Search and Destroy: Government Workers

Most people just hate them across the board, but they are very, very different. My favorite is mailmen/women. They're always cool, in a burnt out kind of way. My mailman is 100 years old, but he is incredibly friendly, and talks like a surfer.

The worst are at the Penn. Unemployment Office. Now, I know I'm lazy and worthless, but I've never been treated so poorly in my life. And it's like this every time I talk to them, so it's not like I got a bad employee one time.

Since I mentioned the Pennsylvania Unemployment Office, yes, that does count.

A whole bunch of my musician friends all got each other jobs at the Army Corps of Engineers, including two of my bandmates, a former bandmate of Will Oldham's who has his own project, and a Brooklyn songwriter guy named M1k3 W3x13r who's starting to get noticed now. Their job sounds awesome -- they basically ride around on boats all day or comb the beach on ATVs. Often, they go in late and get out early, and they have decent salaries and good benefits packages.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

OH YEAH CARNIVORE!!! THOSE BASTARDS READING MY FUCKING EMAIL AND SHIT

HERE I'LL PUT A BUNCH OF ECHELON KEYWORDS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST SO IT WILL FOOL THE NSA SPOOKS

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 June 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Those job summaries don't really follow the traditional "describe, in any way at all, what the hell this position exactly does" at all, do they?

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but dude, haven't you ever wondered what the weather in Hawaii was like? In a really anal-retentive, scientific way?

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 June 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

No, actually. Not once in my life. It seemed very obvious, to me at least.

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

The "Intelligence Advisor" position makes it sound like you are actually applying to become the Secretary of the Treasury, actually.

Allyzay flies casual (allyzay), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

fuck the US post office!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I am a govt employee and I would like to express great hatred for other govt employees who come and ask me stupid questions at the last minute.

All DOC job descriptions tend to rave about the weather and the natural amenities because those are like the perks.

Seeing a job posting for an archaeologist in Hawaii is the first thing that's ever made me want to take a gov't job. I assume they just want you to dig up stuff, or sit around in a lab and analyze stuff, or make posters for visitors about what other people dug up, right? Not terribly well-paid (cost of living 15-35% higher than in the continental US? holy shit), but I'll never be qualified to get ANY well-paid job anyway!

Maria (Maria), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Park Ranger looks like it would be cool.

bob n0pe (bobnope), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Only YOU...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

tombot always gets so understandably riled up with carnivore/echelon.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I love how the first 2 of Toms job listings are like 100k a year salaries for being Mulder or someone, but the poor archaeologist who has to work around sulphurous volcanoes only gets 24-29k a year, hows that work!/?!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 June 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

I was a govt employee once, and I can say I know why people like DMV (RTA, here) and unemployment staff are so bored and "dont give a crap", its because they deal with EVERYONE, and SO many people you deal with day after day are angry, rude, demanding or freaking out. I had a friend who had a dole recipient threaten to shoot herself and her kids (while on the phone) because her dole had been refused that week. I mean good god, I couldnt handle that shit. Doing peoples passports was a crap enough job for me.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 June 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Every park ranger I have ever encountered has been extremely pleasant and extremely helpful. The only bad thing about them is the jealousy the engender in me.

oops (Oops), Monday, 13 June 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

City employees pretty much all suck across the board. I find it difficult to vocalize how much they annoy me every time I have to work with a group of them, for such a variety of reasons (from the lazy, dim underlings to the middle-management who confuse themselves with people who make much more money).

So could I still get an 'Intelligence Advisor'/'sensitive' job if I was once a member of the Socialist Party USA? Does the government still hold that against you these days?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 13 June 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

no, you couldn't milo, sorry. even my bro's super-straight up-tight friend couldn't get a job analyzing satellite photos at dia. convinced it's just because his dad played the vice principal on "fame" (can't trust those hollywood types).

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 June 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

i keep pondering applying to the IRS, the SEC, or the PBGC. so one day not only may i be a dreaded government employee, but ONE WHO WILL PROSECUTE YO ASS.

(seriously, now: any government employee who does anything even vaguely "welfare"-oriented -- stuff like unemployment, immigration, and Medicaid -- will treat those who apply for such benefits like shit. i've seen this 1st hand.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 13 June 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

As a UK government employee working in welfare I can confirm that the only people who get treated like shit by us are either the ones who are very obviously taking the piss or the ones who treat us like shit first.

We're the ones who usually get treated like shit because people tend to assume that because we're there to give them money and have no choice in the matter they can treat us anyhow they like. It's interesting to note that most people somehow think we deserve it.

three years pass...

destroy the fool who just sent this gross admission of his own pathetic incompetence (note: I am responsible for the boogedys)

BOOGEDY-BOOGEDY,

If it isn’t too much trouble, could BOOGEDY spell out SARs as Situation Awareness Reports in future emails please? We utilize many acronyms within the National Operations Center and SAR is one that could potentially give us issues if not spelled out.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Bonus points for pluralizing operations in the message body and forgetting to do the same in his signature. You sir are a fuckin' embarrassment and how you got to be "chief" of anything is exactly why people get to stereotype all civil servants as lazy morons
