Do you agree with Geldof that selling tickets on ebay is "sick profiteering"?
For once I agree with Sir Bob.

yes

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's pretty fucked up.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Typical of Geldof's anti free-market thinking. People should be able to buy and sell those tickets as they please.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

If people are stupid enough to buy tickets to this they should be charged an arm and a leg anyway.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

People are sabotaging the auctions anyway. The first three pages all now have bids over a million quid.

Just as well if this is the calibre of seller

I guess so, but it's not illegal and it's not PROVEN profiteering as the money made from sales COULD theoretically have been given to charity anyway. Bit judgemental of Bob there (of course people were after a cynical profit but it was a nice idea...).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah because persuading people to give money to mobile phone companies in order to 'win' tickets is worse.

GOOD CALL, BOB.

fuck geldof and fuck the starving marvins.i,m english and cant afford a fucking takeaway.how about a benefit gig for me you gobby irish cunt

charming!

thorny issue, this one. in theory it should be fine to flog your auction-won tickets without recourse, but if they've a shred of humanity they could at least, say, give half the money to charity and give a decent reason for keeping the rest - kids, unit fees, hospital etc.

as it is, the sellers seem largely to be awful morons so fuck it.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Geldof should let the auctions run, if everyone's bidding a million quid the sellers get stuffed for final value fees of £18,000 and ebay have said they'd give any fees to Live8. Win-win situation I'd say.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

When the record companies use these gigs to promote the acts who appear, will that be sick profiteering? Funny how Geldof shuts up when confronted with the hand that feeds him.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Bob Geldof is the worst person in history.
