoe with her tits out all the time.

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 12 June 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

The first one I ever saw was the opening scene from "Lizstomania", where Rog (as Liszt) was bonking away furiously while a metronome was going, reaching over every so often to lower the counterweight to make the metronome go faster and faster. "So that's the rhytm method then" thought I, to myself. (I'm so glad I didn't say that out loud, as my embarrassed parents would have laughed a tremendous amount and gone ridiculous, as they did about anything I did that was in any way clever or cute.)

I can't remember!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 13 June 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

I was in bed ill one night when I was 7 years old. I woke up and my head and hair were wet. This bothered me so I ran downstairs to ask my parents what was going on. It was around 11pm. I opened the door to the living room and my jaw dropped as I looked at the tv and saw a woman running around a cocktail party with her breasts on display. My parents were equally shocked to see me as I'd been sick in bed and my head was covered in vomit. Don't know what the show on tv was though.

Later, when I was around 11 or 12, my first proper exposure to sex on tv was the magnificent Dream On series. I recently re-watched the first two series of this and it's second only to Curb Your Enthusiasm in the great us tv show stakes.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 13 June 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Possibly Poldark? I don't know whether it was full sex as such or just ripping bodices though.

[Conan the Barbarian might have been first, for me too, if films counted. Weird.]

Archel (Archel), Monday, 13 June 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

I remember a young couple playing strip poker together on Howard's Way. Abby and someone I think.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 13 June 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

I justb remembered!! THE HISTORY MAN!!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 13 June 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember seeing sex scenes before we had cable. But once we did -- MMMMMMM BOYYYYY!!! Emanuelle, you made a man out of me!

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 13 June 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I remember being incredibly shocked when I saw The Sweeney (I think it might have been the film, actually, sorry) when the nice lady from the coffee ads with Gareth Hunt took her top off and we saw her BARE BREASTS!

We were gobsmacked.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 13 June 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

my first proper exposure to sex on tv was the magnificent Dream On series.

yeah I was thinking about this show as I used to watch it precisely because I knew it was going to feature 'rumpo' (cf Smash Hits 1989). It was the Sex In The City of it's time and this was 14 years ago or so.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 13 June 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

I remember as a pubescent kid seeing a version of Orton's "Entertaining Mr Sloane" on telly. I don't know who was most embarrassed, me or my mum as we gradually became aware of what we were watching. Definitely sex at the grubby end of the spectrum.

frankiemachine, Monday, 13 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

I vaguely remember "Bouquet of Barbed Wire" from back in the mid-to-late 70s which was one of those programmes that became infamous for the number and variety (and content) of it's sex scenes (eg father/ daughter incest amongst other things iirc). I can remember not understanding what all the fuss was about...

My excuse is I was probably only six or seven years old.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Monday, 13 June 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure exactly which movie it was in, but it was probably when I was spending the night over at my friend's house who had HBO. His parents would let us sleep in the living room, and we would stay up late and watch R-rated movies. One of the earliest I saw was the rape scene from A Clockwork Orange, so that probably warped me for life.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 13 June 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

The first nudity I remember, though, was the hot-tub servants in the beginning of Coming to America.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 13 June 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

"teh first one that got me excited was the nick roeg 'castaway' with ollie reed and amanda donohoe with her tits out all the time.
-- Masked Gazza"

Heh, yes, that was on C5 every month for its first year I think. Classic scene: Ollie Reed running naked across the beach declaring, "Lucy, Lucy, I simply must fuck you!"

What was that C4 thing about all the aristos living by the sea and fucking each other? The Camomile Lawn, that's it! Showing my age here. It seemed to cause an awful lot of fuss at the time. It seems that as soon as the Tories went out of office people stopped getting so worked up about sex on TV. Queer As Folk was the last one to cause a stir really.
What was that detective thing with Neal Pearson as a shag-happy rogue cop? That was probably the first place I saw sex scenes, although they tended to show the lead up and the aftermath rather than the dirty deed itself.

Oh my god, the hot tub in Coming To America. I remember being excruciatingly embarrassed watching that at my Granny's house as an 11 or 12 year old. It was her choice of viewing as well! She didn't bat an eyelid. I shouldn't be so shocked. She's a liberal lady and has 1950s hardbacks of Henry Miller and Simone De Beauvoir on her shelves.

Stew (stew s), Monday, 13 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Diane Keene, that was her name. Sigh. I am much older than many of you.

I think the first time I ever saw proper sex on telly was in The Singing Detective. The sight of Patrick Malahide's arse will haunt me forever.
