Starting from part that's behind me: fax machine, door lock opener, glass vase (empty cos the flowers died), dictionary, thesaurus, Zagat guide for 2001, several binders regarding bank forms and tax IDs. The part that's to my left: big blue mug with potpourri in it, silver dish with candle, my purse, little shelf that stands off the desk with a picture of me and Ramon, the baseball given to me after I hit the ump, a silver vase with a flag collection in it, a jar full of pens, and tissues. under the shelf is a tray with my "SIGN HERE" tags, stapler, Altoids, tape, white outs, more pens, post its, and paper clips are. next to the shelf/tray, there's a jar of Kiehl's cuticle treatment and a travel size Lubriderm, followed by a desk lamp with a post it note thing attached, then is my 12 CD holder (CDs: Nelly Furtado, St. Etienne's Interlude and Tiger Bay, the Best of Blondie, Aaliyah's self-titled, Tori Amos's Boys for Pele, New Order's Substance, All Saints' Saints and Sinners, and several mix CDs) which has my desk calendar on top of it. Then is my computer with all the computer acoutrements, then you turn the corner to my right side and there's another picture of Ramon, my giant telephone, three stackable trays with wires in them, a pad of paper with my name and business info on it, some mail, checks I need to file, a box for phone messages, a three hole punch, an employee's AMEX bill that I have to approve, and an empty basket that usually holds candy for my coworkers.

Ally, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Several books leaning against the partition (Stroustrup/Blaszczak/Camel book/PvdL/Lakos and more that I'm too bored to list), postit notes, card from ex-coworker, bag of apples, hole punch, small car given to me by florist outside the building, two switch boxes, mobile phone, two spare monitor cables, black pen, desktidy containing the usual junk, Gantt control manual, wristwrest, mousemat, mouse, keyboard, monitor, two boxes containing MSDN library CDs styled to look vaguely Imac-y in a really wanky way, Pinback CD, phone and another mosuemat.

There is so much crap on my desk that I doubt it actually has a surface. I think as you dig down through the crap you just find more and more crap, only getting denser and denser. In the end you reach the centre of my desk, which is made out of metallic crap like you get at the heart of Jupiter.

This is funny because I just took inventory of (a part of) my desk to someone on facebook today, to demonstrate that her new, lean and chic setup could never accomodate my desking habits. That was from memory, though. What is actually on my desk may take a minute to catalog. In fact, I'll categorize.

Computer equipment:
19" flatscreen PC monitor
the ol' ubiquitous Linksys Wireless-G router
external DVD burner
two external hard drives, 1Tb and 500Gb
cable modem
21" iMac G5
two keyboards, a Mac Titanium and an old black Mac G3 keyboard
two mouses, a Mighty Mouse and an ancient but indestructible IntelliMouse
an iPod touch, with earphone wires all over the place
a USB cord and a USB cord extension
a USB SD card reader
two flash memory thumb drives
a Bluetooth USB dongle

Other:
small velvet bag, originally containing wine stoppers, now used for iPod
two pouches of tobacco, one mostly empty
16 oz plastic water bottle, on its 100th refill, probably
3 spools of various CD-Rs and DVD-Rs
neglected coffee cup
empty highball glass
pen cup, bursting with writing implements and scissors
pencil sharpener
small battery powered lamp, the kind with sticky stuff on the back
half a roll of quarters
12" plastic ruler, school supply style
two white art erasers
various loose pencils, pens, and Sharpie markers
a gel eye mask, unrefrigerated
the part of my tripod that screws into the camera but pops off of the tripod
an old-ass Canon PowerShot camera
hard case containing my spare/alternate glasses
two pads of post-it notes
earphones for my phone
my phone
ashtray
two small desk lamps
orange prescription bottle of pills
a one-hour kitchen timer, the old-fashioned ticking kind
two lighters
three books of matches, unprinted
a little square bowl filled with change, nail clippers, chap stick, screws, nails, twist ties, and heaven knows what all

kenan, Friday, 16 July 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

-a ralph's supermarket circular
-a letter from kaiser permanente telling me to make an appointment for a pap test (i just did one)
-a pay stub
-a checkbook

DâM-EdnA-FunK (get bent), Friday, 16 July 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)
