Father's Day present ideas

Is it just me or are dads the hardest people to shop for?
Anyways, give me ideas for father's day presents I can get on Amazon.com (because it's less than a week away).
My dad:
doesn't listen to music.
doesn't like to own DVDs (he rarely watches movies multiple times)
reads a lot, but I never know what he's into reading. He generally likes sci-fi and history books.
is into tasty beers and wines.
is not particularly sporty, but does enjoys walks and nature in general.

I'm not looking to spend too much because it's Father's Day, not a real holiday, and because I am poor.
I was thinking of getting him a hammock, but I'm not sure if he has one already or not of if he'd have anywhere to hang it up.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

a bill for my therapy.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

My dad:

loves his job (he is accountant)
has no attention span (for movies, music, entertainment in general)
SOMETIMES plays golf

has NO other interests.

AND it's his birthday next month. help!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

how much is a beer of the month club?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

for xmas I got my folks an enormous cheese basket from overstock.com, it took them months to get through it. Everyone likes cheese. (to go with tasty beer and wine, n/a, or maybe get a beer of the month membership? could be pricey though. maybe a book on plants for his nature walks? I got my stepfather in law a book for xmas that was all about how to survive in the wild, it's a good read even if you're not planning on getting lost.)

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking of giving my dad that Luaka Bop Sounds of West Africa comp, which I have and like -- and I think he would like, too, since he asked for a Fela Kuti CD for Christmas a few years back. Other than that ... maybe the new Nick Hornby novel, since he was talking about that when I saw him on Sunday? I don't think he's bought it yet.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

If I ever have children, I don't want to be a "dad"!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Also - my parents don't drink!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Or take pleasure from food!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking about getting him the Bob Newhart Show first season DVD, even though he doesn't really watch DVDs that much. I am a bad son.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I was going to get my dad a birdwatching guide but he beat me to it.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

a stripper

stelf)xxxx, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

I bought them a DVD player AND DVDs. I have exhausted that option.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, new idea: year-long subscription to The Believer.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Your dad is an indie!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I always get my dad a stats book on baseball or football for Father's Day. Something that he doesn't have to sit down and read, but can keep around all summer in case he wants to argue with Joe Buck about some fact morsel uttered on television.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say a subpoena but I like Jess's idea better.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

my mom got my dad a book called "big dead place" for his birthday. it's about antarctica, pretty neat. also, astronaut food is always cool.

i have no idea what to get.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

my dad always asks for and receives a bottle of old spice aftershave, bless his heart.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Jaymc's dad sounds like he's as hip as he could possibly be, given that he's, you know, a dad. He's a professor or something, am I right?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

My dad is a Reggaeton DJ and his jeans cost $1000.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

father-in-law was given a large golfsmith's gift card this weekend.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Yes, he is, K. He teaches English. Yeah, I don't think of him as hip exactly, but he kinda knows what's up, or at least he wants to know what's up. And so I kinda like contributing to this.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

One time he slipped an off-handed reference to Pavement in a class he was teaching. He knew nothing about the band except that I liked them, but he wanted to gauge the students' reaction. (It was in the context of "so say you're back in your dorm room, just hanging out, listening to Pavement or whatever...") Apparently, no one flinched (his students aren't very indie) except for this one sleepy kid in the back who suddenly became very alert.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

why are there no good cards for stepfathers? this annoys me every year.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

As (I think) the only father to have posted on this thread yet, I want you all to take a moment to look at Stelfox's post and remind yourselves how OTM he is.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. My dad is also newly single...

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

One time he slipped an off-handed reference to Pavement in a class he was teaching.

There was a prof at UT that was way into Pavement. Had a Pavement sticker on his office door. I never took a class with him, but you'd see him at every show. It was... cool? Is that the word?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

My friend Chris, who was visiting this past weekend, has a reputation as the "rock and roll math professor" at the school in Memphis where he teaches. Probably because he goes to shows all the time and is more than likely spotted by students.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Arrgh! There's nothing like a cheap trinket to say "I can't be arsed to think well about you, so how about a meaningless geegaw instead."

Buy a blank card and write the nicest things you can truthfully say about your dad. Hand it to him. Let him read it. This doesn't cost much and is far, far and away better than handing him a hunk of whatnot.

