An arthropod consuming a mammal : 1 on 1... what's supposedly so disturbing about this?

As we just saw on the Tarantula vs. Mouse thread.. also having seen various Discovery channel shows where a giant centipede caught and consumed a frog, and also bird-eating spiders, etc.

These are very very isolated cases, though every narrator in the film suddenly takes a grim tone and says "it's difficult for people to stomach the idea of an arthropod single handedly consuming a mammal or any animal that is evolutarionarily closer to a human being than the predator; but we must remember that this doesn't necessarily speak less of the mammals but more than.. blah blah blah".

What's the biggie, yo? These are usually unusually large arthropods, and usually infant or small mammals.

(And the shark/human thing doesn't apply, as we don't have to fear for sharks every day of our lives.. unless you make a living dressing up as a seal and wading out in the open waters)

Well, I'm trying to bring up this discussion OUTSIDE the cage, figuratively and literally.

At the risk of bringing up this bugaboo again, the idea of of a man-made slaughterhouse for meat production is more chilling to me than TARANTULA vs. MOUSE... I don't think people are worse than me for thinking the opposite in this case, of course. But, I want to know what is it about BIG SPIDEY vs. LITTLE MOUSEY that makes people feel awful, aside from the issues that it was staged, etc. What if this was just something happening naturally outside a cage?

Maybe it was. Also, it WAS educational (I'd never seen it before) and the owner of the spider has an obligation to feed the animal he's keeping in captivity. Is this better or worse than feeding it crickets or (ish) frozen dead mice (as referenced in the other thread)?

I sympathise with people who are sqeamish about this but I distrust sentimentality wrt feeding and eating other creatures. Would it be better to feed the tarantula roaches 'cause they remind us less of our own mortality or 'cause we tend to despise them more than mice? This speaks merely to our own prejudices and I can't think of a good reason why they should win out over the tarantula's interests. Would it be less offensive if the mouse had been fed to a snake? The mouse, like the beasts whose flesh humans eat, was most likely raised as food. What of the mouse's supposed greater capacity to feel terror and pain compared to a cockroach? I don't know but in all the years I've tried to smush cockroaches, they didn't seem to eager to meet their maker either.

If given enough taurine, cats can be vegans, though I wonder how they would feel if someone gave them some meat. Still, I don't have a problem with people feeding their pets vegan or kosher or whatnot as long as they don't endanger the animals' health or severely diminish their quality of life.

what is bad about the video is that it is not someone feeding a tarantula, it is someone killing a mouse. there is a difference. I'm not sure why no-one else can see that though.

As I said on the other thread, the video/the killing didn't bother me, the set-up and the sadism bother me. Some little freak on the Internets thought it would be kewl to needlessly kill an animal and show it off. That's bizarre and cruel.

It has nothing to do with 'nature' or 'what animals do' (as noted above, captive tarantulas don't usually get fed adult mice) - it's the equivalent of videotaping someone crushing a mouse with his foot. Still OK with that?

Dismissing it as unimportant is stupid - no one's saying that mouse-murder is more important than Sudan, but it was there for the commenting, comments were made.

All those terrible Giant Cobra vs Humungous Wasp movies on SyFy miss an essential point I think - a cobra is scary because it's venomous and a gigantic thing is scary because it's gigantic.
