I want to buy a 'beginners' sewing machine for a birthday present, but I'd rather not pay the ludicrous money being asked by my local stockist. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Second hand is a good way to go. buy one without any ludicrous novelty stitches.

That's a good tip, ta. The sales assistant in my local shop said that the cheapest one - which I found quite pricey - was ever so simple. And then she went on to list all these myriad features.

I've got one of the pretty basic ones (indeed from Argos, I am a secret chav) and it does sewing stuff fine. One with stitch length adjustment is good if it can be found for your price range, otherwise straight, zigzag and maybe buttonhole settings would be fine for starters, I reckon.
