i'm 28.6, but i'm REALLY 31.2. i'd better start planning my funeral now.

http://www.realage.com/ (enter a fake e-mail address, and at the end choose "skip this step" when it asks you if you want to invite your friends to take the test)

They won't let me take it for the following (no-)reason: "A valid age to take the RealAge test is between 20 and 90 years of age."

metal detective (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Totally. However, my resting heart rate probably threw it off: 60bpm.

Take this with a shaker of salt, however, since I just moved from 8000ft to sea level. I'm like a superhuman down here. This will last approx. 3 weeks according to science. Then I'm back to 75-80 (thanks coffee!)

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Calendar Age: 41.6
Real Age: 39.4

I thought my lack of exercise would be more of a problem than it was. Great BP, resting heart rate 72, no health problems, just a little stress. This beach-ball belly might be a heart-attack problem someday, but so far so good.

i eat pretty healthy (high-fiber diet, low red-meat intake, don't drink more than once a week usually), have been getting lots of exercise lately, have normal cholesterol/resting heart rate/blood pressure, and the only health problems i listed were some allergies/asthma and depression/anxiety, all of which i've been treating in some way or another. but that stress... it's a killer!

metal detective (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

I was doing OK until the car questions. Driving 20k miles in a truck over the next year bumped me up three or four years by itself. Allergies & rheumatoid arthritis, plus being an ex-smoker took care of the rest.

xpost - I gave the semi-loner answer to all of those and it knocked a half year off.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm 25.5 but apparently my "real age" is... 25.9. And the reason why my "real age" is older? Probably due to the fact that the only exercise I get is when I'm doing what the site might call "deep cleaning". So if I exercised for real, I might actually be "younger". Whee.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

And I too drive over 20k miles a year. I think it's something the state of Texas requires you to do. Along with having allergy problems. Oh yeah, it's great living here. ;) Actually, though, those weren't really big impactors. The big thing that messed me up was the exercise section. Still, I'm not that much "older".

20.8 with the body of a 27.7 year old (!!)

the smoking put me over the top, even though i don't smoke regularly anymore. yikes. also, i don't take vitamins and don't really exercise regularly. i still feel like i'm healthier than many people my age in that i don't get sick very often (i've had maybe one cold in the past year).

Calendar 31 (not actually true, but according to the web page..)

Real Age 41.3!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm 10.3 years older than I actually am!

That's horrid.

Mind you, I had trouble with my pulse too.. I sort of guessed it.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

and is this actually true? Does strength building exercise (specifically) improve your life prospects??

GRADUALLY WORK UP TO AT LEAST 90 MINUTES OF STRENGTH-BUILDING EXERCISES EACH WEEK.

Your RealAge is older because you spend less than 90 minutes a week doing strength-building exercises. Doing strength exercises, independent of your level of cardiovascular fitness, can make your RealAge younger.

ACTION PLAN:

If you are not performing strength-building exercises, consult a certified personal trainer or qualified fitness consultant to help you start a safe and effective program.
Work out three days per week on spaced days (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).
Before any exercise session stretch and warm up with activities such as running on a treadmill or riding a stationary bicycle.
Stretch the muscles that you will be working on, holding the stretch under mild tension for 10 seconds.
During each session, do at least 8 to 12 repetitions for each of the major muscle groups of the leg, trunk, arm, and shoulder.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

and what about this? I don't know anyone that takes a Vitamin E supplement, do you?

INCREASE YOUR INTAKE OF VITAMIN E TO 400 IU A DAY.

Your low intake of vitamin E makes your RealAge older. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that acts as an anti-aging agent. The best source of vitamin E is tablet or liquid supplementation.

ACTION PLAN:

You should take a 400-IU vitamin E supplement every day because it is difficult to get enough vitamin E from food alone. There is no difference between the vitamin E found in food and that found in most supplements. It is safe to consume up to 2,000 IU of vitamin E per day .
If you eat products containing Olestra, take a 400-IU supplement of vitamin E two times a day, each time between meals. The reason for this is that Olestra binds vitamin E reducing its effect.
Important Note

If you take warfarin (Coumadin) or dicumarol (Dicoumarol) or are considering taking any blood-thinning medication, please talk to your doctor before increasing your vitamin E intake through supplementation or diet.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

If you take a multivitamin you are getting that amount of Vitamin E every day! You don't have to take a separate Vitamin E supplement!

Anyway of course online tests are bullshit, though how anyone can say that the Which Creation Record Are You test is bullshit is beyond me, I mean that seems highly reputable!!! Not as reputable as Which Celebrity Should You Go Out With test though.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

I took it by saying my 20th birthday is today (really, my calendar age is 18.7).

I love how when it asks if you want to be sent tips to improve your overall health, and if you say no your RealAge shoots up 0.6 points. The liars. Then it jumps another 0.4 points if you say that you haven't been treated for clogged arteries -- for Christ's sake, I don't need to! When I got into the section about stress and social support, my RealAge jumped up ten years. At the exercise section it jumped up 1.8 years, which is bullshit because I walk around frequently (especially when I have to go out -- I'll do at least an hour of walking trying to get from there to here) and I don't really need to exercise (well, aside from building myself up a bit, maybe).

So, if I were 20 years old, my RealAge would be 26.7. Modify it to my actual calendar age (18.7) and I'd be 25.4. Cut off the full year for clogged arteries/not asking RealAge to send me things about improving my health, and cut about a little more than a year in regard to the exercise bit, and it'd be about 23.1 years.

I don't understand the focus on "strength training". Surely cardio training is more important with respect to living longer? If you already play sports, stay active, do cardio (running, biking, whatever), then it's hardly a crime against your body that you choose to not do bench-press excercises three times a week.

real age = 4.4 years older than calendar age. I drink too much, have too few friends, and my diet is atrocious. Ah well.

Things I'm doing right: Not eating a lot of red meat, lovin' that produce, having a dog, taking my meds, having good cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart rate levels, not drinking, not smoking, always driving with my seat belt on, and having many close family members. Well, "close" as in I see them QUITE often. But then there's that whole exercise bit.
