It's something most of us have probably heard a hundred times, but could this possibly be true?

Jean-Paul Picaper, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Depends on what type of shirt she's wearing - it it's a loose sweater, then maybe not, but with a tight top and an open cleavage, sure. I'd say it's not just men who notice them though, but women too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

On women, I tend to notice whatever feature I've been thinking about on myself most recently. So if I'm desperate for new shoes I'll look at shoes, if I'm feeling podgy I'll look at stomachs, if I'm having a bad hair day I'll look at hair, and if I'm feeling flat-chested or bra-disadvantaged I'll look at breasts.

I suspect this is not how men's minds work.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

"One of the first things..." That's "one" of the "first".

Bifidus Digestivum (Dada), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, obviously it isn't always *the* first, even with an open cleavage.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

Just thinking about this, with regard to one particular woman, I think her breasts were one of the last things I noticed - the face is obviously the first one

Bifidus Digestivum (Dada), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

eyes & smile in that order.

then the body.

the kookier the better for me.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

I always see girls noses first. I'm not even particularly attracted to people's noses, it's just the first thing that grabs my attention.

Thing nearest to me, I suppose.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Two of the first, technically.

nono, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Noses I like, especially ones with bumps in them

Bifidus Digestivum (Dada), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

"One of the only things..."

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

not really true for me, unless it's like bb6's lesleh in-your-face. i tend to notice the face, what with it being at eye-level, the most expressive part of the body, and the site of primary communication etc etc.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

the first thing i notice in a woman is her handle. god how depressing.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Haircut, face, clothes, general build, in that order.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

SMELL

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Actually, if I first see a girl from far away it can be a different order. Probably general build first, then. And I am always making mistakes: so many times I'll spot someone at the end of the street, and think, "She is FANTASTIC," and it'll turn out to be some old guy in a tracksuit. There is a good bit in Lolita about this.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

A (female) friend of mine once noted the paradox related to breasts: a lot women's clothes are designed to draw attention to the breasts, and many women make a deliberate effort to enhance the appearance of their breasts, yet it's still considered wrong to ogle at them.

(I'm not defending breast-ogling here, just noting the contradiction.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

(Which I guess tells a lot about the breast-centric world we live in.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure your friend was the first to notice this paradox, Tuomas.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

No, but she was the first one I heard to put it into words.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

It's tough being a man sometimes

Bifidus Digestivum (Dada), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Ah Tuomas, don't ever change.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

The best thing is when a woman is wearing an interesting pendant or something. It draws your attention to her chest, and you get a readymade excuse for looking there.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

There speaks a man of experience

Bifidus Digestivum (Dada), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Argh, that reminds me of the one of the awful blind dates in the last episode of The Office (because I just watched it over the weekend). No offense to you, Martin.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

martin is the author of those 'STOP LOOKING AT MY TITS' t-shirts.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

No, for me it's usually the eyes unless some other body part happens to fall into my line of sight.

Yeah I was instantly reminded of David Brent too. He's a joker is Martin.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

unless some other body part happens to fall into my line of sight.

Surely I am not alone in finding this choice of verb alarming.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

One of the first things I notice about a woman is her TITS.JPG.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

actually that came from a date I had a couple of weeks ago. It took me ages to work out that the pendant reminded me of the Wu's W symbol. She thought I was checking out her tits.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I've been caught starting at the tittehs enough times that I have learned the hard way. DON'T LOOK. DON'T EVEN SNEAK A LOOK. THEY ALWAYS KNOW, AND THEY DO NOT LIKE IT.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Threads like this remind me that I have yet to replace that pair of glasses I lost two-and-a-bit years ago. I probably should or something.

I'd be hard to fit onto a necklace.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

why would being hard help? wait i don't think i wanna know the answer to that.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, an amazing Freudian slip there. :-) ("It'd," of course.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

I don't think she minded it, in fact. Subsequent events seem to have confirmed that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

i think frequently i notice a woman's legs before any other um feature. at least, this happened once today.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

kinda depends on how far away your are and from what direction you're looking at no? if youre coming from straight on about 10 feet away, i'd say eyes first.
