I'm going to be hitting the road soonish, but I don't really want to be on the Interstate. Why should I take the long way?

Dunno, yet. Starting in MN, EVENTUALLY ending up in Chi (if I get this job I'm applying for). If I hook into my friends road trip then there's the possibility of making it Way Out West.

Intersate 94 always worked for me, but I never got off on the backroads any.

When you take the back roads you see the little towns.

and eat in the better restaurants, and (in the case of Way Out West at least) encounter far fewer other drivers. Driving through a long stretch of route 66 I think we passed one other car, headed in the opposite direction.

I love two lane roads. If you've got the time, go the long way home.

hey, we just did this a couple of weeks back. we took a direct route, which you may not want, though. i'll can confirm with the map the road numbers if you'd like, but the road that follows the mississippi river on the MN side is bee-u-tee-ful. along the way there's supposed to be a great restaurant in pepin, mn, which we missed. from there we turned east through lacrosse and took 12 through wisconsin (which we picked up around madison, cuz traffic sucked). there were some larger 4 lane areas along the way, but it was much more fun than sitting in traffic (it was memorial day weekend). once you get towards chicago, all the roads turn strip mall bland, so not much you can do there...

I took a two lane hiway all the way across Kansas (No/So) on the way back from CO. Fanfuckingtastic. Having to actually navigate kept my wits about me and I didn't get all sleepy like I would have on the Interstate. It probably added 45 minutes-1hour to a 13 hour trip. No biggy. Plus, Kansas is HUGELY underrated scenery-wise, I think.