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

keenan, did you go to UT?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah. I thought you knew that.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

no I did not. or I forgot. what was yr major/grad year?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Radio Tv Film/Communications. I did not graduate, but I was there until 1996.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I remember 'cause you were in Plan II, and so was my roommate of three years.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

yes we were around at the same time then.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I missed you among 60,000 other people.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

it is unbeleviable.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

the first idea when i saw just the thread title was "condoms".

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

my dad is really into tools & so i bought him a subscription to this woodworking magazine he likes.
for YEARS my dad did the same thing as teeny's dad with the old spice. then he switched cologne out of the blue & it's only available on the east coast.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Help me out ILX: how do I tell my son, a 6 year old, that I want a hooker for Father's Day, without having to explain to him exactly what a hooker is/does?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

"Mama, Daddy said he wants to go fishing. Something about hooks, anyway..."

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

since i'm assuming he doesn't have his own income, just tell him, "daddy will take care of his own present this year, son." and then daddy can get to it.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Get them all the first dvd from Carmen Electra's Strip Aerobics series. I guarantee they won't be disappointed.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

It is true that my dad would love that.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

the thought of my dad watching carmen electra's strip tease is probably more disturbing than the idea of he & my mom "doin' it."

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

because of the video itself, or the effects it has on Mom?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I love how the phrase doin' it becomes "doin' it" when it comes to parents.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

All married men over 50 should be allowed at least one free hoochie token.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

n/a, he likes movies but just not watching them multiple times? what about getting him a subscription to netflix?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

hmmm, that's not a bad idea.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Is there a UK equivalent?

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Food is always a good gift . . . cooking him something or getting a gift certificate to go out somewhere. Or you could see what kinds of places he frequents near his work & get him a couple gift certificates to those places. Or how about a photo of yourself for his home or office?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

and condoms?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

yes. a photo of yourself holding a bouquet of condoms.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

They already have the Blockbuster Netflix-esque dealy.
I just got him the Bob Newhart Show DVDs. On the gift card I said something like "I know you don't watch DVDs that often, but this is for an emergency when there's NOTHING GOOD on TV" or something like that. He'll probably watch a couple of episodes.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Get them all the first dvd from Carmen Electra's Strip Aerobics series. I guarantee they won't be disappointed.

(I watched it and I was disappointed. They should've called that video Carmen Electra's Aerobics.)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

I was disappointed too.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I nearly always end up getting my dad books or DVDs, because I have no idea what else he might want. For Father's Day, though, he's getting a print of a train painting - hopefully it will be a bit of a change.

(I spotted it in the souvenir shop at Caernarfon railway station the other month and thought: "ooh! Father's Day!")

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

teeny, does your dad live in Phoenix?

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh, for Christmas I got my dad a cookbook he really wanted and made him a mix CD. I think he was more excited about the CD. And it was definitely the cheapest present I've ever given him!

Also cooking stuff is always good, as kelsey mentioned.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

My dad is so impossible to buy for. It's his birthday soon after father's day and then, to stress me out even more, he went and got married in the middle of the two dates. So now I have father's day, wedding anniverery, birthday.

My dad:
Loves cooking, but used to be a chef, so has most of the kit.
Enjoys a nice whiskey/ good bottle of wine/ well kept beer/ swanky G&T (like father, like daughter), but runs a pub, making all booze presents somewhat redundant.
Not massively into music.
Loathes sports (again, like father...)
Film taste impossible to predict.
Books also tricky unless I somehow manage to call the house when my step mother is in alone.

Help me ILx!

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I think that a Nintendo DS would make a great gift for Father's Day. I know that if my wife bought me one on behalf of our young children I would be delighted.

(this is where I find out if she lurks on here when I'm not at home)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

I bought my dad The OC DVD sets. I wrote in the card, "Have a SCANDALOUS father's day!" because every time he speaks about The OC he always says at least once, "It's so scandalous!" My mother vouches that he also does this while WATCHING the show.

Like a 67 year old woman. At least his sudden interest in nonsense means I no longer have to go on Amazon to exhaust the "Dad Rock Box Sets" options every holiday.

The high street chain WH Smith has apologised after a book about the Austrian rapist Josef Fritzl was promoted as a Father's Day present.

The book about the father who kept his daughter imprisoned in an underground dungeon for 24 years was advertised in a Lewisham store, in south-east London, as one of "Top 50 Books for Dad".
