the mystery!

thoughts/theories?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

should i venture in? would i ever re-emerge?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

It looks like it originally may have been Dairy Land.

something about dan aykroyd coming out of burritoville (deangulberry), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

hahaha! maybe! or... "garyland"?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

looks ... fanciful???

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

You know what makes that extra amazing? The PERIOD.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

it is some slight against the english

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

i love the period!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Its like its the definitive. There is no other Fairy Land above "FAIRY LAND_._"

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

"FAIRY LAND. DEAL."

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Go in! The shop looks fun! I love how it does look like a change in the lettering though - the newer cement indeed suggests it mightve been "dairyland" or erm... "lairyland" or god knows.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Man, I really wanna go to Montreal *sulk*

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

what is that weird symbol with the circles?

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

I would really like it if you informed me where "FAIRY LAND." was for when I go up in August, because I need a picture of this sign for the scrapbook.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

it's on st-françois-xavier street, for the record, just below... notre-dame, i think!

it's actually pretty weird all things considered that i HAVEN'T been in that shop yet!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Your search - "fairy land" "british empire building" montreal - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:

- Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
- Try different keywords.
- Try more general keywords.
- Try fewer keywords.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

the mystery... deepens.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, what the heck IS that little white sign that looks like a broken bike or an upside down face? I saw those things all over Quebec and never figured it out.

Is that the same store that has all the handmade mediaeval dresses and armour and stuff? If yes, I've been in it. If no, then it appears to be in the same general area.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Is it one of those hobo signs? "no drugs here" or whatever? heh.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

what sign? are you talking about the crest above "FAIRY LAND."? because (i forgot to mention), that says "nemo me impune lacessit," which means "no one provokes/attacks/injures me with impunity." it's on british coins i noticed the last time i was in the UK.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

I think he means the red and white circular sign in the second picture.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

oh right. i believe that has something to do with... water mains? ok i have no idea what it is.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

is it like those signs that say "siamese connection," do you think? i think it DOES have to do with water mains.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

by the way dudes, i'm making this thread a special sneak preview of my new website, which is going to be a photo site focussing on old montreal ephemera, specifically signs, specifically painted ads, and other good stuff.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Fantastic, I love stuff like that :)

not far from my house!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

this beauty was uncovered a few weeks ago when the adjacent (& wicked.. :( ) building was destroyed to make way for condos. i don't know if it'll last long but the discovery made me really happy, and inspired me to get off my ass and start this project:

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Lea & Perrins! Yum!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

i took this picture because it reminds me of a surrealist sculpture. also i think it has bearing on the above discussion--those signs refer to, i'm sure, those siamese water spouts. i think!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Something like the "ghost ads" section on Lileks.com? That would rule. I'm always wanting to snap pictures of that kind of thing here in TO, but especially when it's just something that you can see temporarily when they're changing a billboard over or something.

x-post

yes!

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

there's an amazing one i have to go shoot next week... it's a big player piano ad on ste-catherine. and some asshole tagger (& lemme just say i'm usually pro-graffiti) stuck a big butt-ugly TOTALLY shitty tag on it. ARGH

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I can go check out fairy land. for ya'll if you'd like.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

i think the sign in the background is the same but faded (ie l berson & fils) as the sign in the foreground, which is for a monument maker a block north of me.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Montreal is a truly fabulous lookin' city :)

I should wander about and do similar shots of my area, theres some interesting old things similar.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

please do!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

Its funny, I sense a strange affinity btwn Mtl and Melbourne, even though the culture is kinda different, and well, we dont freeze our asses off :P

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

that's a comparison i've heard many many times you know!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 16 June 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

i don't know what this is; it's an art nouveaish mural on the corner of two residential streets (but there's a commercial unit on the first floor of the building; you can just make it out in the picture, it's a laundromat/café).

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 16 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

i just liked the typeface on this one. i wonder how long it's been there... (the sign, not the typeface). it's a block or so from the previous pic.

Slocki, when I run away from home, can I come and be your apprentice?

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 June 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

as long as it's not the kind of thing where you eventually kill me, well, yeah!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Dude, you should glue a chunk of mortar or something above the period and turn it into an exclamation point. Totally doable.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Throw a curly baguette up there and turn it into a question mark!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

or an "S"!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

OR an "O"!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

there is no such thing as a curly baguette.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

OR an "O"!

GAHAHAHAHAHAHA

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

there is no such thing as a curly baguette.

A prtezel, then!

the PSB signal (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Snakes, on the other hand, do, indeed, exist and, once petrified, would serve the same purpose.

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

Togs...the only time I use TOGS, or ever see anyone use that word, is in Boggle.

Abbott, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

i hadn't thought of that word in so many years

s1ocki, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

you should make these a tour
that ends in a dj nite dance party

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

TOGS! I thought only my mother said "togs", it belongs with words like "toot paper" and "cossies".

I never did do my Melb versions of these pics! Fer shame.

Trayce, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki, what can you tell me about this? I think it's on Rue St. Catherine, maybe?

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

between parc and st-laurent. you can go to tabaq across the street and eat pakistani food in a diner environment. or go to top tropical and eat burkina faso BBQ, also across the street.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

ooh i want to go to tabaq. and bbq.

jaymc's pic image is on de maissoneuve, north side, at bishop, i think (in concordia zone). i think it's still there! but it's one of those things my eyes just pass over now, i guess
