Major quake off California coast; tsunami warning no longer in effect

08:43 PM PDT on Tuesday, June 14, 2005

KING5.com

SEATTLE – A major earthquake has struck about 80 miles off the coast of Northern California.

A 7.0 earthquake took place near Eureka, Calif. at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday.

A tsunami warning was in effect for the coastal areas from the California-Mexico border to Sitka, Alaska, including the Oregon and Washington coasts.

The warning has now been downgraded to a tsunami bulletin, which means there could still be some effect from the earthquake.

People living in low-lying areas near the coasts are advised to listen for further notice. Clallam County Sheriff's Department was evacuating low-lying areas. Long Beach and Ocean Shores residents are still advised to head to higher ground.

Any ships at sea should remain at sea, any ships at shore should remain there.

SHouldn't that stupid alarm they blow off every Tuesday at 12PM have gone off? What a waste of a perfectly acceptable time to turn it on!

svend (svend), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

i had a dream about SF being destroyed in a tsunami a few weeks ago

oh shi, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

NO TSUNAMI DANGER EXISTS FOR ALASKA - BRITISH COLUMBIA -
WASHINGTON - OREGON OR CALIFORNIA. HOWEVER SOME AREAS MAY
EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS
CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL
CLEAR DETERMINATIONS MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

I remember seeing a photo composite of a tsunami approaching the Golden Gate Bridge at a tourist shop near Fisherman's Wharf. This was only a few weeks after the Indian Ocean Tsunami....I thought it was in terrible taste that the store had it out on display.

mikef (mfleming), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

Downgraded to 7.0

I hope only half of that fucking city gets wiped out by the TSUNAMI so that the other half can get a fucking nuclear bomb dropped on their sorry asses.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

we got like 5 calls from all sortsa people in LA. the waitress at our restaurant was freaking everyone out telling them she thought they should leave. but the news had already declared the warning over

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

The quake actually did generate a tsunami — of 1 centimeter, roughly the width of an adult finger.

RUN

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

twenty years pass...

We've already got the 'watch' notice on this one -- I gather Hawaii has already hit 'warning' level, which is much more serious.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 30 July 2025 03:58 (three days ago)

Arrived in Tokyo this morning its a barrage of alerts on my phone. Looking at the news everyone seems to have followed the alerts and headed for safe places.

NHK seems to suggest that it hit at low tide so a bit of luck there. Other parts of the pacific may not be so lucky. There’s an alert for Australia out for later on today.
