Can threads be deleted? What is locking a thread?

The other sorts of threads that will get deleted are unanswered duplicate threads and spam by unregistered users (see below).
Locking a thread involves changing the settings so the thread survives but new answers cannot be posted to it. This has in the past been used as a compromise between deletion and non-deletion for controversial threads, but is more likely to be used when several threads on the same topic occur at the same time - eg when a big news event takes place and gets discussed on ILE, moderators may lock threads to minimise confusion.

although it's no big deal to ask meta-admin-type questions on the board, there is also this board for that purpose: http://ilx.p3r.net/newanswers.php?board=55
it's usually requests for moderation but of course it can also be requests for explanation of moderator action. I'm a ILE mod and so are Matt DC, Stevem, and Sean C. The side admins (the people who monkey with the actual code) also have mod privs as well. You can see recent moderator actions by clicking on the 'Admin Log' link at the very bottom of the screen.
