I think all religions are forms of cults.

Dunno - is ritual the same as cultishness? I'm a VERY lapsed Catholic. I was never prevented from 'leaving' the church, and nobody has ever tried to drag me back into it, spiritually or literally. The Catholic Church is a business as much as anything else, and as such it's prob. no more or less sinister/wicked than any other major corp. Of course there is always an element of brainwashing/indoctrination involved w/relgions, but in the case of the Catholic Church it's not a particularly difficult 'program' to resist, in my experience.

Those rituals become so cliche over the years that they don't have the ability to awe, psychologically. I didn't find it hard to leave the church because when I did go, I just saw a bunch of bored parishioners shuffling and mumbling their way through the Mass. Then there was Father Football, who could say a 25 minute mass whenever Notre Dame was playing on a Sunday. We always went to that one.

THE ONLY GOOD THINGS ABOUT CATHOLICISM IS THE INCREASED SEX APPETITE AND THE FACT THAT THEY LET YOU BELEIVE IN EVOLUTIONA ND TEH BIG BANG AND ARE NOT BIBLE LITERALISTS

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't flatter it, cults are way more exciting.

I don't believe any GOOD Religion is a cult. I do believe though that the Catholic Church is in a good position financially of giving more food and medicine to needy people.

Yes, it is. It's older and, therefore, more acceptable than other cults. No word conveys absolute truth, which is why I find pedantic discussions quite funny. As if nailing down just the right word is going to justify your description. A description is never complete or true. About the Catholic Church's cult status: Most people would tell you "no". Others would tell you "yes". The dictionary offers both "yes" and "no":

cult (klt)

n.

1.

a.	A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false,

with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the

guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.

b.	The followers of such a religion or sect.

2.	A system or community of religious worship and ritual.

3.	The formal means of expressing religious reverence; religious ceremony

and ritual.

4.	A usually nonscientific method or regimen claimed by its originator to have

exclusive or exceptional power in curing a particular disease.

5.

a.	Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person,

principle, or thing.

b.	The object of such devotion.

6.	An exclusive group of persons sharing an esoteric, usually artistic or

intellectual interest.

To some, these definitions imply "no". To me, each one implies "yes".

The only diff between cult and religion is the number of followers and the level of mainstream acceptance. If everyone's doing it, it's not unconventional, right?

One of my aunts has a picture of Padre Pio in her living room and I always do a double take and think it's John Virgo.

Considering how ill he seemed to have been for his entire life he did well to hit 81. I don't imagine too many peasant children born in the 1880s lived that long.

Depending on how dubious you consider his varying ailments to have been, i guess
