They weren't even long threads either? Confusing.

Because there's this one:

Fairly big LA area earthquake just now...

:-)

Oh! thanks, Ned. I misread that they were BOTH locked and it confused me when I tried to post.

FAQ

Can threads be deleted? What is locking a thread?

[...]

The other sorts of threads that will get deleted are unanswered duplicate threads and spam by unregistered users (see below).

Locking a thread involves changing the settings so the thread survives but new answers cannot be posted to it. This has in the past been used as a compromise between deletion and non-deletion for controversial threads, but is more likely to be used when several threads on the same topic occur at the same time - eg when a big news event takes place and gets discussed on ILE, moderators may lock threads to minimise confusion.

Let's just say that canker is a disease of plants, cancer of animals, and multiple threads on the same subject all hatched within a few minutes of one another is a disease of ILx.

First rule of earthquakes: don't talk about earthquakes.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 16 June 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

funny, very funny all of you. Nickn, that thought passed thru my head being an LA native....Shhhh! Don't talk about them - if you don't speak of them they won't happen. And of course I snapped back into reality and realized that can't be a special ILX rule. Next I thought that something weird had occurred since they were both locked - but Ned set me straight. Now this one should be locked since we have ANOTHER thread started by me about EQ as Aimless says: the canker of ILX are too many threads about the same topic.

Still learning.

Although anything that keeps people from moving here (ILX company excepted, of course) is a good thing.

no problem! yay for new people and welcome!

although it's no big deal to ask meta-admin-type questions on the board, there is also this board for that purpose: http://ilx.p3r.net/newanswers.php?board=55

it's usually requests for moderation but of course it can also be requests for explanation of moderator action. I'm a ILE mod and so are Matt DC, Stevem, and Sean C. The side admins (the people who monkey with the actual code) also have mod privs as well. You can see recent moderator actions by clicking on the 'Admin Log' link at the very bottom of the screen.
