Is there a conceivably legitimate reason why she has this? Just curious...

Joe (Joe), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

She wants people to forget she is from Bay City.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

She had a stroke, okay. Leave her alone about it!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

What? What accent? She just talks like her mates. She don't hear it. To her, you've got an accent.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Everyone says she has a cod-British accent but I've never heard it. To me it sounds like the elevated patrician accent of the golden age of Hollywood, like she's trying to sound all Audrey Hepburn. I guess those accents sounded a TINY bit British but it's not like she's all oi, guv.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

well nobody gives kylie minogue any shit for it so i dont see why madonna shd cop all the hate

Kylie Minogue could speak Klingon for an entire year and I'd still want her to be my absynthe fairy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Sheesh, have you heard Tina Turner since she's moved to her lavish estate in the South of France? She sounds like the Duchess of Windsor... "Rally, you must come see the gahden, it's exquisite in the Spring .."

The big wheel ain't turnin' no more, that's for sure.

andy --, Friday, 17 June 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

She's not still doing the accent, though, is she? That dates back to Ray of Light, doesn't it? Surely she's dropped that charade by now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

That's pronounced "sha-raaad"

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Isn't she a mookette in debutante's clothing by most people's accounts?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

what is this, 2000?

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Surely she's dropped that charade by now.

I don't know, when is the "Superbitch" video taken from? It says "(2005)" after it, so I assumed it was a recent clip...

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

I speculated to someone the other day about whether or not when she married Guy Ritchie if he had to pull her aside and say (speaking, of course, for those legitimately British), "Listen, the bit with the accent? Knock it off. We all had a meeting. Real bad."

Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (Plastic Gas Booby Trap), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

She talks like T.S. Elliot.

mcd (mcd), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

well nobody gives kylie minogue any shit for it

They bloody well do where she comes from. Aussies who go to London and get some really over OP accent are roundly mocked. Tall poppy syndrome, aussies dont like their successes getting all uppity.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

RP, not OP.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

aussies and english sound exactly the same to americans.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

You're not serious surely.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

no it's true, my own american boyfriend took nearly 12 months to tell the difference between me and english bitches

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

You're not serious surely.

My wife has a lovely British accent, and people often seem to think she's Australian.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

I've always been able to tell the difference. Australians have a bit of a drawl that's somewhat akin to that of a stereotypical Southerner here in the States. The English sound more posh.

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Totally. Australians have a completely different accent (as do New Zealanders, btw). For some reason, though, lots of my idiotic fellow Americans get it wrong (too much "SNL", not enough "Monty Python's Flying Circus")

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

i have a lovely australian accent and people often think im british. i guess its akin to australians not being able to tell the diff between american and canadian accents. i can though cause im clever.

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

monty python is useless unless youre catholic

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

We can tell between southern and northern american accents, NYC drawls, southern tennessee y'alls, etc etc. We can tell manc accents from liverpudlian from london. Why can we get it right? ;)

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

anyways, i thought madonna had a brooklyn accent back in the day - LIKE 20 SOMETHING YEARS AGO. maybe shes picking up her husbands accent. and for whatever deranged reason she seems to dig london. it happens. ive been in the states for only 6 months and i call home often to check if i still sound australian.

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

too much US tv not enough canadian?

i want a fargo accent.

x-it

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

TO be fair, a lot of peoples accents change when they live somewhere else a long time to to hang shit on madonna and kylie for putting on airs is perhaps unfair.

We get canadian TV a hell of a lot here too katharine! (am I misremembering or did you used tolive in aus?). ABC shows canadian kids shows and cartoons all the time.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 18 June 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i lived in sydney until six months ago. the only canadian tv i remember seeing was kids in the hall on the comedy channel (foxtel) and degrassi jr high back when i was still in high school (im 33 now). im racking my brain for more canadians, but other than peeps in some of the snl casts (foxtel too) and john candy movies i cant think of any.

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

Ive noticed it in recent years on the kids afternoon stuff, like Angela Anaconda and um... various other rather weird canadian or french-canadian cartoons. I cant think of any now off the top of my head tho.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 18 June 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

hey, remember the wombles?

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

fargo accent pwns! what IS that exactly?

g-kit (g-kit), Saturday, 18 June 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Minnesota small-town/suburban white folks of Scandinavian descent, you betcha.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 18 June 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

I remember the wombles. I hope the wombles still remember they are wombles.

estela (estela), Saturday, 18 June 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

madonna had a brooklyn accent back in the day - LIKE 20 SOMETHING YEARS AGO.

in 1984 Madonna still drawled her A's in that classic southern Michigan/suburban Detroit accent. it's been a long journey.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 18 June 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

michigan? her videos have fooled me. i always thought she was an italian catholic new york girl.

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Danny Aiello is not actually her father.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

gethefuckOUT

(and i mean that)

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Madonna totally should have had a cameo in "Do the Right Thing," where she twirls in to Sal's, gives him a kiss on the cheek, shows off her baby and twirls out again.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 June 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Madonna sounds like a dumbass, an accent that cannot be shaken, stirred or forgotten.

oik, Saturday, 18 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

at least its not that fucking model accent. you know the one they use on revlon/maybelline etc etc ads. thats ridiculous.

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 18 June 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

"Madonna totally should have had a cameo in "Do the Right Thing," where she twirls in to Sal's, gives him a kiss on the cheek, shows off her baby and twirls out again."

if this scene was put into the movie EXACTLY as you described with no lines, that would be by far one of the funniest moments in film history.
