Desperately Seeking HP Sauce

A couple years back I spent some time in London, and my mind was completely blown by this little brown bottle next to the ketchup in pretty much every restaurant I ate in. It took me a little less than 5 minutes to be converted to The Way of HP Sauce. Why is it that Christians think wine is a better representation of the blood of Christ than HP sauce? (aside from the Bible)

Back in the Washington, DC area I've spent a lotta energy trying to find brown sauce, but it seems like supermarkets just don't carry the stuff, not even in the 'Ethnic Foods' section. Where can I find some HP Sauce? Any ideas?

I've considered trying to make my own, but I feel like that's probably a bad idea.

matlewis, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

there might be some specialty uk shops there, i'd imagine there'd have to be.

Look for 'London Pub Sauce' in your local supermarket. It'll be near the ketchup and A1 steak sauce. It's just HP sauce rebranded for the US market.

(I'm assuming you'll be able to get it in DC, I've had no trouble finding it in Pittsburgh.)

If you're looking locally, Classic Cigars & British Goodies in Clarendon (it's steps from the Metro) would be one of the most likely places to have it.

I'll send you a bottle, if you like.

Classic Cigars & British Goodies is a great store. If you're close to any Wegmans I'm pretty sure they carry it, too.

I buy HP sauce at world cost plus market, it's a chain, maybe there's one nearby

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I think I've been to that shop: Axis Sally and I bought Silk Cuts there.

My local supermarket has HP sauce, but it has a small little section of British and Irish foods.

I can't think of a world without HP. Worcestershire Table Sauce has been a little harder to find though.

HP sauce is really good on taco bell thingers. Um, gorditas? Yeah.

Jacqui Pickles (Jacqui Pickles), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

Do HP still make the other flavours? At one point I recall there was a tomato relish type sauce, a curry sauce(I think?) and a BBQ one, they dont exist nommore tho. HP is great - its like a thick sauce version of Worcestershire (which is an absolute staple in my house - great in soups, great on eggs).

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

I think the key ingredient all round is the tamarind.

There was HP Fruity sauce, a tad sweeter than the original they still do it. What happened to "Daddy's Sauce"? is that siill about.

You can get HP here in Thailand now, which is strange

Daddy's sauce is still around, cheaper and more vinegary but still very good. HP still do other sauces here, Fruity, chilli, BBQ none is as good though. The japanese are into brown sauce in a big way and it doesn't surprise me it's popular in Thailand.

a good alternative to HP is Japanese Bulldog sauce.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Pickapeppa sauce is like a thinner and spicier version of HP sauce, I like it even better.

When you're a republic you don't get to enjoy the fruits of the British Empire...

I know what I'm putting on my steak sanger tonight.

I love the idea that HP sauce might be found in the Ethnic Food section.

I've recently been converted to the way of HP with my fry-up. I'm finding, however, that I'm needing more and more of the stuff to get the same hit. Is this the rocky road to dependancy?

Was Daddy's sauce ever actually advertised by the late Shirley Crabtree, or is that a false memory I've got?

No, I think you're right there

Hahahaha

As for HP sauce, I once had a bottle of it that was 15 years old. It was almost finished, but a friend offered me a new, full bottle, for what little was left. He believed it improved with age.

Do any other parliaments, palaces, government buildings etc have their own condiments?

Feel sorry for people raised without HP
